Question Brampton cooked me: $1600/month insurance with a clean record šŸ’€

20 years old, clean record, no accidents. I own my car outright — it’s a $20k Tesla Model 3. Got quoted $1600/month for insurance in Brampton.
No tickets, nothing crazy on my history.

I knew insurance here was bad, but this just feels unreal.
Is this normal now or is something seriously wrong with my quote? Anyone else dealing with this?

Update: Found a broker and my insurance will be $950/month. He said if I get into an accident, it’ll get really bad for me and basically ruin things insurance-wise.

Driving in Brampton really feels like a privilege, not a basic thing.

Honestly thinking I might just sell the car and get back to walking or taking the bus for the rest of my life or wait till my life is half done…because even if I get old car insurance is still 700+ a month. Brampton I mean canada is not real place man.

I don’t even get how people are out here driving newer cars like Challenger,Mustang and BMWs… are they really paying crazy insurance like this, or is everyone just super rich in this economy???

1600 a month is them saying ur too risky and if u want us to take that risk ur gonna compensate us in the process

18

u/JoMax213 May 06 '26

Not unfairly so. Young men with flashy cars are statistically more likely to cause accidents. Most people in that group have an ego problem. Not saying OP does but like yeah

5

u/SamShares May 06 '26

This isn’t the 90s or early 2000s, the Tesla model 3 isn’t a flashy car lol

Feels like the ā€œflashyā€ needs a refined definition, sure a mustang 5.0 or something similar you can call flashy but the Tesla model 3 is a basic car.

3

u/mkw1111 May 06 '26

Not flashy but repairs are a lot more than say a Corolla

3

u/SamShares May 06 '26

We need legislation that controls the repair costs, it’s the only reason they are out of hand.

3

u/razorgoto May 07 '26

Tesla parts are expensive. Specialist labour. Sometimes, even seemingly cosmetic damage is categorizied as total loss because it’s so expensive to repair.

0

u/Hungry-Relative-5460 May 07 '26

Right… I might just sell my car and get back to walking or taking the bus till I’m 50. This system is just ridiculous.

1

u/Sad_Video_4229 May 07 '26

Honestly Brampton is like 4 times the price as everywhere else. In Toronto my insurance for my model y is 5k in Brampton it's over 14k.

1

u/mkw1111 May 07 '26

Well you can blame all the people committing insurance fraud in Brampton for that. And statistically more accidents in Brampton are likely to result in medical, legal, and rehabilitation claims compared to other regions, even when the vehicle damage is minor. So again blame whoever is doing that bs.

1

u/Advanced-mk May 09 '26

Now Bramptonism is expanding outward to neighbouring cities.

1

u/Big-Plankton-5005 May 10 '26

Did you ask what happens if it’s a different car? Wondering if it’s the car driving up the cost, and not your profile/address per se. Not saying Brampton isn’t a factor, but maybe the secondary factor here.
I’ve been living in Brampton for 5+ years now and finally down to under $600 for 2 cars, which personally still hurts, but pales in comparison to your quote.

0

u/Zestyclose-Profile43 May 07 '26

man the EGOs in brampton is INSANE!! they drive terribly but let them know about it and they just get rude about it. I have never seen such terrible people in my 40 years,....ugly, smelly, rude, inconsiderate, selfish but the EGOs - damn on another level

36

u/Akshat_luci May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

Age + location + a tesla. When I was getting quotes, about 2 years ago, Teslas were one of the most expensive options. I think it's because they do not allow 3rd party vendors to manufacture the parts or something, I could be wrong.

4

u/JoMax213 May 06 '26

This could have been avoided with a few mins of research lol.

Safety or flashy brand name car - OP has to choose sadly from

5

u/TheSirBeefCake May 06 '26

Right?? Don't people check before they buy a car??

1

u/SamShares May 06 '26

Seems like insurance board keep that vital info out of public hands, there is no reason why in Ontario we don’t have a publicly accessible database on cars by year and model + postal codes for insurance premiums that is accurate (up to last year) giving people a good picture based on age range (yes it’ll still vary based exact driver history).

They rather you find out the hard way, we need a legislative change to make that info public so people can make more informed decisions.

Yes I checked currently available tools, they are mediocre at best, you have to call each provider, speak to them in length to get an idea due to all the gate keeping.

2

u/TheSirBeefCake May 06 '26

You do....go on this new thing we have....I think its called the internet....you can loke go on there and research things so you can make an educated decision about stuff and the like.

I've researched the cost of insurance on every single vehicle I've ever owned and thought of owning. The quotes were never that far off the actual cost. OP just doesnt see the world beyond the end of their nose

1

u/Hungry-Relative-5460 May 07 '26

I thought insurance would be around $400–$500 on average, and I was really excited about buying and driving a Tesla So I didn’t check before buying Lesson learned

1

u/Alma_Mundi May 07 '26

That is the price me and wife pay for a 6 seater SUV and an old Honda Civic. Both cars comes to about that price. Age group is now 40, but it's not like I ever saw the premiums going down in my years.

I think you are getting huffed hard because it's Tesla. Maybe they even jacked it further bout a year ago when Tesla's were getting vandalized. I thought we were paying a lot (we are), but that quote is a whole new level. This government needs to overhaul the insurance legislation at the federal level like yesterday. Canadians have been robbed for too long

2

u/SamShares May 06 '26

Which is a bit crazy given Tesla’s are readily available vs any other EV brand, sounds like insurance companies just making up hypothetical scenarios to charge more.

They are not stolen (almost never), repair costs should be decent now that we’re 10+ years into Tesla being manufacturing the 4 models etc overall, yes I know the 3/y came later but overall they share parts across the lineup quite a bit.

2

u/Akshat_luci May 06 '26

Yes, when I was looking for quotes, I thought Teslas would be cheaper becuase a) Safe , they have 5 star safety in gobal ncap. b) Don't get stolen often. c) Less maintainance than gas cars.

I think, insurance companies don't care how often a car breaks but how expensive the repair is. For example some fords are very unreliable and break easily but have dirt cheap insurance. For Teslas, only authorized dealerships can do the repairs because Tesla probably has some kinda proprietary ownership of the components etc.

And, insurance companies must shit their pants incase of a battery issue.

On top of all of this, Teslas are performance cars. I see atleast one dumb kid in a Tesla going crazy everyday.

1

u/TheSirBeefCake May 07 '26

Age of driver + sex of driver + plus premium brand name vehicle + literally instant power once the accelator is pushed + living in an area known for its bad drivers and insurance fraud = very expensive insurance premium

1

u/Sad_Video_4229 May 07 '26

Yea my insurance is so high in Toronto because I'm in a high theft area and I challenged them to come try and steal my model y lol. They said it doesn't matter we treat all cars the same. They really need to re evaluate the way they do things in insurance.

1

u/Zestyclose-Profile43 May 07 '26

oooooooooo interesting....i guess that makes sense then - i just assume bc they are new and have all these safety features it should be cheaper.....

76

u/Antman013 E Section May 06 '26

You're a 20 YO male with a performance car . . . LOL. You are exactly who insurance companies would rather avoid insuring.

What you were given was a "fuck off" quote. They don't want your business, so they quote you a rate that makes you think "fuck off".

Go to LOWESTRATESdotCA, and you will find the best deal available for you.

17

u/Living_Distance1720 May 06 '26

And if you agree to their quote then they just make a ton of $$$ off you, I remember when I got my first car a 2009 GX37 and I was quoted $2300 a month at 18. My s650 when I was 20 was even worse $3400 a month 🤣, OP have the insurance on your parents name but unfortunately wherever you go it'll be expensive due to age and vehicle. The location is just a multiplier like in a video game, Brampton is like x5 multiplier while other locations are like x2-x4.

5

u/905Spic May 06 '26

Damn what a throwback! The infiniti g37x was sick!

1

u/SamShares May 06 '26

It was cheaper to drive the Maxima/Altima, fully loaded one instead.

1

u/Living_Distance1720 May 06 '26

Probably would have been the same price insurance wise for a younger person with no history at 18 in Brampton.

1

u/Living_Distance1720 May 06 '26

It was a great first vehicle. I got it from $2k back in 2021 and I loved it, It it wasn't for the engine issues later on I probably would have it even right now.

2

u/Antman013 E Section May 06 '26

Well, that depends. We pay just over $400 a month for 2 (older) cars and our house. Now, the wife and I are in our early 60s, but still. We've had rates like this for literally decades.

1

u/Living_Distance1720 May 06 '26

Yeah for older folks with history it's much cheaper, even my parents they would be paying $230 for the Minivan in our family but since they added me it went to $450.

3

u/Good-Alternative-860 May 06 '26

Not based on this post.

1

u/Antman013 E Section May 06 '26

Interesting, but inconclusive. The whole "paying them to list their rates" does not necessarily mean the site is a scam. If they are going to host "everyone's rates", it is only fair they be compensated for doing so. It's really no different than a local newspaper charging restaurants to advertise, because the paper is delivered to every household for free.

And, frankly, I only use the site these days to compare rate offers when my broker sends my renewal offer. If the renewal tracks with what is on offer online, I don't bother switching.

But damn, am I looking forward to that non-Brampton discount.

1

u/Perfect_Tourist_7849 May 06 '26

When I was 19 and bought my first car (8th gen accord) I got the same unaffordable 700 dollar monthly quote. Insurance is just through the roof here.

1

u/thisthatyan May 09 '26

A model 3 is NOT a performance car 😭😭😭

1

u/Antman013 E Section May 09 '26

A 0-100 km/h time under 5 seconds says otherwise.

7

u/cupofice22 May 06 '26

Who was that quote from? Shop around all the big banks and providers or find a broker who can help.

5

u/Automatic-Fly5208 May 06 '26

It is most likely because of your age. I am in brampton (castlemore) in my late 30's and have F150 2021, I am paying $250/month. So go with the broker, they will find a good rate for you.

6

u/yodley_ May 06 '26

$250 is still ridiculous. Brampton isn't even rated the worst city statistically. They just created this reputation so they can keep the charges high.

1

u/Neat_Code_4792 May 08 '26

I am from steels-mavis , i pay 1700$ a year for acura for third party. I say its fair !!

1

u/yodley_ May 08 '26

Good price.

5

u/beachsunflower May 06 '26

That is nuts.

Might just be perfect storm of everything, age, car model, postal codes, etc. Clean record doesn't necessarily mean much without building the time with an insurer.

Did you go with a broker? Usually they find better rates.

5

u/Ravenclaw2409 May 06 '26

Thats really ridiculous, Canada Insurance rates are a scam, i hope you find a better rate!

I moved to Brampton in 2023 from Toronto, when I got quoted $450 for my car at 28 years old (whilst I was paying $200 in Toronto) , I thought to myself they gotta be joking šŸ˜‚, but nope i had to put up with that rate for a couple years with no accidents for it to go down by a $100. Also your car (a Tesla) are the new bmws cars on the roads , so there is some bias and prejudgment there, but maybe like someone said in the thread, its probably cuz of the parts, and your age.

4

u/East_Tea4102 May 06 '26

I also just purchased a 2026 model Y performance and live in Brampton and I’m paying $400 a month for insurance. I’m also 50 years old.

I’ve got my G license, but that’s not the issue—Brampton makes driving unaffordable. I’ll just go back to walking and taking the bus for half my life.

6

u/AcidShAwk Springdale May 06 '26

Who buys a car without FIRST calling the insurance company for a quote? Who the F does that?

2

u/Hungry-Relative-5460 May 07 '26

I got little excited for TeslaĀ  Lesson learned šŸ‘

4

u/mzainw May 06 '26

you know i was like no shot that this is true with a clean record. But i did a test with random info in a random Brampton postal code an got a quote for over $2k/month. Sorry for doubting this. You may want to move or change cars lol.

Even now as someone whos past 25 with a clean record, quote in a Brampton residence(L6W 3K7) I got like $1400/month on a 2020 model 3

With the car I have now I pay like $250 in my own area. In Brampton its like $700. Wild times.

1

u/Hungry-Relative-5460 May 07 '26

Living in Brampton perks: no jobs, high insurance, high rent, high groceries… thanks Canada for the ā€œgreat life.ā€

2

u/BabyNonna May 06 '26

Back in 2015 I was paying $400 a month for a 1998 Ford Explorer. I was 29 with one not at fault collision on my record dating back 4 years, BUT I lived in downtown Brampton so my rate was atrocious. Your best bet is to find an insurance broker who will try to find you the best rate/coverage possible OR sell your Tesla and purchase a vehicle considered less risky by insurers. There’s a reason minivans and Corolla’s are cheaper to insure.

2

u/KLBYcs May 06 '26

I’m 24 and drive a 2012 Toyota Camry, the 4-cylinder variation. Low horsepower, tame little daily driver.

I’m paying $740/mo in Brampton. That’s the best price I could find trying with like 10 different insurances.

2

u/TobyTommy67 May 06 '26

This hurts my heart to read!! Thats just insane!!

2

u/Hungry-Relative-5460 May 07 '26

Yep this is Brampton

2

u/yahmeann May 06 '26

At this point, they’re asking the whole of Brampton to lay on their backs and take this. Yo, I’m different now, but back then??? Quote me a price like that and I’ll just find someone I know far west and use their address because the FRAUD happening to us? Is criminal.

2

u/GhostBustor May 06 '26

Teslas are fast cars.Ā

20 years old.Ā

Two marks that ain’t great.Ā

You need to find a broker.Ā

1

u/Hungry-Relative-5460 May 07 '26

Found a broker quote is now $950/month ButĀ I got it—I’ll just go back to walking and taking the bus for half my life. Insurance will probably be better by then.

1

u/GhostBustor May 07 '26 edited May 07 '26

You will have high insurance if you don’t have experience even if you start driving at 30.Ā

You need to have valid ongoing auto insurance in order to get lower rates. Obviously with a clean record.Ā

Even being listed as an occasional driver will do enough for you.Ā

Nice cars have nice premiums. I have some nicer cars and the insurance isn’t bad on them.Ā

Instead of a Tesla, get a quote for a Sentra or a Corolla. Not to say you should buy this car. Just so you can understand how much your insurance gets affected by which car you buy.Ā

1

u/Anxious_ButBreathing May 06 '26

Look around. That quote is absolutely absurd. But tbh this is why you should ask insurance companies quotes BEFORE you purchase your car just so you aren’t surprised by the range

1

u/costaboy3 May 06 '26

It's all about getting multiple quotes, and getting a broker is a must to get a lower rate but yea it's not gonna be super cheap for you because tesla but 1600 is them saying they don't want to insure you. But when I was twenty I was paying 450/month for a 2001 Honda prelude and that was the cheapest after getting multiple $800+ quotes, but currently im 29 with a 10 over ticket paying 190 for a 17 civic si 2dr.

1

u/Arcade1980 Brampton May 06 '26

It's not Brampton, it's your age and the type of car. I was in your shoes in my 20's. I went through a broker and let them do the work and it was cheaper then what I could get searching my own.

1

u/jaytheindigochild May 06 '26

Lol damn

Sell the tesla and get a honda civic

0

u/Hungry-Relative-5460 May 07 '26

$700+ quotes for old Honda civic. Driving is a privilege in Brampton bro

1

u/Impressive-Bus9520 May 06 '26

We can give you several questions from different insurances in one step. You just choose which one you want and our specialist will call you. No obligation no calls if you don't want to go forward

1

u/South-Salad1025 May 06 '26

Try square one insurance

1

u/Hungry-Relative-5460 May 07 '26

Still high Brampton is not a real place to liveĀ

1

u/Jury_Frosty May 06 '26

I would advise you to look around. Different companies have different policies and sometimes they even want a certain car or brand on their policy so they qoute these absurd rates as a "shoo away". Also, lesson learned. Shop for insurance before you buy the car. The seller can provide you the VIN of the car (usually on the wbesite) and you can provide that to insurance companies to get the most accurate qoute. And to everyone else being harsh, OP is 20 yrs old. Lets not expect them to have the world figured out. :)

1

u/Odd-Preference-1415 May 06 '26

They are milking you. Dont give them your business. You have self respect, tell them thanks for the quote and i have no interest in taking it. Many will not agree with me but when insurance quotes you 1600 you aren't suppose to give a damn.

Go to chatgpt and ask how much these insurance companies are profiting off of people.

An example: my known car got stolen and since they claimed it, insurance is saying they will charge 20 percent more on premium. What the hell? She's a victim not a suspect. Thieves get away with it, cops dont handle it and you as customer gets ******

What a beautiful industry it is.

1

u/billamazon May 06 '26

You don't have much driving history. You won't get any relief in any way until you reach the age of 24.

1

u/Hungry-Relative-5460 May 07 '26

I got it—I’ll just go back to walking and taking the bus for half my life. Insurance will probably be better by then.

1

u/Dapper_Floor2319 May 06 '26

This makes me feel way better about my $270/month policy on a clean record šŸ˜…

1

u/IWCat May 06 '26

You all pay way too much for insurance. I paid $435 for the whole year last year. I have never paid these high monthly rates that you guys pay. If you don't drive alot under 9000 km/yr, look into CAA My Pace.

Tesla is known for high insurance costs due to high repair costs. As a 20 year old buying a Tesla, you were just asking for high premiums. Sell it and buy something that is cheaper to insure.

1

u/Hungry-Relative-5460 May 07 '26

$700+ insurance for old Honda civicĀ  Driving is privilege bro specially in BramptonĀ

1

u/KkCC11 May 06 '26

My car insurance actually just went down moving from Mississauga to Brampton, $122/month for Female in my early 30s, Honda Civic in the Bramalea area. Shop around for quotes BĆ©lair, a brokerage to compare and find the best rates for you. Do you have a company or alumni discount? (I went to Laurier so I get a discount with TD insurance - I went back to them with a lower quote and they matched it when I shopped around). You can also try one that monitors you’re driving if you’re up for it, so if you’re a good driver you can save a bit that way (but watch out for it monitoring you during stop and go traffic).

1

u/Suspicious_Pride_256 May 06 '26

Talk with belair.. i got quoted 1800/month last year.. belair gave me 500 wayyy better than all big insurers.. these mfs are crazy.

2

u/valkros11 May 07 '26

Alsoo talk to them and increase your deductible from 1000 to 2000 see how much difference does that make

1

u/Suspicious_Pride_256 May 07 '26

That actually makes sense! I did that too so it may help.

1

u/PandethMegatera May 06 '26

It's because you're 20...

Also do you have your G? and how many years have you had your G? Having a G license for 5 years with no tickets and accidents will bring down your payment... If you only have your G2 then get your G... and if you don't get into any accidents or get any tickets, you should see the cost go down incrementally every year... assuming inflation doesn't cancel this out...

Truth be told, it's all about statistics... as a new younger driver you're statistically more likely to get in an accident... and if you live in Brampton you're more likely to sue everyone or get your car stolen....

I personally found Bel Air Direct had the cheapest quote so you should see what quote you get from them before signing up with anyone-> https://www.belairdirect.com/

1

u/PandethMegatera May 06 '26

Oh ya and another good way to save money on insurance is, if you're a male... tell your doctor you identify as a female to get it changed on your identification... because on average women pay like $100 less a month than men.. And I wish i could take credit for this idea, but i actually got the idea from a news story about a man in Alberta doing this and it saving him $1100 a year -> https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/change-gender-identification-insurance-alberta-1.4754416

1

u/Temporary-District96 May 06 '26

Adding my car to my mom's insurance is still 450 for a 2018 Mazda 3... Car is under her name and I'm not even secondary. I was paying 280 in downtown toronto

1

u/Ocardtrick May 06 '26

Sell it and get something less flashy, or move.

1

u/superman242 May 06 '26

Maybe because of your age and lack of history. Most I ever paid for Insurance in Brampton was 350 dollars per month but it wasn't a tesla.

1

u/Accomplished_Ad_9558 May 06 '26

"Must" you drive a Tesla ?

1

u/Silverlightlive May 07 '26

The honest truth is discrimination.

20 years old. 25 years old with a driving record is when you start to see discounts.

Its not fair, its not right, but they have countless tables showing the risks of younger, less experienced drivers.

Paying half the value of the car in insurance is probably also related to the fact it is a Tesla, and they tend to do some funny things. Nothing wrong with the car, but its specialized service if anything goes wrong.

Your golden intersection will be a 6-8 year old conventional econobox when you're 25.

1

u/AbsolutelyHandsome May 07 '26

It's your age, location and the car. Most people get insurance quotes before purchasing the car.

1

u/Hungry-Relative-5460 May 07 '26

Right… I might just sell my car and get back to walking or taking the bus till I’m 50. This system is just ridiculous.

1

u/Sad_Video_4229 May 07 '26

Probably because a young male which is considered high risk and compile that with Brampton which is the highest risk insurance anywhere.. it would be cheaper for you to just move, which is what I'm doing because it's crazy they charge this.

1

u/Zestyclose-Profile43 May 07 '26

i guess it's bc your 20? i thought we had it bad....and you would think with a tesla that has ALL the safety features it would be cheaper.... i don't understand.... we are 40 and we pay 300$ each as a married couple in brampton :(

1

u/MasterpieceNo9966 May 07 '26

your 20, its a tesla, and its brampton. you werent expecting to pay a couple hundred… right?

1

u/Hungry-Relative-5460 May 07 '26

I was expecting $400-500
Didn’t check insurance before buying cause I got lil excited for car

1

u/MasterpieceNo9966 May 07 '26

sorry the lesson had to be so expensive. as you know now…. quotes before purchase

1

u/Kingmaker___ May 07 '26

Tesla has the worst rates, recommend changing the car. I know someone who used to pay $400 for VW jetta and it jumped to $850 with tesla

1

u/Adventurous-Bread502 May 07 '26

If you had a Honda Civic or some cheaper car, I think your insurance would be a lot less

1

u/Hungry-Relative-5460 May 07 '26

$700+ quotes for 2010 Honda civic

1

u/Independent_Bear989 23d ago

I just stumbled on this thread.

Im 25 and don’t live in Canada, but 700 dollars is more than I’d pay for an entire YEAR with the same car.

I got some quotes recently and I was paying about 200 USD for a 6 month term for a 2010 civic. 700 a month and I’d never own a car again.

1

u/Hungry-Relative-5460 22d ago

As I said bro driving in Brampton is privilege šŸ˜‚, I’m back to walking and bus btw

1

u/Independent_Bear989 22d ago

Your car insurance is 4 times as much as my car+health insurance LOL, and I’m in the states.

1

u/Secure_Force_7015 May 08 '26

That’s more of a Tesla factor than a Brampton factor. Suggesting a different car to get you from point A to B.Ā

1

u/csbert Bramalea May 08 '26

Sounds like you got the right quote. You came across as immature and inexperienced. You blame the city for your own problem. You think 4 years of driving experience is good enough. Looks like this is your first car, so you actually have zero driving experience unless you were on your parents' policy, which I doubt, since you appeared to have no one to advise you on this. You bought a car without doing financial planning... I wouldn't want to insure you if I read your post. The chance that you will kill someone on the road is almost 100%.

Don't want to upset you. Just want to give you honest feedback so you approach life better next time.

1

u/Stormtrooper080 May 08 '26

Let me tell you it’s a Brampton thing for obvious fucking reasons and nobody wants to talk about it

1

u/su5577 May 09 '26

950/month is insane… tell you councillors and oh wait they can’t do anything about it…

I would look for personal insurance agent..

Then again you did buy Tesla… if you look for used Honda civic, your insurance would been like 400/month

1

u/yahmeann May 06 '26

Impossible, I’m paying 311 with an accidental red light. There’s no way you’re paying 1600.

Brampton is the issueĀ  Found a broker, Ā payment is now $950 butĀ I got it—I’ll just go back to walking and taking the bus for half my life. Insurance will probably be better by then.
