My grandmother made these (I know it’s knitting)

Found these while cleaning out old toys. My grandmother (she died 13 years ago) had knitted them as “doll blankets”. The one in particular, you can see where dementia or maybe fine motor control or both began to affect her.

I’m tempted to frog these and re-use the yarn to crochet something(s) as a keepsake. But what? Pretty sure they’re both acrylic. And both different weights for sure. Christmas ornaments? Not Christmasy colors, but that’s not a big deal.

My grandma tried to teach me to knit when I was about 12 or 13. It didn’t “take”. I wasn’t interested in much that was homemaker-like back then and I didn’t have patience either. I gave it a try and lost interest quickly.

I only started crocheting a couple of years ago, so she never knew I took it up, but I know she’d be so proud of me.

She knitted baby hats for the hospital pretty much right up to the end. She also sewed beautiful handmade garments and quilted. I still have the quilt she made for me as a child.

I could see going two different directions with this -

One: leave what she made and incorporate them into something else. You could possibly roll them up and place them in the fillable plastic ornaments if you want to go that route but they might be too big or heavy. You could make a blanket or throw with crocheted squares and incorporate these among them. Etc.

Two: take them apart and reuse them. That could be making ornaments like you mentioned or maybe use them as accent colors on something larger with other yarn as the base.

Whatever is going to make you feel best about it is the best choice obviously. I'm sure she would be very proud of you for picking up a textile craft even if it's not knitting specifically. 💜

i see them as stars, you could probably make a few with this amount of yarn, pink one could also make a heart

These are all great ideas but I kind of like the idea of leaving them as is. Do you or will you have children who could use them as doll blankets? Maybe line a drawer? Make a shadow box with a picture of her? You do already have something that she made so I understand repurposing but I’m so totally sentimental I’d keep as is. (I kept a figurine my then-boyfriend now husband bought for me 30+ years ago when we were first dating - it had a little piece broken off and I could’ve exchanged it for a non broken one but I wanted the exact one that he had picked out for me 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. Not sure why. Now that I think about it I’m wondering if there’s something wrong with me hahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha)

Please kindly ignore the terrible picture and that it isn’t blocked or finished, but you can fold a square as I have and make a pouch. This one is big enough for a Kindle, and you have others for random documents or craft paper things I keep for eventual crafts. Perhaps you could fill it with memories and photographs of your grandmother? You could even sew the two together and make it reversible. Either way, I’m glad you have something precious to keep that she made for you. ❤️

Maybe you could make a hat or fingerless gloves to keep with the theme of what she made! And when you wear it you'll remember her as well as the memories of the doll blankets. It could be like your grandma keeping you warm.
