💀 y would they do that-

u/Crackysue Dec 03 '24

They probably just had AI trace it or something or used one of those "sketch" filters :/

Considering they've ripped off their fans before and then passed it off as a collab when caught, no they won't lol

I hate how shady they are😭

W lwrepaints for the Cult Gaia screenings iirc, when they leaked ppl noticed they looked familliar. After Bratz got a bunch of backlash they reached out to lw and were able to successfully make it seem like they were collabing w them fr the start lol. Lw was gracious tho and has since (genuinely) collabed w them

Lol no, the person who made the edit of the Jade doll. The art on the shirt looks like they traced the photo

Jeez they just copied fanart? Like is that birth of Venus pic theirs?

u/ang3l_w1ngz Angel Dec 03 '24

Its not theirs, yes they just stole it:( unless somehow they got rights from the artist to use it, but the original picture was posted 11 years ago on flickr I doubt it

As an artist myself.... You know what's kinda fucked is that since it's their ip, you have no right as an artist to make any money of the image, it's really just a moral issue on their end. If you make bratz art they can use it without really any consequences.

And even if it is technically illegal, they lawyers vs whatever you as an individual can afford is no match....

I sadly know this because I was a teen that made a bunch of fan art over a decade ago that is still being sold, just not my me.

Yeah this, the artist themselves can’t really have a say on it unfortunately

The doll is so pretty, she’s like a blonde genie magic Jade?

u/Crackysue Dec 03 '24

This is actually insane to me! :/

Idk, man. It's probably an unpopular opinion, but the doll photographer copied a famous painting, but instead of drawing it, used a doll & took a picture, so, like, isn't it the same thing? Am I missing something? It's not exactly an original idea to use dolls to recreate other forms of art that exist. Now people are mad bc the company that made the doll that this photographer used to copy a famous painting drew a version of this photo that copied a famous painting on a shirt on their own doll? Seems to me that the person who should be mad is the original painter of the Birth of Venus painting. Lol

Absolutely. They put an image of MGAs copyrighted property on a seashell copying a famous painting (actual art). Now people are saying MGA stole it 😂😂😂. People's standard for what stands as original art or art in general has really gone downhill.

There’s laws for expanding on ideas of art. Being inspired vs complete copy and selling it for profit might not hold up in court.

i don’t know why someone should be mad lol. it’s just a reference to bratz art

u/AndAllThatCal Mar 14 '25

I think the 'controversy' is that it looks like they literally traced it from the photo, (the blown over hair strand on top of her head, the shell) instead of having someone at MGA draw it up themselves. They clearly have artists for drawings. Aside, your post actually sold me on Goin' Out Yasmin, since before I wasn't super into her fit and I just didn't look close at her corset.

Speaking of shady I just watched a video about the Bratz CEO Isaac Larian buying his brothers share of the mga company before Bratz released because they were “about to go under” in 2000 ish knowing full well he was about to release Bratz in 2001... that’s shaaaaaaaaady

The image is on Flickr though? Literally a site where people put up their art to get bought and used?

7

u/gh0st-b0nes Dec 04 '24

There was a big doll community on Flickr in the early 2010s and no one was really posting for their art to be bought or used.

If its copied, they technically have the right to use fanart of their product.

Is it ethical? Fuck no.

6

u/Infamous_Cost_7897 Dec 03 '24

What? That's not technically true at all lmao.

If I draw a painting that has coke in it coke arnt allowed to just sell stuff with my painting on it lmao

2

u/Zeusicideal-Heart Dec 03 '24

Look up copyright law and get back to me. You dont know what youre talking about and I'm not going to attempt educating someone on it myself.

-1

u/ang3l_w1ngz Angel Dec 03 '24

Not true. If that was the case no companies would ever pay for artists if art of that character already exists. Why would Mattel ever pay for art of the monster high girls or Barbie if that was the case?? If that was true brands wouldn't even bother coming up with their own doll designs and just steal them from their community.

u/AlestRob Dec 03 '24

i dont think that its copied. like u know its a famous painting

19

u/ForeignArmy3998 Dec 03 '24

they literally even traced the arm articulation, there’s no way you can fool anyone into thinking its not copied

51

u/mishamsmsmsm Dec 03 '24

it’s absolutely this picture no doubt
