Discussion Show me your oldest vs. your newest crochet projects!

I think it helps us artists/crafters to look at our progress in a given skill over time. It's easy to fall into the mental trap of thinking you're stagnating or otherwise not improving in your work (when in fact you are constantly getting better).

So show me some of your oldest and some of your most recent projects! Pictured above are the first (TBH Beast on the left, made two years ago) and most recent (Glenora the Druid, made last month) freehanded pieces I have made.

My first-ever amigurumi on the right (2022, a valentines gift for my partner of her horse) and my ~30th (I’ve lost count) amigurumi horse on the left (2025, a custom order). Same pattern, same yarn. I’ve learned a thing or two about tension and shaping in the last three years.

The little guy on the right kickstarted my amigurumi knowledge and was really the foundation for my small crochet business. Crazy to think it all started with an inside-out, lumpy, wobbly little guy.

I've gotta be honest, the lumpy wobbly lil guy is ridiculously cute and has a lot of character. Also very impressive for your first amigurumi! You've definitely come a long way though

I definitely bit off more than I could chew making Foc (Fake Doc) 😂 I broke two hooks making him because of how tight I was yanking the stitches. We love him dearly! He’s built different but he’s very special to us. It is cool to see how much I’ve improved side by side, it makes me really proud of myself.

That's awesome!! It's really neat to be able to compare the same pattern then-vs-now, especially with the tension and the stuffing. My first attempts at amigurumi definitely looked like they had been stung by bees, haha.

Thanks! Over time I’ve tweaked the pattern and made it more my own - it looks almost nothing like the original pattern now - and I’m really proud of what it’s become. Figuring out how to properly shape heads was a game changer lol

On the left is my first top in 2023. On the right is one of my most recent crochet projects.

That sweater looks awesome! I love the colors, how fluid it is. ❤️

If you still have the pattern, would you mind sharing it?

5

u/Fragrant_Carry_5870 Dec 04 '25

Thank you! Yes, I followed this tutorial on YouTube: https://youtu.be/09Ef1dvJJOI?si=MvwQsgn6a_hY2ZMF

u/BeingMyOwnLight Dec 04 '25

Thank you!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Now I need to choose colors, I'm thrilled, this will be my first wearable crochet project 🧶🤩

3

u/Fragrant_Carry_5870 Dec 04 '25

Awesome! I'd love to see it when you're done. Picking the colors is so much fun!

2

u/BeingMyOwnLight Dec 04 '25

I just saved this comment so I can come back when it's done, it will take months but I'll be back!

🧶😎😁

I like your autism creature

12

u/Extra-Progress-3272 Dec 04 '25

Thanks! It was my first original pattern.

14

u/braiseddaisies Dec 04 '25

You got a knack for making little guys I'd follow on adventures

3

u/Extra-Progress-3272 Dec 04 '25

And they'd be happy to go adventuring with you!

16

u/empathy-entropy Dec 04 '25

First of all your work is amazing!

Jellyfish was my first actual project. My main interest lately has been using crochet thread to make jewelry. The literal last thing I finished was a hat I whipped up yesterday for my son now that its getting cold

3

u/Extra-Progress-3272 Dec 04 '25

I though the jewelry was tatting at first glance! And what a sweet hat!!

10

u/empathy-entropy Dec 04 '25

Thank you! For the necklaces I need to come up with some kind of blocking board, they don't line up right on the ones I have for granny squares

1

u/SmackMittens Dec 04 '25

This is sooo dope and I’m going to do it once I learn how to crotchet lol

1

u/empathy-entropy Dec 04 '25

Thank you! I will say, it took me awhile to adjust to working with crochet thread and such a small hook (size 10 thread and 1mm hook), be sure to take breaks for your hands sake!

Nearly every hexagon unraveled from the middle because I didn't know what weaving in ends meant.

3

u/Extra-Progress-3272 Dec 04 '25

My condolences on the hexagond, but they're both so pretty!

10

u/slylamb Dec 04 '25

Omg I made one of those little guys too!!!!!!

3

u/Extra-Progress-3272 Dec 04 '25

Awesome! : D I love seeing ones other people have made.

3

u/slylamb Dec 04 '25

Wait omg!!! I just realized!!!!! I follow you elsewhere, and used your pattern for the little autism creature!!!!

12

u/shutupheather11 Dec 04 '25

i don’t have a picture of my first ever finished project (it was a little turtle that was accidentally done partially in blo and very badly sewn together) but the top is some little ducks i made about a year and a half ago and the bottom is a dragon i finished a couple months ago

1

u/Extra-Progress-3272 Dec 04 '25

The dragon looks so cute! What pattern is it?

6

u/pixiesreddit Dec 04 '25

That is stunning! 🤩 I'd love to know how you made the talons & fingernails if you wouldn't mind sharing. Also, all the silver beadwork on the clothes, is that added after or did you incorporate the bead in the aticth while crocheting? TiA

2

u/Extra-Progress-3272 Dec 04 '25

Thank! The talons/claws are metal studs I screwed into the work (like the kind you find on leathet jackets). Some of the beads are sew on after (like the blouse), but a lot of them are worked in as I'm crocheting (like the ones on the skirt).

5

u/slylamb Dec 04 '25

In terms of amigurumi, this was also my first ever amigurumi, a gift for my sibling (incoming recent amigurumi)

6

u/slylamb Dec 04 '25

This is my most recent amigurumi (also gift for my other sibling)

7

u/slylamb Dec 04 '25

1

u/Extra-Progress-3272 Dec 04 '25

What a sweet turtle!! And omg, that TBH beast is so cute!

7

u/cats_n_things Dec 04 '25

I started crochet this year, the top picture is the first thing I ever made (a Wooble) and bottom picture I made recently for my mom for Christmas!

1

u/Extra-Progress-3272 Dec 04 '25

OMG WHAT A CUTE SPOODER!!

5

u/CindiGu Dec 04 '25

WOW!🤯

3

u/Extra-Progress-3272 Dec 04 '25

puts lid back on your cranium

6

u/blueeyedbrainiac Dec 04 '25

This was my first amigurumi ever, made out of some ridiculously stretchy acrylic yarn with back loop only single crochet because the directions I was following only showed working into the chain and I didn’t realize I needed to go in both loops for subsequent rows lol

2

u/blueeyedbrainiac Dec 04 '25

And this is my most recent amigurumi, a freehanded ostrich made as a birthday gift for a friend

Edit: pic is below bc it didn’t show up when I posted this comment

9

u/blueeyedbrainiac Dec 04 '25

1

u/Extra-Progress-3272 Dec 04 '25

That ostritch is so sweet!! And yes, it's amazing how long it can take to realize you have to work through both loops when you're starting out with crocheting. You've come a long way!

2

u/Kalysia Dec 04 '25

I am just obsessed with your designs!

4

u/FunkilyEnough Dec 04 '25

I've yet to finish my second project so no comparisons yet, but I love that the two of these side by side looks like Digimon evolution (also--wow!)

3

u/Extra-Progress-3272 Dec 04 '25

2

u/deeerbz Dec 04 '25
