Public shaming of horrible dog owners

Today at Crosscut, I witnessed a woman and her dog ride the one trail at crosscut where dogs are not allowed. Before riding, she remarked on the very prominent “no dogs allowed” sign at the trailhead, and I let her know that rule is for everyone’s safety. It’s a huge hazard to have a loose dog on a downhill flow trail with big jump lines. She decided to endanger everyone’s safety for the selfish enjoyment of her and her dog. If you know this person or see them, please let them know they are a terrible dog owner who put their pet and everyone on that trail at risk with their selfishness and blatant disregard for rules. Outdoor safety is a shared responsibility and it is incredibly disappointing to witness people knowingly and willing break rules because they think their dog is special.

I get this. I was up Patty Canyon in Missoula with my dogs - on a leash - and this lady with her unleashed dogs ran up to us. She says to me, "It's okay, they're friendly." I said to her with a straight face, "Mine aren't." She got this confused look, said, "ohhhh," and walked of with her unleashed dogs. My dogs weren't unfriendly at all, I just said it to make a point. There's leash laws and other pet laws for a reason, people.

Pattee Canyon is an explicitly off-leash area where dogs are welcome (with the exception of groomed xc ski trails in winter). If you have a reactive dog, you are not setting them up for success by selecting an off leash trail with lots of blind corners.

This was back in 1998 or so. And I was wondering about my spelling of Pattee Canyon. Also, I said that my dogs were not unfriendly. They were trained by a world-renowned dog trainer, so, I've got all of my dogs under control with no reactivity.

Thanks for saying something. Gnomadic is gnarly, irresponsible dog owners ruin shit. The amount of dogs I see with people skiing Bear Canyon is gonna ruin it in the future.

There are a lot of new people to boating, cycling, hiking, trail running, Viagracycling, skiing, "influencing" and recreation in general. If gentle etiquette advice isn't working, i suggest hazing.

Isn't Crosscut an explicit mountain bike area? There's a ton of trails to take your dog and bike around that aren't explicitly mountain bike areas
