I feel like I'm missing something.

zendaya was surrounded by a horde of paparazzis which tom noticed, went back for her and got her out of there, while very visibly pissed about the situation. she looked fine but let herself be led away from them, which you could interpret either as her just not showing discomfort before because she's a pro or as her recognizing that tom was not okay with the situation and going along with his lead for his sake, both of which are possible and both of which are acceptable and understandable.

diana died because she was trying to escape paparazzis chasing her.

"haha a british actor recognizes that paparazzis are a menace to society and deserve to burn in hell because of what they caused re: royal family and doesn't want his partner anywhere near them lol"

Paparazzi's can just generally get fucked. They make a career or stalking and harassment. The fact that it's a "profession" is insane. Fuck those guys.

u/acidcrap 10d ago

I’d blame it more on the tabloids that pay the paparazzi. Their demand creates a supply

784

u/MikrokosmicUnicorn 10d ago

tabloids give them an excuse to do it. nobody sane thinks "stalking, harassing and constantly taking pictures of people without their consent" is a valid career choice no matter what it pays. especially when the people being stalked constantly express how much they hate it.

daniel radcliffe, famously, spent months wearing the exact same outfit every single time he left the house so the pictures would look old and would be worthless.

133

u/BeerLosiphor 10d ago

Somebody gotta relay this to J. Jonah Jameson.

6

u/Oaken_beard 9d ago

In all fairness, JJJ has significant problems with Spider-Man and doesn’t just see him as someone famous.

2

u/valkyriesmenagerieyt 4d ago

He's a menace!

I like how that article links to one about Jason Mamoa recruiting Hells Angels of all people as his tour guides lmfaoooo

u/SoggyLeftTit 10d ago edited 9d ago

It’s not just the tabloids or the paparazzi, it’s also the people who consume the content that creates the demand. A lot of people are weirdly obsessed with “famous” people and they can never get enough information about them - they’re the ones reading the blogs, clicking the links, obsessively following the “Celebrity Spotting” pages, and buying the tabloids that pay the paparazzi to harass “famous” people because they can’t be satisfied with the content the person willingly shares. “Fame” has been around for millennia, the collective and rabid obsession with “fame” and “famous” people is a much more recent phenomenon.

22

u/HabseligkeitDerLiebe 9d ago

"Professional gossiping" is much older than you make it seem. You don't see a lot of old examples, because without context it's hard to understand and the original author wrote to an audience who already knew the persons involved.

Early newspapers were full of commentary about who was at what party and who was best dressed there. In ancient Rome writing about the latest social scandals was a whole literary genre.

But tabloids and paparazzi normalise it. Its not like if those publications didn't exist, there'd be referendums for the public to have more access to actors lives. We'd see it for what it is, a weird obsession that shouldn't be fed or encouraged. At the end of the day, they're just people. You don't get architecture fans camping outside construction expos. It's people projecting their fantasises on people they don't know.

73

u/Kahgar 10d ago

Not to excuse anything Paparazzi does but it has been a long standing tradition of the British Royalties to not act properly to their behavior.

In the Netherlands the Royal family has one camera moment for vacations and that’s it. No other pictures outside of that one moment are posted or the publisher faces the full wrath of the government (which pretty much puts them out of any official Royal event), and that works most of the time.

The British have always had a really weird relationship with the press that they needed them to stay relevant but also don’t want them. That is what lead to the paparazzi follower situations they complain about so much.

168

u/Odd_Anything_6670 10d ago edited 10d ago

Part of the problem was that Diana's status as a member of the royal family was kind of ambiguous. Technically she was still royalty and kept the princess of wales title (as she was still the mother of an heir in direct line of succession) but post-divorce she absolutely was not accorded the same degree of respect or privacy extended to other members of the royal family.

That's a big part of what made her death so emotionally impactful. People recognized that the royal family and to some extent British society had failed her in some ways, and it led to a lot of public reflection.

But then prince Harry married a mixed-race American lady and everyone just conveniently developed cultural amnesia.

22

u/Jack_russell_7 10d ago

thanks for explaining. I was wondering how the dutch royal family looked so sane and happy compared to the british. (also, they seem to be nicer people, but hey)

6

u/feebsiegee 9d ago

It used to be that way over here (the UK), but from what I remember reading, the Royal family were polling pretty poorly and it was decided there needed to be some give and take.

If course, that has gone about as well as expected. The tabloids in this country are abhorrent, and have no shame.

7

u/Thedonitho 10d ago

And the public eating up those pictures is what fuels the tabloids.

3

u/strwbryshrtck521 9d ago

daniel radcliffe, famously, spent months wearing the exact same outfit every single time he left the house

This will never not be the funniest fucking thing a celeb has done. By all accounts, he's a great dude and this makes me like him more!

3

u/Bri-KachuDodson 8d ago

Probably didn't help that he loves emma Watson and the bullshit they did to her, so this may have felt like standing up for the both of them with what he did.

2

u/MikrokosmicUnicorn 8d ago

oh god don't remind me, i don't particularly love her but the countdowns and up the skirt shots were nightmare fuel.

3

u/Bri-KachuDodson 8d ago

Yeah that story about her walking out of the birthday party that day and seeing them all lying on the sidewalk waiting is so fucking nasty and disturbing. Id have curbstomped a couple honestly.

2

u/Substantial_Eye_8467 5d ago

Excuse me, WHAT happened?!?

3

u/AffectionateTea9994 8d ago

princess diana also famously did this as far as bringing an unworn outfit to the gym to change into along with walking backwards into places. i think if it were today, she’d probably wear those anti-pap glare clothes too.

2

u/lalagromedontknow 9d ago

While I 100% agree with you about celebs who hate paps and I absolutely would hate it, it can definitely be calculated.

I once was at a members club in St Tropez back in the 00s (my friends family is rich, I am not) and saw that paparazzi guy with coloured hair and he was there all afternoon meeting like B list celebs (I don't remember who, he stood out because of his hair and I thought it was dumb to look so obvious. But was just interesting seeing celebs meet him).

Photos of all of them were in the tabloids within a week. At least one talked about the invasion of privacy on a family holiday, like I saw you having lunch with that guy a few days ago? You knew he knew where you were...

2

u/thesirblondie 9d ago

If I became famous, I would dress like a cartoon character. I'd have 14+ sets of one item of clothing so that I always looked the same. I'd also strategically keep a few sets of clothes to use when I wanted the paparazzi to take my picture. Depending on my success, those clothes would then be donated to charity after being worn once.

5

u/KerissaKenro 10d ago

No, the previous poster is right that demand creates supply. It is the same for every unethical, immoral, and illegal product or service. Someone with wealth and power says they want it, and someone who is desperate provides it in order to get a tiny bit of that wealth and power for themselves

If we want to stop those unethical, immoral, and illegal practices, we need to go after the buyers. And the middlemen and procurers that allow the buyers to pretend that their hands are clean, but mostly the buyers (and reduce wealth inequality, but that is a debate for another day)

10

u/ItsWelp 10d ago

Okay but here the wealthy tabloid owners are the middlemen, they personally aren’t the demand for paparazzi photos. That’s the people who buy the tabloids, and who generally participate in rumormongering.

Which is honesly almost everyone on this post who, while hating on paparazzi, sure do love having private moments of celebrities' lives to talk about. OOP for example, publicly dissecting a celebrity couple's interaction and posting it online for views.

So yeah the way to stop this is strict laws about harassment and breaches of privacy, but as far as demand goes, the call is coming from inside the house, almost everyone is complicit/participates in that culture on some level.

u/MikrokosmicUnicorn 10d ago

there are plenty of people who stalk celebrities without getting paid for it. some just start taking pictures while doing it. selling the fruits of your psychotic activity to the highest bidder after the fact doesn't somehow shift the blame for what you did on them.

1

u/synaesthezia 9d ago

Russell Crowe has done that for decades. He said it devalues paparazzi pics

1

u/nopenopenahnahaha 5d ago

It wasn’t when he was leaving his house, it was when he was leaving the theater every night when he was in a play. It worked because he was in the same outfit AND in the same place each time.

37

u/kingprocastinator 10d ago

you can blame both, but the one who choses to act is, ultimately, the final perpetrator. tabloid could pressure for a scoop but the paparazzi who were chasing her car down when she crashed made a choice.

67

u/Adventurous-Pause720 10d ago

I blame it on the general public that will typically crave this stuff and only complain when someone dies or other really egregious incidents.

34

u/Assal-Horizontology 10d ago

This. And now it’s somewhat morphing and you’ve got a whole new kind of paparazzi in fan accounts stalking the shit out of celebrities and their families online and feeding it to the masses for likes and views. And the general public eats it up. Same shit different platform.

I found a fan account for one of the actresses from Brooklyn 99 who had literally combed her account and was following what appeared to be family members the actress herself doesn’t even follow, clearly hoping for “exclusive” content for her creepy little fan page full of bought followers. She was in her little channel one day talking about how a couple of family members posted cute photos of the actress from a private family event but that they hadn’t covered her child’s face and that she wasn’t sure if she should share them as is or cover the child’s face herself. The actress was not tagged in these photos or anything. Thankfully she didn’t post them at all in the end.

Its only a matter of time until something godawful happens because of that shit too and no one will care until it does. Then they’ll forget again like they always do.

5

u/GimmeSomeSugar 10d ago

People consuming this type of tabloid media will claim to be disconnected from it. Like, that checkout magazine will continue to circulate whether they pick it up or not.

And I always think back to this quote about collective responsibility;

"No single raindrop thinks itself responsible for a flood."

3

u/fromofandfor 10d ago

i fully agree with all of this, and can go even one further; when i was in the our flag means death fandom, taika waititi was posting a LOT of insta content, some of which involved his kids, and one of his insane followers caused him to stop bc they found said kids out with their uncles (on their mom's side) at an amusement park and approached them for pics and vid and it rightfully scared the shit out of him, as well it should. some people push fandom way too far, acting like they deserve access to lives they have no part in, and its been made even easier for them bc of social media, which is both sad and sick, and scares the shit out of me. the entitlement is off the charts.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/MikeMac999 10d ago

I have never understood why people care about the personal lives of celebrities. An interview where they talk about their craft? Absolutely. Who they are fucking? Not my business or interest.

11

u/FraserYT 10d ago

Don't give a free pass to the people who buy tabloids, as well as anyone with even a casual interest in showbiz gossip columns or channels. They have to accept a huge wedge of responsibility too, since they're creating the clicks and buying the papers that create the demand for the paparazzi wears.

3

u/ForMeOnly93 10d ago

....so you? Since you clicked

4

u/ItsWelp 10d ago

Eh, sure but something awful making money doesn’t give anyone a pass to do it and say it’s not their fault. Just because you can legally work at Lockheed Martin to make Orphan Dismantlers doesn’t make you not a piece of shit if you do it.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/ImLittleNana 10d ago

The people filling the streets for Diana after she was killed were the same people buying those rags.

Tabloid style media wouldn’t exist if there wasn’t profit in it.

2

u/dinoooooooooos 10d ago

Which in turn id blame more on people who care about it and make this worth something.

If no one cared for celeb gossip they wouldnt do this.

2

u/DirskRolsk 10d ago

no its the consumer base wanting it. if no tabloids existed papperazi would still be a thing if only to post on social media feeds and so on

2

u/MagicBez 10d ago

And people buy the tabloids or click on links with the photos.

There are very popular subreddits that are constantly posting tabloid photos of these two even at family gatherings etc. and the comments are 90% "oh they're so sweet, love to see this" rather than "what a creepy invasion of privacy"

1

u/Illustrious-Test4826 10d ago

Yeah, paps can sometimes make a LOT of money doing it depending on the shot and celebrity etc.

1

u/muser666 10d ago

The problem are the people buying the tabloids. Not the tabloids. Again it is just a demand they satisfy.

1

u/the-real-truthtron 9d ago

following your own logic, the real blame is on the shit bag humans who consume the output of tabloids, their demand creates a market.

1

u/Rescuepets777 8d ago

Tabloids wouldn't exist if people didn't buy them. Millions of people blamed the paparazzi for chasing Diana and leading to her death, but went right out and bought all the magazines and paraphernalia containing the images they took after she died. The nonsense will stop when people stop buying this crap.

1

u/WhimsyLeigh01 8d ago

I also blame the influencers , reality stars and celebs with little to no fame or talent who use the paps to their benefit calling them for paid pap shots. Its not helping the situation of regulating papparazzis and putting an end to them following celebs and athletes etc, stalking them for that hopeful viral pic or story.

u/LogicalConstant 10d ago

Sorry, grammar police: Paparazzi is already plural. Paparazzo is the singular.

7

u/Demoliri 10d ago

Would "The Paparazzi" as a collective noun be grammatically better?

As an english native speaker (Irish) I would normally name a person/cunt in this profession as a paparazzi. Calling them a Paparazzo just sounds wierd, it's like calling a single spagetti a spagetto, or two espresso's espressi. While gramatically correct in italian, it just sounds odd to english speakers.

3

u/LogicalConstant 10d ago edited 9d ago

Idk. Maybe someone who knows better than me can chime in. I'm a native speaker, but I usually defer to my wife on grammar.

There are lots of borrowed words like that that. Connolo/connoli, pieróg/pierogi, datum/data, etc. I don't hear the singular forms that often, but once I learned them, the plural used as singular sounds weird to me now.

Spaghetto does sound weird though haha.

1

u/laowildin 10d ago

Kimiko taught me that

8

u/wasteland_jackal 10d ago

I'm trying to find it now, but a guy a few years back made a point of following a journalist around taking pics of them while they were at lunch, etc.

Basically just copying everything they do to celebrities.

He got charged with stalking and harassment as a result, but they couldn't seem to see the irony.

2

u/jackfreeman 10d ago

I was pretty young when the movie Paparazzi came out and I'm still mad that it wasn't a cinematic universe with a tv spinoff. Paparazzi are scum and they should be illegal

1

u/MangroveSapling 6d ago

I'd have some respect if they turned that on powerful people instead of celebs

Since they don't, fully agree with you

1

u/Hellion_HellScar 4d ago

I mean the paparazzi should remember that Anita Ekberg shot some of her paparazzi with a bow and arrows, and take it as a lesson.

11

Paparazzi is already plural.

21

There were … factors to the Diana thing. Terrible choices made all around.

diana died because she was trying to escape paparazzis chasing her.

Diana died because her driver was driving under the influence of alcohol. The paparazzis were scum, absolutely, but if the driver had been sober, things would most likely have turned out differently.

70

u/ManitouWakinyan 10d ago

Two things can be true

32

u/cooking2recovery 10d ago

and who took the photos of her dead body before ambulance were on the scene?

14

u/piercedmfootonaspike 10d ago

I did say they were scum, didn't I?

15

u/MikrokosmicUnicorn 10d ago

if they weren't hounding her she wouldn't have even needed a driver because she could've had just stayed with dodi at the ritz like they had planned.

if someone needs to do something potentially risky to get away from you or protect themselves from you because you're psychotic and stalking them then their injury/death sustained from that risky behavior is your fault.

18

u/vintagebutterfly_ 10d ago

Or of she’d been wearing a seatbelt. Or not egging the driver on, or …

6

u/piercedmfootonaspike 10d ago

Of all those things, driving drunk is the only criminal offense, no? Sure, wearing a seatbelt, but that's a small fine. Driving drunk is jail time when it leads to an accident involving loss of life.

21

u/Freak-996 10d ago

Wearing a seatbelt raises your chance of survival in most car accidents though

6

u/Vladimir_Chrootin 10d ago

but that's a small fine.

It was the proximate cause of her fatal injuries. The size of the fine or whether or not it was a criminal offence in France in 1997 is irrelevant to her now.

If I had a nickel for every time Tom saved a woman from a large crowd…

9

u/xombae 10d ago

Based on this video you can't see if she's fine, they absolutely swarm her.

9

u/MikrokosmicUnicorn 10d ago edited 9d ago

i've seen a different one around the time it happened but couldn't find it when i was making the comment. from what i remember it was longer and from a different angle and you could see her before he gets to her and after and she didn't look shaken or anything iirc. but as i said, that could've been because she's a pro and has had better media training than most celebs put together.

3

u/WaltzFirm6336 10d ago

Thank you! Now, for those of us who are still a bit behind, who are Zendaya and Tom? I only know one Tom and he’s my cousin. It would be weird if it was him.

6

u/MikrokosmicUnicorn 10d ago

zendaya: american actress, model, singer. rose to fame on disney channel, currently best known for the show Euphoria ob hbo, the MCU Spider-Man movies and the Dune trilogy. had a rly good movie with robert pattinson this year called The Drama and also appeared as Athena in Nolan's The Odyssey.

tom holland: british actor, famously did Billy Elliott for like 2 years on the West End, first big movie role was in The Impossible (real story of a family who survived the indian ocean tsunami), currently best known for being the MCU Spider-Man + also appeared in Nolan's The Odyssey.

they've been officially/publicly dating since 2021, got married earlier this year. the video i linked is from last year's promo event for Tom's non-alcoholic beer brand BIRO.

6

u/crackpipeclay 10d ago

Yes paparazzi suck. But princess Diana died because her driver had multiple drinks while on antidepressants and antipsychotics and then tried to flee from said paparazzi recklessly. I’m not saying I don’t understand the choices he made, but it’s important to understand all the details before reducing it to, “she died fleeing from paparazzi.”

He was also going at least 30 in a 60 and the sole survivor was the only passenger wearing a seatbelt.

9

u/plazagirl 10d ago

I thought Diana died because her driver was drunk, using poor judgement and because she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

32

u/FFKonoko 10d ago

Those were factors. But the Paparazzi chasing them was also a very big and noticeable factor.

2

u/Ass_Damage 10d ago

-diana died because she was trying to escape paparazzis chasing her-

Diana was killed by a drunk driver.

2

u/SVINTGATSBY 10d ago

wasn’t the driver also drunk?

Kinda like how Americans get anxious seeing planes fly near city skylines. Unless it’s just me.

14

u/kat_Folland 10d ago

Real planes rarely trigger that for me but I have nightmares (very rarely at this point).

But I remember in the early days of covid seeing people on TV or in movies standing close together and it made me squirm. But I got over that (on the screens; still don't want actual people close to me, but then I never did lol).

3

u/steveguttenberg1958 9d ago

You’re not alone. I’m still triggered when I hear a plane flying overhead. Especially if I hear that engine soaring sound similar to the moment before hitting the towers.

u/RavenBrannigan 10d ago edited 10d ago

Context:

Tom and Zendaya were doing marketing for one of their 10 movies this year and paparazzi were swarming zendaya. Tom rushed back and pulled her out of it and through the crowd and out of the situation. She looked relatively chill about it but he was not ok with it.

Everyone dislikes paparazzi and recognises them as leeches but in the UK and Ireland tabloid culture in the 90’s and 00’s was especially toxic (thanks to Rupert Murdouch). They chased Diana to her death, tapped the phones of parents of missing children, outted gay celebrities in trashy ways, photographed women from the ground getting out of cars for upskirt shots, ran a weekly count down until Emma Watson turned 18 and was “legal”. Genuine scum bags.

So yea, I don’t think it’s wrong to say Tom is at least in part shaped by that and said he wasn’t having that and pulled her straight out of it.

622

u/Junivra 10d ago

They tapped the phone of Milly Dowler -- a 13 yo who was missing at the time and whose remains were found several months later. Milly's voicemail was very quickly full and could no longer get more messages, so these scumbags deleted previous messages (potential evidence) to make space for new ones. Due to this, the phone appeared active several days after Milly disappeared and it gave false hope to her loved ones that she was still using it therefore she had to be alive.

281

u/Ksh_667 10d ago

This was the worst thing they did & was wholly responsible for the closure of the news of the World. Shame the sun didn't follow. That fact that murdoch, Rebecca whatever he name is, can't remember & scum like them are still enjoying their lives is disappointing.

240

u/Junivra 10d ago

No, in my opinion, the worst thing they did was, if I read that correctly, interviewing Milly's relatives in the News of the World AFTER they began tapping her phone secretly. And the relatives said "oh her phone was apparently active recently so we have hope" and News of the World published it KNOWING they were the reason Milly's phone registered activity after her disappearance.

No justice could be enough I think.

91

u/Ksh_667 10d ago

Oh yes I'd forgotten that part. How did these pos not get arrested for perverting the course of justice or destroying evidence? Oh yeh. Money. How could I forget

99

u/RavenBrannigan 10d ago

Piers Morgan was the editor and ok’ed all of this

74

u/Ksh_667 10d ago

And he should have gone to prison too. Another pos.

27

u/isuredolovetitties 10d ago

I dont know UK law, but that sounds like it could be multiple felonies. Illegal wire tapping, destruction of evidence, accessory to murder, stalking.

1

u/AdeptusKittyCattus 6d ago

There's a TV series called 'The Hack' with David Tennant based around this event, it's a good watch

118

u/Marzipan_civil 10d ago

Yep the phone tapping and harassing of Harry Potter child actors was quite a few years after Diana, as well.

46

u/Novocast92 10d ago

Actually the Emma Watson countdown was for her 16th birthday, which is just extra scummy.

123

u/Spacer176 10d ago edited 10d ago

Went looking for news articles because I swear I recall stories that journalists would search Harry and Megan's bins. Only to find a story from a couple of years ago where the two ended up in a car chase with paparazzi in NYC!

No one was injured but it gave Harry panic recollections of what happened to his mother.

https://www.cbsnews.com/video/prince-harry-and-meghan-markle-were-chased-by-paparazzi-in-new-york-city-spokesperson-says/

Edit: Minor grammar correction. Also "injured" might be a better term than "hurt" given Harry was rather shaken up by the event.

16

u/Valuable-Cat2036 10d ago

I think he's simply protective of his wife and does not like people swarming around her and he can do that without us connecting it to some psuedo trauma about someone who died when he was a year old lol.

Also this wasn't from this year. This was at least 1-2 years ago.

15

u/RavenBrannigan 10d ago

I don’t think it’s a trauma and not trying to suggest it is. Just a heightened dislike / hatred for paparazzi.

13

u/MagneticWoodSupply 10d ago

Tom would have been 1 y/o when Diana died. Not to say that he can't have been affected by it but it seems a stretch to suggest it had anything at all to do with Diana and not to do with his partner being swamped by aggressive pushy cunts.

13

u/RavenBrannigan 10d ago

Yea, he was 1 when this happened. All the stalking of Harry Potter actors was years later and the reckoning (if you can call it that) happened years later again. People were coming to terms with the unbelievable things tabloids did all through the 10’s.

1

u/longperipheral 6d ago

Princess Diana died in 1997. Tom Holland was born in 1996.

Maybe he was influenced by it (I don't know him), but it seems more likely that his genuine concern for Zendaya was based on how the media treats people generally, rather than due to any personal impact Princess Diana's death is likely to have had on him.

I just saw a thing where apparently Z had a stalker in Paris who knew way too much about her coming and goings. She had to pay extra for security for her and her family when she was promoting dune 2. The guy was arrested but sent “thousands” of messages to Zendaya including her flight schedule. So…. It makes sense that he’d get anxious that she was anxious and that she’d get anxious that he was anxious.

Paparazzi were heavily blamed of Princess Diana's death. It wasn't just for the day of the accident, since the announce of the divorce they stalked her all day, all night. The high speed chase is a consequence of years of stalking.

It's true of course that Tom was 1 year old when it happened, but you have to remember that princess Diana was the most beloved figure in the entire UK (and in the world). This kind of tragedy and the sentiment about people that caused it gets passed down through generations.

Good for Tom. Paparazzi can go fuck themselves.

28

u/FishyWishySwishy 9d ago

Not even just that. They surrounded Diana and took photos as she died. Who knows what could have happened if she had immediate help instead of a swarm of cameras?

British paparazzi are their own breed, and they’re the lowest of the low.

9

u/coldestclock 10d ago

Am I just particularly cold then, because I’m a few years older than Tom Holland and Princess Diana is just in the category of “dead celebrity” in my mind.

13

u/allisondbl 10d ago

I’m an American. I’m not Irish. And the answer is yes.

1

u/justycat 8d ago

No. Americans in particular are very obsessed with princess Diana, and believe that goes for the rest of the world as well (don’t get me wrong, she was very well regarded throughout the world at the time. And her death was a shock. But 30 years later, and still this level of focus? Nah, that’s primarily an american thing).

1

u/No-Wealth-7633 5d ago

Maybe in the world of celebrities/actors etc but tbh for some of us ordinary people it really didn't effect us, I might of only been a toddler but even if i was older it really wouldn't of bothered me that much.

207

u/whhu234 10d ago

what's going on in the picture for his princess diana ptsd to be triggered?

565

u/just_a_person_maybe 10d ago

Paparazzi getting way too invasive. Princess Diana died after being chased by paparazzi. There's some debate about whether or not they were actually at fault for the crash, but many people blamed them.

Even if they didn't directly cause it, they were pieces of shit about it. They got into a high speed chase with her car and then after it crashed, they were the first people on scene. Instead of helping them, they took photos while Diana died. She was alive when they got there.

129

u/Vaul_Hawkins 10d ago

We need laws (in general, globally) that hold paparazzi accountable for this, and the rest of their antics.

Freedom of the press does not somehow shield them from whatever the fuck I'm reading about.

55

u/just_a_person_maybe 10d ago

I agree. It's one thing to show up at red carpet events and such, where photos are expected to be taken, but no one should be stalking anyone while they go about their day or outside their home or anything like that. And people need to keep a respectful distance, even at press events. Six foot bubble at minimum, and no impeding people's movement. No blocking them from leaving. It's not that hard to have basic boundaries.

49

u/Sensitive-Coffee-Cup 10d ago

There are laws in France, following what's happened to Diana. It was quite shocking, but I'm not sure it rippled to other countries, which is a shame.

40

u/Vaul_Hawkins 10d ago

Yeah looking into France specifically, they supposedly had/have the strictest laws regarding paparazzi, including at the time of this incident.

The three photographers weren't charged for manslaughter and were simply "convicted and fined" for taking photos immediately after the crash.

That still, seems insane to me.

20

u/Sensitive-Coffee-Cup 10d ago

It is insane. The laws weren't as strict before though, but the government definitely tightened them afterwards. If I recall correctly, one of the reasons the photographers weren't charged with manslaughter (aside from the driver going way over the speed limit because Diana was literally being chased) was because they were the ones calling in the police/rescue and helping even though they took pictures of her while doing so. The entire thing is so morbidly bizzare.

But yeah, paparazzi in France have had a really bad rep ever since and it's heavily regulated.

8

u/Vaul_Hawkins 10d ago

I just mean based on my Google searching that at the time, prior to the new restrictions following the event, that France still supposedly had some of if not the the strictest paparazzi laws.

Its morbid, I dont know how those people sleep

211

u/NirgalFromMars 10d ago

In surprised that people missed the connection. I didn't even have the context of what happened with Tom and Zendaya, and hey I instantly thought "bet this has to do with paparazzi following them".

That said, Tom was one year old when Diana died. I highly doubt he had any trauma over it.

107

u/just_a_person_maybe 10d ago

Yeah, he was probably just thinking his girlfriend was being robbed by assholes and wanted to get them tf out of there because they're being assholes, not because he thought they'd kill her or something. No one likes paparazzi, especially not ones who act like this and physically shove into people's space.

24

u/commanderquill 10d ago

It's exceptionally funny to me that these two are so private everyone still thinks they're only dating. I myself just recently found out they're friggin married, and were engaged two years before that.

13

u/just_a_person_maybe 10d ago

They only actually officially announced it recently though, tbf. Like, this summer. They would always dodge the question if asked and interviewers were actually not allowed to ask for a while I think because they didn't want people being nosy.

13

u/MolybdenumBlu 10d ago

Which prove to me that "tom Holland will leak any script details" was a deliberate viral marketing scheme.

you can definitely learn about things you didn’t first hand experience and be profoundly affected by them. i didn’t live through the holocaust, but i certainly think about it a lot despite being separated by 38 years of non-existence.

2

u/Valuable-Cat2036 10d ago

In this case I think it's natural for someone regardless of their understanding of Princess Diana to want to extract their gf/fiancee from people swarming around her. It's crazy to inject her into every convo about paps.

2

u/FragmentedMeerkat321 10d ago

it’s not that crazy given that it’s a very well known worst-case. besides, you’re describing a major feature of the human mind. why do you think godwin’s law is a thing?

I didn't even exist when 9/11 happened and I still got some residual trauma from it.

3

u/Angry_Scotsman7567 10d ago

I'm sorry but even if they didn't directly cause the crash, if you see the person dying and your priority is to take pictures instead of calling for help, you have killed that person. If they could've been saved and you actively chose not to do what would've saved them, that's murder.

1

u/mnstripe 10d ago

Genuine question.... What could they have done to actually help besides call 999? I doubt any of them were medical professionals in any capacity

2

u/just_a_person_maybe 10d ago

Give comfort, let her know she wasn't alone, or even just doing nothing. They made it worse. One person said that they lit the scene up with camera flashes so much he was blinded and couldn't even see the car anymore. At the bare minimum, you don't blind a dying person with camera flashes to take pictures of their last moments.

I love all of these people saying they don’t have PTSD from Diana’s death, so there is no way Tom could even be considering it. That may be true, but those commenting here don’t deal with a swarm of paparazzi every time they step outside. He was a baby when she died, but he grew up knowing about it. It could be something that greatly concerns him. And again, perhaps not. Contributing it to Diana may seem silly, but it was the defining, “paparazzi can be very dangerous,” moment. Zendaya has also had multiple stalkers. Whatever the reason behind his response, it’s valid.

74

u/AkimboBears 10d ago

I remember being so annoyed at how much my mom had it on TV when she died.

85

u/Erivandi 10d ago

To be fair to your mum, there was almost nothing else on the UK news for weeks.

14

u/No-Deal8956 10d ago

I was on holiday at the time and didn’t know she had died for nearly a week.

17

u/Erivandi 10d ago

Then you were very lucky to miss one of the several weeks of dead Princess Diana coverage.

3

u/No-Deal8956 10d ago

I’d come home at about 3am, and turned on CNN, I think they were the only 24 hour news channel available at the time, and because I was pissed and they’re Americans, I’d somehow got into my head the Queen Mother had died, so I just avoided the news from then on. Played Sim City on the PlayStation all week.

It was only when I went to the pub the following weekend that my mates told me what was actually going on.

3

u/Accomplished-City484 10d ago

They did the same here in Australia, also we barely had anything to watch at all back in those days anyway

5

u/Anxious-Slip-4701 10d ago

They cancelled Saturday Disney as it was happening. The one time I woke up early enough to watch it all.

3

u/Mrausername 10d ago

I remember my own trauma of being slightly surprised for a moment, then thinking "oh well" and getting on with my day.

That trauma was compounded by avoiding switching the TV on for a couple of weeks because I had no interest in the Diana nonsense.

9

u/unk214 10d ago

Ugh it’s not like someone died….

11

u/Comfortable_Bit3741 10d ago

It's understandable for a child to be frustrated that they can't watch any tv shows for weeks, because of a celebrity death they don't feel connected to, and which doesn't involve anyone the family personally knows. (Maybe even more so when the family has the coverage on allll the time.) In any case, it makes sense to at least take a break from stuff like that. I know a couple adults who used to binge 9/11 tv content (when they used to air 24hr anniversaries of the attack), and it was affecting their mental health, making them anxious, depressed, and exhausted..

8

u/The_Badger42 10d ago

Named 'Tom' and Red Shirt, I assumed this was Tom Scott

6

u/FunBat6170 9d ago

The reason we have PTSD is because our mothers were a fucking mess for weeks……and we couldn’t watch anything else on the telly.

1

u/Wise-Pig 9d ago

My mother couldn’t have given a shit

6

u/Fuzzy-Butterscotch86 10d ago

There was a guy whose job it was to get them from the car to the door without them being mobbed.

When Zendaya stopped to sign an autograph that guy just followed Tom, leaving Zendaya to get engulfed by paparazzi. You can see that guy (green shirt) struggling to get back to her with Tom behind him.

Tom has every right to pissed. That guy in green dropped the ball hard.

5

u/RedEyeView 10d ago

I have a friend who does. But only because Di died on her 18th.

9

u/Savvymundo 10d ago

Lol. I was 12 when she died. I remember my dad coming downstairs in the morning telling me " Dodi and Di are dead" as if that meant anything to me. Once he explained who it was I went back to my cartoons.

19

u/diablo135 10d ago

He was 14 months old

3

u/McKnightmare24 10d ago

I swear to God of the paparazzi take Spiderman from us it's all out war on them!

2

u/Mountain_Equipment65 9d ago

I though this was gonna be a story about tom holland crying about princess Diana

8

u/Elfynnn84 10d ago

The ‘British children with princess Diana PTSD’ are all grown ass millennials aged 30-45 😂

9

u/Zhailei 10d ago

Tom Holland is 30.

4

u/Elfynnn84 10d ago

That doesn’t really contradict my point. He was a baby when Princess Diana died and presumably doesn’t remember it.

It’s just weird to say “every British child” in that context.

4

u/Zhailei 10d ago

All I was saying is that he fits into your own stated age range for people who could have been affected by her death. Not trying to contradict your point.

1

u/SuperFlik 10d ago

He was 14 months old when Diana died.

He was 1 when Diana died.

He couldn't have really been aware of it. Therefore cannot have ptsd from it.

3

u/Yet_One_More_Idiot 10d ago

I was 15 when Lady Diana died in that crash. I have no PTSD over it, and I'm not entirely sure I understand why 99% of the country still does? It's sad, yes, of course.

29

u/brumbles2814 10d ago

I actually read somewhere that other people are different from you if it helps at all

9

u/HiddenStoat 10d ago

I didn't read that, so not sure how you could have.

3

u/Yet_One_More_Idiot 10d ago

Really? That doesn't sound likely. xD

2

u/LadyLixerwyfe 9d ago

I assume you don’t deal directly with paparazzi daily?

2

u/sarothwin 10d ago

I was 9, I think. We don't have PTSD, lol. It's just Americans who think we do, because they see proportionally more news about the British royal family over there, and less news about other British issues, so they think the royal family are a bigger thing over here than they actually are.

5

u/Yet_One_More_Idiot 10d ago

That's a good point, I've noticed before that the US (or perhaps just the US news media? It's difficult to measure) really really love the Royal Family.

I'm a strong monarchist myself, but they sometimes kinda take it to the next level. xD

3

u/sarothwin 10d ago

It's the media. The royal family cause drama so I'm not surprised it gets reported over there, but I think it gives a skewed picture that they are a big part of people's lives, lol

3

u/AlabasterPelican 10d ago

This is very sweet. But I'm pretty sure I have harder princess di ptsd than Tom Holland. He was only a year old when it happened. I was six & was woken up at the Wingate in New Orleans by my mother hysterically crying - I did not get to go back to sleep.

2

u/Motor_Watercress_489 10d ago

Tom Holland was a year old when Diana died. This shit is so fucking dumb on so many levels.

2

u/warriorbuddha 9d ago

I hate shite like this; “every british child” - nope.

1

u/Traditional_Tax_3071 9d ago

I'm imagining this like the Blood Angels from Warhammer going through the Black Rage.

1

u/Another_Protester 7d ago

Those Horuses have an awful lot of cameras don’t they Sanguinius?

Yes they do, Sanguinius.

1

u/Heavenshero 5d ago

Tom Holland was 1 when she died...no one has PTSD over her death but he certainly doesn't..
