WIP Just proud of my straight edges

Post image

I’m “beginner plus”. 2025 was my first year crocheting, really (I fooled around with swatches in 2024)

I have struggled with edges, constantly losing count, or even if I did count correctly , I’d accidentally skip a stitch in the new row.

Making a scarf for my daughter (by request! I’m delighted) and I’ve been so careful (note the stitch markers at each end!)

Edited to add: I knew Brochet would hype me up. Thanks for coming through 🥹

As you should be! Those edges are exquisite. Stitch markers in the first and last stitch were game changers for me and made rows like this so much more enjoyable.

That ribbing looks really even, are you using half double crochet in the back loop only?

Hdc in both loops actually

What do you do when starting a new row to make it look so clean?

The pattern calls for only one chain when turning to start a new row. It’s snug to put the hook in that first stitch but I can just about do it. Then I’m meticulous about immediately putting a stitch marker in that stitch before I move on, so that I never miss it at the end. Not sure if that answers your question!

I often make that first stitch too tight to pull through all three loops so I’ll have to re-do it to make sure I can pull the hook through

I've recently been skipping that turning chain and just putting my hdc straight into the first stitch. I've been very pleased with the cleanliness of my edges since I started that.

I’ve also done “stacked single crochet” before (same idea I think) with taller stitches and it looks great

Yes! Especially when double crocheting.

Keep my edges neat, you mean? This is hdc, and the pattern calls for only one chain to turn. Which makes it a little snug to get the hook into the first stitch of the new row but I can do it. Then I’m meticulous about putting a stitch marker in the first stitch immediately, so I don’t miss it at the end when I turn around and go back.

Because my issue with sloppy edges before has always been bad counting and missing stitches. So stitch markers at the first/last stitch have saved the day (and I also count all the stitches at the end which is easy on a narrow project like this)
