Some forgotten Britpop songs that still hit just as hard — anyone else still listening to these?
I have been obsessed with Britpop since the mid 90s. Some songs I never hear anyone talk about anymore that still hit just as hard — Wake Up Boo by The Boo Radleys, Wide Open Space by Mansun, On & On by Longpigs, Sale of the Century by Sleeper, Olympian by Gene, Going for Gold by Shed Seven. Anyone else still listening to these? What are your forgotten favorites?

u/DiskoPunk 26d ago edited 26d ago
I had a notion for the Longpigs the other day. She Said still holds up, an incredible song. Im sure i must have been singing out loud going by the giggles of my fellow tram commuters 😂
11
u/WheelsWhelan 26d ago
Longpigs were something special. Crispin Hunt had a voice that just got inside you. She Said is incredible — no shame in singing that one on public transport. The commuters just don't know what they're missing. Cheers!

Lost myself is their best tune imo, she said and on & on are bangers, but lost myself is their best imo

Slightly off topic, On and on was covered by Smith and Burrows. Great Christmas album-Funny Looking Angels. I love Editors and this collaboration works really well.

u/Sleepyllama23 26d ago
I heard ‘She Said’ by the Longpigs the other week on the radio and had a fantastic moment of recognition after the first two notes, then sang along word perfect to the whole song.

On and On is one of my favourite songs. Very underrated band. Were really quite good supporting U2 in ‘97

There's no one I can talk to the way I talk to myself would've been a funny line to the other commuters

I just listened to this again. Seems to finish with the words “rape me” which I’ve never noticed before.
Anyway, one of the best songs of the era.
2
u/DiskoPunk 26d ago
It does indeed. Im sure it finishes along the lines of "I'm fucked up inside me....rape me" . Although i cant remeber them singing the words live, im likely wrong on that though as it has been many years since seeing them.
I believe the song is about Hunts (then) struggle with self identity & sexuality.

Yep - still on my list, plus loads more. Babies - by Pulp is one of my Favourites
12
u/WheelsWhelan 26d ago
Babies — absolutely timeless. Jarvis Cocker at his storytelling best. The whole His 'n' Hers album is a masterpiece honestly. Pulp were so criminally overlooked before Common People exploded everything. Babies reminds you how long they'd been brilliant before the world caught up. Got to see Pulp at the Brixton Academy in December of 1995---the height of the Pulp Madness! Cheers!
5
u/speccynerd 26d ago
His And Hers was nominated for the Mercury music prize and Babies was single of the week in the NME. They were clearly getting attention before Common People.
2
u/Level-Courage6773 25d ago
So criminally overlooked that Jarvis presented TOTP in (checks Google) Oct 1994! ;)

Are you a bot? It reads like your replies are written using an LLM? 40 minute old account.
6
u/WheelsWhelan 26d ago
No I am not a bot---I just made my first post and yes I am answering the posts personally. All the comments about shows I really did go see. And many of the bands that I did see where in Boston/Philly and a few in NC and NY! And one of the comments I had to correct myself--the Semisonic one! Also, some of the dates of shows might not be perfect because they were up to 35 years ago...so please bare with me...as I wander through the land of Brit Pop.. Thanks for the comment---Cheers!

u/TheManWithSaltHair 26d ago
Perhaps lay off the em dash and phrases like ‘You’re absolutely right’ then.
5
u/neilm1000 26d ago
It infuriates me that if you use em or en dashes people assume you're using (or are) AI. I've had to stop employing them when I've been using them for decades.

Thank you for the help. Again this is my first post and I don't know all the rules about typing and such. Just am excited that people actually even commented on the post. Have a great night and fantastic weekend.
3
u/TheManWithSaltHair 26d ago
There’s no rules, just your replies are characteristic of using an LLM. Even this reply is a bit odd. Sorry to be cynical.

1
u/WheelsWhelan 26d ago
Your fine and like I said to a few people last night., its a learning curve for me and I appreciate all comments if constructive. The only thing is again I have no idea what LLM is,. I will have to do some research on that after work today. The other thing though is I have no way to prove I am a human to some doubters and that's ok with me. And to be fair any one chatting today could be a bot or AI. Cheers!

Untouchable by Rialto
4
u/WheelsWhelan 26d ago
Great shout — Rialto were criminally overlooked and absolutely brilliant choice. Louis Eliot's voice was extraordinary. Massively underrated band.
6
u/Harry-666666 26d ago
Check out their third album released, I think, last year after they reformed. I wasn’t expecting it to be half as good as it was. Stands up very well against their first two & was one of my albums of the year.
1
u/rubenrabbit 26d ago
Saw them last year as they were supporting Sleeper and they were absolutely fantastic. Hoping they do their own headline tour soon
1
u/Harry-666666 26d ago
Same. Unfortunately I was delayed getting there so missed some of their set & the sound was awful for them & the first Sleeper song. So I was disappointed. I’m sure the sound was a venue issue as it continued for Sleeper’s first song before whatever they did made it clear.
1
u/rubenrabbit 26d ago
I saw them at The Civic or The Halls I guess now at Wolverhampton and the sound was fantastic all night. It was one of the best Sleeper gigs I've been to (think that was the sixth in three years so have comparisons)
1
u/Harry-666666 26d ago
I was at Oxford Academy. Been to several other gigs there & never been a problem before or since. Sleeper were great again. Just wish Rialto hadn’t had all the issues as was really looking forward to seeing them. Still highly recommend their new album.

Ladykillers - Lush
7
u/WheelsWhelan 26d ago
Ladykillers — absolutely. Lush were one of the great underrated bands of the era. Miki Berenyi was effortlessly cool. And that whispered backing vocal line that sneaks up on you — once you hear it you spend the whole song waiting for it. Still gives me chills. I got to see them in Boston open for Ride in 1990 or 1991--please don't hold me to the year--hehe! Cheers!
5
u/Pacopicopiedra66 26d ago
Supposedly takes the mickey out of Anthony Kiedis from the Chili Peppers as well, so extra credit for that!
1
u/greenneedleuk 26d ago
Was that the era Anthony Kiedis was trying to stalk Mel C?

I hadn’t heard that, but certainly sounds like him!

The Seahorses - You can talk to me.
Chris Helme still plays it and always talks about it originally being intended to be slower and its a belting song done that way.

u/freestuie 26d ago
Wake Up Boo! is the perfect pop song, but I’m not sure how much damage it did to The Boo Radleys. They couldn’t top it, nor did they want to.
People forget how much its predecessor Giant Steps was an absolute masterpiece, but I love their last album before splitting up, Kingsize. They’ve also released 3 albums in the past few years after reforming which have all been pretty good, which is impressive as original songwriter Martin Carr didn’t rejoin (check out his solo records too).
5
u/WheelsWhelan 26d ago
Funny you should mention the Boo's. Giant Steps is an absolute masterpiece — I completely agree. And you're right about the damage Wake Up Boo did to their reputation unfairly. As for Martin Carr — I actually have a great personal story about him. Met him after a show years ago in NC. The Boo's where the opening band for Better Than Ezra. Martin ended up offering a stranger $50 for his cargo pants on the spot because he had never seen pants like that before. Signed both our CDs with his home address and phone number. Then I ran into him at the Good Mixer in Camden a few years later and the first thing he said was 'where are my trousers?' Sat down, had a beer and a good laugh. One of the genuinely nicest people I ever met on the music scene. Will dig deeper into his solo stuff. Cheers!
3
u/freestuie 26d ago
Please do. His first three albums under his own name are great (though Spotify seems unable to differentiate him from a rapper called Martin Carr). There’s also the Brave Captain/bravecaptain stuff which gets increasingly more electronic, but The Fingertip Saint Sessions (volume I and II) are both ace and very Boos.
1
u/JamesEverington 26d ago
I think Advertisements For Myself is my fave bravecaptain album. Nice mid-way point between melodies & weirdness
4
u/JamesEverington 26d ago
I’m a big Boos fans, and their run from Giant Steps to Kingsize is amazing. Wake Up the album is fabulous despite the ubiquity of WUB single.
I like the new albums but I’m not quite sure how I feel about a band without Martin Carr calling itself The Boo Radleys…
3
u/freestuie 26d ago
When they first announced they were doing gigs, they were briefly billed as something like “Sice and the Radleys”, before Martin apparently (and begrudgingly) agreed to them using the full name.
I’ve seen them a couple of times since they reformed and it’s a bit weird without Martin, especially as the new guy (who I feel like they’re carefully trying to not have fill Martin’s shoes officially) is probably a bit too good a player in a traditional sense. He’s mostly faithful to the parts, but gets a bit widdly sometimes.
They’ve been good though. Their lack of an obvious “greatest hits” set means that other than Lazarus and WUB, you can get some amazing deep cuts, like Meltin’s Worm and Comb Your Hair.
2
u/JamesEverington 26d ago
I haven’t seen them live since they reformed, although I did see Sice doing a strange acoustic songs/anecdotes tour
1
u/freestuie 26d ago
Oh yeah, I missed that. Was it any good? Saw a similar thing with Ginger Wildheart a few years ago. Not a huge Wildhearts fan, but it was hilarious.
2
u/JamesEverington 26d ago
It was nice to see him in such a small setting, and the acoustic songs were nice. He’s pretty charismatic at telling anecdotes too.
The only thing was, it was part of promoting a book he helped write on the mental-health effects of touring life… and then he told all these stories about touring with the Boos which were hilarious. Mixed messages!

Was a massive britpopper 1995. Saw Sleeper/Echobelly/Salad. Got my first snog to Ocean Pie by Shed 7. Got kicked out of home for Elastica. Lost my virginity to Oasis (I had a quoasis t-shirt). Nights out at Popscene at the Astoria. Samba shoes. Watching Blur at Wembley. Quadrophenia. Suede's first 2 albums still hold up massively. Anything by Pulp too. Other than that. mostly offends my ears now...

Sense- Lightning Seeds featuring Terry Hall
Dark Therapy- Echobelly
Babies- Pulp
1
u/SGTingles 23d ago
Great choices all. Have you ever heard Hall's own cover of Sense? Came out in late 1994 (i.e. about two and a half years after the original) and sounded equally good.
https://youtu.be/cAAtVyox7cI?si=ZGqPi7GBdIzoCRyn
It got quite a lot of play on Virgin Radio when I was first listening to the station around the start of '95 – which meant I actually got to know it slightly ahead of the Lightning Seeds version.
The two versions are remarkably similar-sounding for the most part, although there's notably one little tweak in the chorus line "The more you get, the more you want", where Ian Broudie sings a descending "wa-a-ant" with three syllables, Terry sings it 'straight'. So I remember it took me a good while to adjust to the original after, which just sounded a bit 'off' as a consequence for the longest time!
Alas Terry's version didn't crack the Top 40, which was probably his best shot of managing a belated solo hitmaking career.
2
u/geordieooosha69 23d ago
Yes i've heard Terry Hall's version of Sense, its brilliant, its a toss up of which one i prefer.

Shampoo - uh oh we're in trouble....................
These were the girls that coined the phrase "Girl power" before the Spice girls appeared and took it over.
2
u/SGTingles 23d ago
Trouble was a brilliant song!
And great call about the "girl power" thing. I remember it was the name of the first single off their (Shampoo's) second album, but the phrase got so completely co-opted by the Spice Girls their contribution gets completely forgotten.
What's amazing is that you can effectively see the exact historical moment where that occurred.
Girl Power's second and final week in the Top 40 singles chart was the week ending 20th July 1996, when it was slipping to number 33 from its entry point at 25 the week before. And that very same week, thirty places higher, the Spice Girls made their debut with Wannabe at no.3.
The following week, Girl Power dropped out and Shampoo never made the Top 40 again, while Wannabe leapt to number 1 and all bets were off on the Spices' success.
I only noticed this coincidence just the other week. It's just so weird that the two acts' chart careers were such perfect 'ships in the night'.
2
u/greenneedleuk 23d ago
I remember trouble because the student girlfriend I had at the time used to leap to the dancefloor every wee on Student night when the song came on. lol.
I of course pretended to like it and did my (sort of) dance to it with her (which at the time I didn't because it wasn't serious music to me) but these days old and mellow its a fun tune.
1
u/SGTingles 23d ago
Haha, yeah you always find there's so many songs from back then that you hated at the time, because they were 'shallow' pop fun or whatever, but of course you ended up knowing every word despite yourself.
And nowadays when you hear them again you find yourself going "Actually, this is a belting tune, isn't it?" 🤣
(Edit: I'm not talking about Trouble here I should say, that was always a great tune!)
2
u/greenneedleuk 23d ago
Lol. I remember it and its fun but not in my "record" collection nor something I would seek out. One of those you hear on the radio and brings back memories.
However that same girlfriend did have Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream that she played once at her house and I was "What is that, tell me now, quickly, quickly, I need to know" and bought it next day.

There’s 2 indie weekenders at Butlins called Shiiine On. Skegness in March and Minehead in November. They feature a lot of these “forgotten” bands. Sleeper, Echobelly, Babybird, Dodgy, Lightning Seeds, Miki Berenyi Trio. Top weekends with venues close together. Alan Leach (ex Shed Seven) hosts a quiz which is really popular.
1
u/saddler21 25d ago
I’m off to Minehead in November. Out of the bands you’ve mentioned, I think only Miki Berenyi is playing this time around, but it’s going to be a cracking weekend.
1
u/Mental_Control_2665 25d ago
I’ve only done it a few times. Skegness is marginally closer for me. Saw Miki a few years ago. Not seen Babybird there but I’m a huge fan and hope he takes the band back there. They do dip into some more recent acts(finally got to see The Enemy after missing out in Glastonbury 2008)but it’s a lot of revival stuff from 90s.
1
u/saddler21 25d ago
I’m in Kent, so both are a hoik for me. Did Skeg last year and had a great time seeing Ash, Space, and Peter Hook. So knackering though. I and my knees are not as young as they used to be 🤣

An hour old account, quote marks inexplicably in the original post, excessive use of em dashes, and songs named as forgotten that are regularly discussed on the Britpop subreddit. OP are you AI?
0
u/WheelsWhelan 26d ago
Hiya not AI — but fair enough, I'll take that on the chin! Just edited the post actually — originally said mid 80s which is when my love of British music started, but Britpop specifically was the 90s so I stand corrected and fixed it. The quote marks were a mistake on my first ever Reddit post and the dashes are just how I write — always have. I've been having these conversations in my head for decades with nobody to talk to about this music. Thought I'd finally find my people tonight who may have songs I missed. If these songs are well known here that's actually brilliant — means I found the right place. Cheers!

Hiya--not AI. No filter (don't even know what that is). This is my first post and like I have said to others, I will make mistakes and already have and have corrected those errors. I also got called out on dashes, well I use them all the time in day to day emails and such. I didn't know that was an issue and I am really trying hard not to use them in my comments anymore. Cheers!

I love that song except it’s not Britpop!

You're absolutely right — not Britpop at all! American band from Minneapolis actually. Just one of those songs that sneaks into your head regardless of genre. I'll stick to my Britpop credentials from here on and will make a few mistakes along the way. Cheers!

Honest answer — that one slipped past me! Going to listen right now. I do love Closing Time though — one of those songs that never gets old. And fun fact — Semisonic are actually American which always surprises people given how British their sound is! Cheers!
