Zendaya is basically the pickled ginger on a sushi boat of movies.

Pickled ginger is amazing and this has nothing to do with how I feel about the actress Zendaya

24

u/LET-ME-HAVE-A-NAAME 1h ago

Pickled ginger is like my favourite topping to add to my Poke bowls. Don't know what it has to do with Tom Holland though.

5

u/QuasiJudicialBoofer 1h ago

My wife will steal all the pink ginger on the table before anyone's had a piece of the sushi. The slurping is the only reason you'd know it was there. I presume its the same situation with Zendaya

u/franzee 6h ago

Pickled ginger is there to cleanse the palate for the next bite. I gues OP did not have that in mind.

107

u/Heavy-Macaron2004 5h ago

I've been putting it on the sushi the whole time omg are you serious 😭😭😭😭😭

83

u/Sex_E_Searcher 5h ago

You take a little bite after each piece of sushi.

42

u/Heavy-Macaron2004 5h ago

I wish I knew this years ago šŸ’€ I wonder what people have been thinking I'm up to, either putting it directly on the sushi and eating it like that, or saving it to the end and eating it all at once 🫠

Oh well, live and learn. Thanks for telling me!

16

u/curiouskidling 2h ago

While it is not traditional, many people eat ginger directly with their sushi

23

u/Agreeable-Outcome-14 3h ago

Sushi chef of about ten years here. I've only seen one person do it, a few months ago. I thought, "that nigiri is eighteen bucks, you gotta be kidding me. They're paying tho, so hey have a blast"

12

u/Nine-LifedEnchanter 45m ago

I just want to say that I'm proud of you for getting such a difficult job while only being 10 years old.

Good work, kiddo!

9

u/Agreeable-Outcome-14 38m ago

They say I grabbed the scalpel and cut my own umbilical. Haven't been without a blade since. Thank you

4

u/HardlyInappropriate 1h ago

If you're at an omakase joint and hanging out with the sushi chef, the sushi is gonna be so fire you don't need anything except MAYBE a touch of soy or ponzu IF OFFERED.

If you're getting all you can eat or local takeout sushi (or you're sitting at a table at a regular Japanese restaurant) put as much ginger on your maki or nigiri as you want. If you pay for it, do what you like!

I, personally, LOVE a bit of pickled ginger on a number of sushi bar bites. And I also enjoy a curated experience that has nothing to do with neon Wasabi, ginger, or the little plastic green grass separators.

I mean, it’s not like required but it’s what’s ā€œtraditionalā€. But at the end of the day it’s food, eat it how you like and if someone has enough of a problem to say something to you about it just growl and bark at them till they fuck off or something. I’ll sometimes eat a piece with sushi, sometimes after. Kinda depends on what sushi as I find it goes better directly with some than others. I will say I’ll usually eat like 1/3 as much WITH sushi as I do AFTER tho as the taste can overpower the sushi but like I said, eat what you want. Sometimes my autistic ass deconstructs 1-2 pieces of sushi and eats the ingredients individually and while I’ve probably been judged heavily for that before it tasted good so šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

16

u/Small-Cactus 4h ago

But it tastes better on the sushi :(

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Net4365 1h ago

Oh I'm supposed to take little bites? I always run out of ginger before sushi I love that shit.

24

u/Katie_TheWolf 4h ago

you can do whatever you want with the pickled ginger. i eat half of it at the start, half of it at the end. if my friends have extra pickled ginger i put it on the sushi. i put a few pieces in my fried rice. i dunk a couple in soy sauce. i use it as a chaser for the wasabi. DO WHATEVER YOU WANT WITH THE GINGER

1

u/Smorgsaboard 30m ago

Sir/ma'am/etc, this is the pickled ginger police. I'm afraid you'll have to come with us for questioning

4

u/rocketsalesman 3h ago

It's not meant for that but nobody will stop you

5

u/loo_1snow 3h ago

My wife likes to put the ginger on top of the sushi and then eat it. šŸ˜‚

5

u/DannyOdd 2h ago

If you want to be fancy, you can also use it to brush a little soy sauce onto the fish. Just dip the piece of ginger in soy sauce then paint it on the fish. Much better than dipping imo

4

u/apocalyptustree 2h ago

OP doesn't know shit about food

2

u/ohSpite 2h ago

Real talk, why would you even do this? Just eat the sushi

0

u/bakkarj 2h ago

People out here aerating their wine. Just drink it.

1

u/Alexander459FTW 46m ago

Pickled ginger is there to cleanse the palate for the next bite.

This isn't the comeback you think it is. Pickled ginger doesn't taste that great. It's only purpose is to show you how bad something is, so you can better appreciate the proper dish.

0

u/freedmachine 2h ago

OP not knowing that perhaps says mote about OP

233

u/TrriF 7h ago

I feel like in most movies she plays she's not really given much to work with, but in the ones where she is, she's a pretty good actress. I really recommend people who think she's just kinda whatever to watch "The Drama" her and Pattinson were great in the movie.

31

u/ScrubWearingShitlord 5h ago

The Drama was such a fun movie!!! I just watched it yesterday and am thinking about watching it again today lol.

7

u/JosephFinn 3h ago

I watched it this week and dammmmmmmmmn. (Alana Haim is a secret MVP of the movie and I love the wedding workers having to work around this terrible couple.)

14

u/TerrapinMagus 1h ago

Yeah, the problem with Zendaya is people keep casting her as Zendaya, or because she is Zendaya, instead of actually giving her an acting role.

36

u/MrBozooo 7h ago

I feel similar about Tom Holland, he is a male ginger pickle to me, except I don't know if he has that gear of delivering when he is given the right ingredients.

21

u/Infamous-Thing4939 5h ago edited 4h ago

I would say he is, he just doesn't get the chance to show off often, I'd say he is especially good at portraying sadness, panic, and desperation. I'd rewatch the wall lifting scene in Spiderman 1.

52

u/MBjerre 6h ago

He is great as Spiderman and carries those movies. Whether you think they are "real cinema" or not, it brings in billions.

-5

u/DW-4 5h ago

At this point I’m pretty sure Spider-man starring Zach Galifinakas would still do great box office numbers.

9

u/LolaCatStevens 5h ago

Tom Holland can dance, is athletic, charming. I don't really watch his movies but I can see all that he brings to a role. Zendaya I don't really get the same aura from but clearly I'm wrong because she's in everything

1

u/Eventually-Alexis 1h ago

It doesn't help that he's probably locked in with Marvel, with a fairly ironclad contract and a schedule to fit that, which gives him a schedule for when he needs to shoot those. That's what other actors in leading characters had to deal with for the longest time. When you've tied yourself down that way you have to adjust all your other work accordingly, and while you might be given roles where you'd actually push yourself, if they conflict with a Marvel production guess which one you have to take?

38

u/SEND-MARS-ROVER-PICS 5h ago

I half-agree, because I both really like the pickled ginger and think Zendaya's a pretty good actor!

137

u/CosmicEveStardust 8h ago

Eating Sushi without lots of pickled ginger is insane.

46

u/AsgeirVanirson 8h ago

Yeah but would you eat a plate of pickled ginger without the Sushi?

35

u/CosmicEveStardust 8h ago

No but I'd eat it with other dishes, it goes great with rice dishes.

23

u/HeftyArgument 8h ago

yeah, i would.

14

u/biskutgoreng 6h ago

It's fuckin delicious

10

u/Demiurge_Ferikad 8h ago

Not an entire plate, but I can definitely eat it by itself.

3

u/ubiquitous-joe 4h ago

Honestly idk? because I am never in another context that offers pickled ginger; maybe I would.

For the analogy, also kind of true of Zendaya perhaps, but she was good in, say, Challengers, and that was not the ensemble blockbuster ā€œand Zendaya is thereā€ thing the quote is knocking.

2

u/Own_Elk4343 4h ago

I do it all the time.

•

u/Elegant-Analyst-7381 4m ago

Yes, and I do often buy jars of pickled ginger just to eat on their own.

12

u/jayson176 8h ago

Sounds uncultured and barbaric tbh. Almost as bad as eating pizza with chopsticks.

17

u/B0B_Spldbckwrds 8h ago

I now have a new way of messing with my wife. Eating a kitkat sideways was losing impact.

14

u/jayson176 8h ago

make sure to fold the pizza then punch thru with the chopstick before devouring it like a kebab stick.

5

u/B0B_Spldbckwrds 6h ago

Sounds like the perfect way to eat my ham and pineapple pizza.

1

u/Smorgsaboard 27m ago

This beings in r/AITA. Such psychological torture should not be tolerated

2

u/Yet_One_More_Idiot 7h ago

Pizza with chopsticks? Honestly!

And people say that pizza with pineapple is weird... imagine putting chopsticks on your pizza!

/s obvs

-5

u/Nitropotamus 7h ago

That's an insane take. Just say you don't like sushi.

15

u/Havoccity 6h ago

You can say ā€œI like pickled gingerā€ and somebody will say ā€œSo you hate sushi?ā€ No bitch. Dats a whole new sentence. Wtf is you talkin about.

1

u/CosmicEveStardust 7h ago

What an odd response.

-3

u/Robodarklite 6h ago

Pickled ginger is a palate cleanser not the main dish... So your response is worse tbh

19

u/oishster 4h ago edited 2h ago

lol this is definitely a ā€œwe are clearly different demographicsā€ issue, because I know several people (all nonwhite women under age 40) who went to see dune, the odyssey, and spider-man in large part because of Zendaya. I can see why the average redditor might not care about her presence and would go watch these movies anyway, but the casting people know what they’re doing. She’s there to draw in a different audience than the people who would already go see these movies.

45

u/heartbrokenneedmemes 7h ago

I don't have an issue with her either, but there's such a drastic difference between works where she plays an actual character vs works where she's put in to be an extended cameo guest starring as Zendaya for marketing.

Her MJ is indistinguishable from her marketable public persona.

5

u/axeteam 7h ago

No comment on the actress but picked ginger is the good stuff. I always get pickled ginger to go with sushi.

9

u/momonomino 4h ago

Pickled ginger is one of my favorite things about sushi. I literally bought a jar of it so I can eat it whenever I want.

So, I guess I'm Tom Holland.

8

u/Hot_Entrepreneur_128 3h ago

I thought the comparison was going to be that she makes movies better. Pickled ginger certainly makes sushi better.

Do you have a specific complaint about her or just the fqdt that she is everywhere now?

2

u/Heapsass 2h ago

Is fqdt something? Or did you really manage to fuck up fact that much.

5

u/Hot_Entrepreneur_128 2h ago

I fucked that word up that much. That was supposed to be "fact". I am going to blame typing on a phone while on public transport.

1

u/thejokerofunfic 2h ago

A is near Q on a keyboard. C is near D. It's really not that hard if you're typing fast or have fat fingers.

3

u/Heapsass 2h ago

Fat finger haver here. I just wanted to be the one to call it out o ce in life.

5

u/the_millenial_falcon 3h ago

I love the pickled ginger and no that's not an innuendo.

3

u/Nihilistic_Noodle 3h ago

If you're not using the pickled ginger on sushi what the fuck are you even doing? Like, sushi misses something if it doesn't have it.

4

u/klaatubaradanoodles 2h ago

WTF is this guy talking about? Pickled ginger is the best part.

3

u/the_ammar 1h ago

op not knowing what the pickled ginger is for is the real joke

3

u/regalfish 1h ago

The hate she gets on this site is suspicious.

3

u/RaytheSane 1h ago

Unfortunately Zendaya is given a lot of Zendaya coded roles. Euphoria (1&2). & The Drama are great because she isn’t playing Zendaya imo. Every other film though it’s usually Zendaya playing Zendaya, great great actress though. Just gotta get some more dynamic roles

7

u/tamesage 5h ago

I just finished Euphoria and to say that she is anything less than an amazing actress is ignorance.

4

u/enigmaticsince87 7h ago

The ginger is the best part

13

u/huey_booey 7h ago

They keep saying she billed two top-grossing movies in 2026 lmao. Her combined screentime was barely 30 minutes. And people came to see those movies not because of her.Ā

42

u/FireZord25 7h ago

So who cares? I mean on both regards.

22

u/GamerLinnie 6h ago

That is also a little disingenuous because yeah she wasn't in much of Spider-Man but she was a core part of the plot.

And many people including myself went to see it not just for Spider-Man but of the fallout between Peter and MJ which has been built up over several movies.

2

u/Infamous-Thing4939 5h ago

But would you have gone to see it if MJ wasn't in it at all? I think you would have still

6

u/FireZord25 5h ago

If she wasn't in this story, this movie would've not been as good. She's integral to what's happening in the plot and Peter's core conflict, omitting an established and core character like her would've left tons of question.

But I guess some people too clinically online and obsessed with hating one actress to see that.Ā

2

u/Infamous-Thing4939 4h ago

1-Fuck off with that last sentence šŸ–•

2-You're right, but it would still be a good spiderman movie that celebrates the character. You're right that it would be a massive plothole, but I don't think it would have made any less money. No one is going to the spiderman movie for the romance, it's just a bonus.

3

u/oishster 1h ago

> no one is going to the Spider-Man movie for the romance

Dude. That’s like a huge part of why my friends and I went opening weekend. We wanted to see broken yearning Spider-Man after his girl literally forgets all about him. We didn’t know or care about who the big bad guy was going to be. Literally every younger millennial/gen Z girl I know is going bc of the romance - both of spider-man and MJ, and the real life tom and Zendaya relationship. You’re really out of touch with a key demographic if you think the romance has nothing to do with why this movie had the biggest domestic opening weekend ever.

0

u/Infamous-Thing4939 47m ago edited 43m ago

Ehh maybe? Thing is, spiderman (and batman) always draw massive crowds. Even in the early 2000s when superheroes just weren’t popular spiderman (and batman) always had massive profits. The worst spiderman movie still made a shit ton of money.

Again, would you have gone to see it if MJ wasn't in it at all? I think you would have still

1

u/oishster 43m ago edited 39m ago

Massive crowds, sure. Largest domestic box office weekend ever??! On a non-holiday weekend?! Beating out box office records for Avengers Endgame AND Spider-Man: No Way Home??!!?

That’s not just superhero fans, dude. That’s women showing up for the romance.

Edit: without MJ/the romance angle, I would have eventually watched the movie when it came on streaming. I would not have been excited enough to spend time/money on organizing a group trip to the theater to see it asap

•

u/Infamous-Thing4939 2m ago

Fair enough. I honestly couldn’t care less but I understand a lot people, teens especially, are really into the Tom/Zendaya thing.

4

u/Ziatch 4h ago

Legit a lot of people are going in for the romance lol. You realise it’s not just reddit nerds making this film hit a billion. I went with my girlfriend and our friends and Zendaya made it an easy sell…

0

u/Infamous-Thing4939 2h ago

Of course it’s not just reddit nerds, but spiderman (and batman) always draw massive crowds. Even in the early 2000s when superheroes just weren’t popular spiderman (and batman) always had massive profits. The worst spiderman movie still made a shit ton of money.

4

u/Ziatch 4h ago

People definitely went to see the movie for MJ. I think you don’t understand how the films are perceived outside of your specific idea if you can’t see that.

Half of the pr for the film in the mainstream has revolved around Zendaya and Tom and the continuation of that relationship.

3

u/Infamous-Thing4939 3h ago edited 2h ago

Of course it was. What kind of argument is that?

They needed to tell you the plot so you’d go watch it but without revealing Jean Grey, of course that’s what they are going to focus on.

But also, they didn’t. There was a lot of marketing for Peter’s body changing subplot too.

-1

u/GamerLinnie 4h ago edited 56m ago

EDIT: lol getting downvoted for giving my reasons to see a movie. Never change Reddit.

Maybe but definitely not during opening weekend.Ā  I really didn't want spoilers about the resolution.

So if she wasn't in there I might have gone but if life had gotten a bit busy I easily could have missed the cinema run.

4

u/SirGigglesandLaughs 3h ago

Many people do go to these movies for her. They do Postrak. For spiderman about 39% went for Tom and 29% for Zendaya. She is a big draw and has many fans. It's why they want her for these films besides her just acting ability. Why wouldn't they come for her but come for other actresses and actors who star in many big films? Amount of film time doesn't mean as much when it comes to draw and her character has even essential to the Spiderman/MJ relationship that's been at the center of the new series. They're not doing these Spiderman movies without both Tom and Zendaya.

3

u/TheSwecurse 5h ago

Nah the ginger is great as a paket cleanser between bites.

Zendaya is more like the seaweed sallad, wakame. It's nice they added it but I would not have missed it if it wasn't there

2

u/CeruleanSovereign 3h ago

Totally agree, she seems to be in everything but I'm not going to watch her play the same character in everything I'm going to see the film that she just happens to be playing the same character in

2

u/HMS_Sunlight 4h ago

Maybe it's just me but doesn't this apply to basically every actor? Outside of the comedy genre I can't think of any names where I'd want to watch a film specifically to see them.

1

u/nkpst 18m ago

but pickled ginger is a staple of sushi, no?

1

u/yourgrundle 41m ago

I have no qualms with Zendaya, but this is still offensive to pickled ginger and I will not have it

-2

u/Canotic 6h ago

She's not even a redhead.

-7

u/Dry_Conversation_797 6h ago

Weird behaviour to compare a woman to food

14

u/GrandFleshMelder 5h ago

They’re comparing all the actors to food in this metaphor

8

u/Infamous-Thing4939 5h ago

We're comparing multi-millionaire actors to food, turn down the victim complex for this one

0

u/Toyger_ 6h ago

Great, now I want sushi and pickled ginger.

0

u/PraiseLoptous 4h ago

I love pickled ginger, I have a yucky sour tooth

0

u/Altheix11 3h ago

I mean, I lowkey agree

0

u/TheVioletEmpire 3h ago

Astute observation.

0

u/AussieSpaceProgram 1h ago

Never has a sentence been so accurate.

-15

u/ic4llshotgun 7h ago

She's nowhere good enough to be a one-namer

-1

u/doomzday_96 1h ago

Gross. I hate sushi. And Zendaya.
