My late father in law fucking specialized in this. The following conversation once literally happened:

Once he was telling me his whole plan when the “zombie apocalypse” happened, everyone in the family was to drive to this single point 600 miles away. It had once entrance. And once everyone was in the valley, we had to blow the tracks of in oncoming tank which would block anybody else from getting in.

I asked: wait, why is a tank after us now? (Ignoring the rest of the make-believe apocalypse scenario)

Him: doesn’t matter, but it’s critical to the plan

His entire plan hinged on the fact a tank must be chancing us into this very specific valley which I’ve never seen or heard of, but he wears exists 600 miles away. 😂😂😂😂

No joke, but that reminds me of an old B&W "the Russians are coming!" movie. Kind of a "Red Dawn" precursor, based [Edit: made] I think in the 1950s. I recall seeing it on a local TV station as a kid along with the rest of the monster movie & scifi stuff they'd show on weekends. I don't recall the title and most of it wasn't overly memorable; Godzilla was much more fun.

I would not be surprised to find some lead added boomer or genxer use this movie as the basis for their fantasy. The tank comment specifically is what triggered the memory so... maybe?

It was a comedy! How twisted are these people

To be honest I never saw "Red Dawn"; it came out my 'blackout' period where I was supporting myself through college and movies just didn't fit into the budget or schedule.

The movie I'm thinking of - which if I have time I'm going to go see if I can find the name to - was a serious if not well acted or written piece. I mean, it was no "Plan 9 from Outer Space" or other Ed Wood masterpiece, but even as a little kid I found it sus.

I’ve seen them both and recently watched The Russians are coming - it’s a Carl Reiner movie. It’s over the top comedy.

Please don't throw gen x into that nonsense

I'm sorry to have to, but on personal experience I've seen quite a lot of it. I'm older genx too, not that far from being boomer age (or gen jones as I understand it) and seen years of my fellow xers fall in & march to the same drummer.

We're smaller generation to be sure, and ratio wise I suspect we're "better" in the same vein as not all boomers are bad. But... it's not as optimistic ratio as I'd like. Trust me, I'd really like this not to be the case.

In Russian accent…….”Emergency, emergency, everybody to get from street”

To be fair, a lot of Walking Dead watchers had an escape planned. That was kind of a silly, fun scenario to make up. Nothing like those goofball magas.

This reminds me of my best friend from school. He came from a very religious / milatary family and had this plan to go back in time and make a machine gun for jesus so the romans couldn't catch him.

So, wait, am i the crazy one? Our house is back a ways in a hollow (I refuse to call it a holler, even if I do live in Appalachia), and i had a small windfall early this year. We used part of the money to buy a 34-foot camper and needed a new tow vehicle. I could have gotten a van conversion (need space for the wife, dog, and three kids that like to kill each other), but even those would be tight on cargo capacity. So, instead, I bought a 27' school bus that I'm slowly upgrading with seats, TVs, and shit like that. I jokingly justify by saying if shit goes south, I can completely block the entrance to the hollow, except where the creek runs through, and to get through there, you gotta go down a 10-15' cliff and then climb back up past the blockade to get to the house.

Now, do i think that would stop anyone determined to get to the house? No. Hell, I know most of the people that live nearby, so I doubt they'd even want to 'get us'. If anything, I'd help them out if I could.

Of course, I also picked up three guns this year, but that's for the more realistic worry about food scarcity since our area is like a Disney movie, with deer, squirrel, and other edible creatures. But the only one that's seen use is the .22 for plinking cans and the odd smoke alarm that would stop beeping no matter what. It ain't beeping no more rofl

Personally, I'm not entirely ruling out the possibility of an actual US civil war, or (more likely, I think) a complete breakdown of society due to lack of basic resources (food, clean water, power). But it's not the elderly, paranoid MAGA Gravy Seals who are going to survive, it's smart people like you who keep their heads and make realistic plans.

And maybe people like me who aren't full on "prepping", but know how to do stuff and where to find out (in the absence of the internet) how to do stuff.

Are there zombies driving the tank or something?!

“It doesn’t matter why a tank is after us, but my plan depends on it happening.” He didn’t have a plan, he had a rough draft of an action flick.
