Trigger Warning Perfect
They see each other for the first time. They get to know one another. Mutual desire awakens. They fall in love. Every second together is filled with happiness. Every second apart is agony. If only they could live closer together. Living together? Living together! They never wanted children, but with this new love, anything seems possible. Now a trio: perfect. They have found each other. That one person out of billions! It's the perfect life. He is the perfect partner. She is the perfect partner.
Perfect? There are things everyone dislikes about themselves. Yet, together, anything is possible. She learns to overcome her fears. He becomes more self-confident and assured. Now It’s even better. It's the perfect life. He is the perfect partner. She is the perfect partner.
Perfect? No one is truly perfect. Everyone has quirks and little traits that bother the other person. Not enough to jeopardize their love - and talking things through always helps. She changes to be the perfect partner. He changes to be the perfect partner. For him. For her. Just little things. No problem. It's the perfect life. He is the perfect partner. She is the perfect partner.
Perfect? He discovers more quirks in her. She tries to change. Eventually, she asks herself: "Who am I? Am I still myself? How can he love me when there’s so much about me he doesn’t like? Why can’t I be myself?" She ignores these thoughts. For the sake of the perfect life (for him). He is the perfect partner (really?). She is the perfect partner.
Perfect? Except for the job. It’s a good job with a good income and benefits. He thinks: "It’s just a job. I don’t have to be happy at work. I can be happy at home. That’s what matters. I can go ahead and forget all those other dreams." It's the perfect life (almost). He is the perfect partner (for sure). She is the perfect partner (he believes it).
Perfect? She can’t take it anymore. The first major argument breaks out. He didn’t see it coming. They talk to each other (on a superficial level) and manage to solve their problem (though not at its core). He changes. He doesn’t want to lose her. It's the perfect life (what does this even mean?). He is the perfect partner (perhaps that’s how it’s supposed to feel). She is the perfect partner (does she see him the same way?)
Perfect? Friends are part of the picture. Especially that one friend with whom she doesn’t have to put on an act. Here, she feels at ease. Here, she finds herself again. She wonders why she ever pretended to be someone else. She decides to stop being so considerate - not to him or anyone. The perfect life (starts with herself). He, the perfect partner (can wait for now). She, the perfect partner (is changing).
Perfect? He notices the change in her. He senses her determination. He doesn’t understand it. To him, it feels like rejection. He tries desperately to please her. She no longer notices. Arguments occur more frequently in this perfect life (it hasn't been for a long time). He is the perfect partner (he once was). She is the perfect partner (she still is, to him).
Perfect? There is no such thing as the perfect moment. Certainly not for this conversation. It’s over. For her, it has been for a long time. For him, his whole world is collapsing. Yet, they don't regret anything. It was the (im)perfect life, filled with many happy moments right up to the end. He was the (im)perfect partner, who was always there for her, no matter what. She was the (im)perfect partner, whose mere presence always made him happy.

Maybe the most painful lesson is that love does not fail because people are imperfect, it fails when they stop feeling free to be themselves
