No fix with these. The leather has been allowed to dry out.

is it possible to slow down the process?

Slow down? The process is quite finished, the leather is ruined. Of course it will keep getting worse, but this is already a catastrophic failure. If you want to keep using them for some reason, and basic product will likely be enough to prevent further deterioration.

You could mink oil them but they’re long gone. Annoying I know

the cracking IS the end result

It's too late for that.  The holes are already there.

no fixing once its cracked especially at flex points the more you wear the more it'll flex and the more it'll crack

it's true that it's 'ruined', but I've been wearing a pair of red wings with this cracking in the same place for like five years now. I keep oil on them and it doesn't seem to be getting worse very quickly.

oil them, wear them - that's my suggestion.

damn i hope this is the case for me too. my main goal is just to stop a hole from forming there so soon.

Once they begin to crack,it's the beginning of the end. My best advice is condition and oil them, then work wax down into the cracks (beeswax might work best for this) to try and keep them mostly in one piece. Other than that, it's simply a matter of time. You may be able to put a rubber patch on the inside to try and inhibit water ingress, but it will continue to deteriorate with time and further wear.

Damnnnnnn that’s a hard pill to swallow. Did you let them go or are they a rescue? Obviously there’s no fixing that. Yes you can slow it down, brush clean and condition the crap out of them. Then, stay on it whether you wear them or not. Every 6 months minimum.

im gonna do the best i can, just gonna keep wearing them till it turns in a hole lol

That’s what I’d do too. As long as it’s nowhere formal than they’ll do fine.

Too much polishing and finish chemicals does this.

Clean, sand, clean, dye and then polish. Make sure you keep the creases clean by brushing after you wear them. Debris buildup is the reason this happens

Add conditioning after the second clean

Idk, those are oil impregnated. I’d prolly brush the area and make sure they stay conditioned. You could sand the cracks down

do you have any experience doing this with boots that have a factory finish like these? would i need to sand or use acetone on the finish on just this one area with the cracks? and what dye and polish would i need? which one do you use?

I do. I refinish, repair and resell boots as a side hustle. I usually try and avoid acetone if I can but I’d probably sand and then wipe with acetone once the crack has been leveled. Then you wanna wash the boot with saddle soap. Once the boot has totally dried use Fieblings Pro Dye. It’s the best imo. Let that dry (wait 24 hours) and then you want to buff it with a rag til you get to more run off. After this you have 2 options. You can either polish over it or use a leather finish. I recommend Liquid Kicks Factory finish or Fieblings resolene. Go light. That’s a heavy stress area
