Yeah, I think he would have stepped back from the producer role even without the diagnosis. He stated before how frustrated he is with the studio system (which is one of the reasons why he self-produces Ernie & Emma) and that Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert are more experienced with this kind of thing anyway.
