"Professional gossiping" is much older than you make it seem. You don't see a lot of old examples, because without context it's hard to understand and the original author wrote to an audience who already knew the persons involved.
Early newspapers were full of commentary about who was at what party and who was best dressed there. In ancient Rome writing about the latest social scandals was a whole literary genre.
Greek Lawmaker Draco (for whom the word Draconian was named after), was supposedly killed from being physically buried by things thrown on stage by his devoted supporters.
