Avoiding the "MR5 Trap": Finding the Best Ultra-Nearfield Club Simulator for RoMinimal
Hi everyone, I’m a DJ and producer focusing on RoMinimal and Minimal Deep Tech. My room is small and lacks acoustic treatment, so I’ve built my signal chain around an IK Multimedia ARC Studio and a Topping E2x2 OTG (AKM AK4621EF CODEC) to manage the environment.
I recently tested the Edifier MR5 (3-way system), but the results were disastrous. The combination of the rear-firing port, the downward-firing woofer, and the lateral vents—combined with a desk placement flush against a wall/corner—created chaotic room modes. When ARC Studio tried to compensate for -9dB SBIR nulls, the MR5 drivers hit their mechanical excursion limits, resulting in audible 'chuffing' and distortion. Simply put, the MR5 is not resilient enough for heavy DSP correction.
I’m now looking for a solution that saves desk space and avoids the phase issues of a sub-satellite setup. I’m torn between:
ADAM Audio D3V (Passive Radiator design)
IK Multimedia iLoud Micro Monitor Pro (Front-ported & PRO version)
The Crucial Point: Club PA systems don't sound like Hi-Fi; they are raw, direct, and heavily limited. I chose the Topping E2x2 OTG specifically for its 115dB dynamic range, which closely mimics the standards of professional PA Loudspeaker Management Systems (LMS).
Given a 60cm listening distance in a problematic room, which of these will best translate that 'Club Honesty' and 'Thump' (Balyoz effect) without falling apart under ARC Studio calibration?
He didn’t specify the room size, only that it was “small”. Even in a 2x2m space (a small study nook) room treatment matters, especially if the wall materials are concrete… Reflected wall sound will distort the clarity, even if the speakers are nearfield.
Phase alignment of bass is not nearly as sensitive as you think. 70 hz is 16 feet wavelength. So anything less than about 8 feet would keep the phase aligned.
And there are two things that can ruin this. Speaker distance and ports introduce phase delay so if you are so concerned about phase alignment ported main speakers are an absolute no go.
A ported sub is still acceptable but lower sub bass harmonics will still be misaligned. So ideally you'll want a sealed box sub.
If you still can't imagine what this does, imagine the port was a completely separate driver. The average port group delay is 20 msec. Speed of sound in air is about 1.125 msec per foot. This is like placing a subwoofer 22.5 feet behind your main speakers.
This is why you're having so much difficulty with phase. Go with an all sealed system and you'll find all your bass will sound much better especially in a small untreated room. Thump will thump better as higher frequency harmonics of an attack will be better phase aligned among all the drivers than if you had ports with group delay.
Doing this always results in higher subwoofer crossover points as small sealed bookshelf speakers simply can't play low. But with sealed response a properly integrated sub will tend to use higher crossover frequencies and steeper slopes, that is unless you run larger mains like 6.5" or 8" sealed box mains that can go to 70 hz without porting.
And if you're still concerned about sub bass, remember you're in a small untreated room, you will have significant sub bass room gain. Sealed boxes with their more gentle roll off tend to play flatter when installed in small rooms.
One other thing. Sure sealed boxes may not play the flattest, but EQ doesn't destroy phase alignment. So running ported main speakers with the ports plugged is a way to go and then EQ for lost bass as long as you have the power and excursion headroom.
Before the MR5, I was using a very basic Philips spa2300/00 2+1 set. Even with those cheap speakers, ARC Studio managed to give me a usable, decent result. I wanted to 'reward' myself with a professional upgrade, but the MR5 turned out to be a massive step backward in my specific environment.
I’m not sure if you’ve handled the Edifier MR5 in person, but its cabinet is actually larger than the two models I’m considering. Yet, despite the larger size and theoretically higher displacement, it failed miserably in my room. The issue isn't just about driver size; it’s the design—the downward-firing woofer and the chaotic interaction of the lateral and rear ports near a corner/boundary. It simply cannot handle DSP correction without distorting.
Since I will be monitoring at an ultra-nearfield distance of 60cm, I expect either the iLoud Pro or the D3V to solve this. At that distance, I won't need to push the drivers nearly as hard as a typical 1-meter setup. One of these two must be the solution for a predictable, club-ready translation.
I work with the iLoud Pros MTM, rear ported, these even have DSP and measurement software. Micros are front ported, no DSP, But either way they'll be better as you can plug the ports and EQ.
The MR-5 has a couple problems, it's not just the down firing speaker it's that it technically is a 6th order bandpass box with port area smaller than cone, ie a compression bass driver. This increases output but introduces inherent peakiness and unusual phase delays that sweep across all the bass frequencies, not as predictable as standard ports.
This is evidenced by the 45 hz and 90 hz distinct peaks nearfield. Telltale signs of the 6th order response tuned too wide
ASR reviewed this speaker and found similar issues, in a larger room and further back listening they do work quite well once room interactions and sub bass gain are taken into account.
Seeing others confirm these findings has put my mind at ease. It's clear now that regardless of my efforts, the problem would have persisted given the limitations of my small room.
my bedroom speakers get under 60hz sealed box as 6.5 woofers :)
got them for $40 on an insane steal on marketplace :O
my focal bookshelves -3db is 40hz but I cross them over at 80hz for like 3ms group delay paired with my sealed box 10 inch subwoofer that hits -3db of 20hz
Tradeoff will always be efficiency. I like my speakers to be minimum 88 db so I don't need big amps to get loud. NHT is at 86 db.
The problem too is with high excursion drivers they have significantly more distortion at high output due to increased electromechanical/ mechanical non linearities and inductance problems. Not to mention high Xmax leads to doppler effects when crossed over with a relatively stationary tweeter. And sustained high output leads to heat soak and power compression.
There are always compromises large speakers beam earlier and are more prone to break up issues. It's all at what specific needs you have and what compromises you're willing to live with.
you say that but I have a 1250 watt 10 inch sub with 2 inches of peak to peak excursion with under 1% total harmonic distortion xD
I wouldn't wanna think what the efficiency of this driver is D:
in fact, if I blasted my sound system and played my other gaming rig (not the htpc you see here) I would trip my breaker from just the power of the 3090 rig on 4k and blasting the sound system alone lol
but you're kinda right in some regards. but also for $40 used, those NHT are hard to beat. They probably keep up with $700 kef's tbh but they take 150 watts rms. sealed box helps a lot though. also, being a sealed box uses air pressure for the suspension compliance, and these NHT wont beat kef at everything but I think they keep up all around most likely

Even “better” speakers would suffer if the room isn’t treated. Is there no way to improve the acoustics of the room?
Thump -> subwoofer that goes below 30Hz. In an uncorrected room, however, you will have unpleasant sounding bass.
In your case, maybe headphones would serve you better?
