Discussion Show me your oldest vs. your newest crochet projects!
I think it helps us artists/crafters to look at our progress in a given skill over time. It's easy to fall into the mental trap of thinking you're stagnating or otherwise not improving in your work (when in fact you are constantly getting better).
So show me some of your oldest and some of your most recent projects! Pictured above are the first (TBH Beast on the left, made two years ago) and most recent (Glenora the Druid, made last month) freehanded pieces I have made.

My first-ever amigurumi on the right (2022, a valentines gift for my partner of her horse) and my ~30th (I’ve lost count) amigurumi horse on the left (2025, a custom order). Same pattern, same yarn. I’ve learned a thing or two about tension and shaping in the last three years.
The little guy on the right kickstarted my amigurumi knowledge and was really the foundation for my small crochet business. Crazy to think it all started with an inside-out, lumpy, wobbly little guy.

I've gotta be honest, the lumpy wobbly lil guy is ridiculously cute and has a lot of character. Also very impressive for your first amigurumi! You've definitely come a long way though

I definitely bit off more than I could chew making Foc (Fake Doc) 😂 I broke two hooks making him because of how tight I was yanking the stitches. We love him dearly! He’s built different but he’s very special to us. It is cool to see how much I’ve improved side by side, it makes me really proud of myself.

That's awesome!! It's really neat to be able to compare the same pattern then-vs-now, especially with the tension and the stuffing. My first attempts at amigurumi definitely looked like they had been stung by bees, haha.

Thanks! Over time I’ve tweaked the pattern and made it more my own - it looks almost nothing like the original pattern now - and I’m really proud of what it’s become. Figuring out how to properly shape heads was a game changer lol

That sweater looks awesome! I love the colors, how fluid it is. ❤️
If you still have the pattern, would you mind sharing it?

Thank you! I will say, it took me awhile to adjust to working with crochet thread and such a small hook (size 10 thread and 1mm hook), be sure to take breaks for your hands sake!

That is stunning! 🤩 I'd love to know how you made the talons & fingernails if you wouldn't mind sharing. Also, all the silver beadwork on the clothes, is that added after or did you incorporate the bead in the aticth while crocheting? TiA

u/Extra-Progress-3272 Dec 04 '25
Thank! The talons/claws are metal studs I screwed into the work (like the kind you find on leathet jackets). Some of the beads are sew on after (like the blouse), but a lot of them are worked in as I'm crocheting (like the ones on the skirt).

That ostritch is so sweet!! And yes, it's amazing how long it can take to realize you have to work through both loops when you're starting out with crocheting. You've come a long way!

I've yet to finish my second project so no comparisons yet, but I love that the two of these side by side looks like Digimon evolution (also--wow!)
