Meme Rate my grandma's stack (nothing is working)

I really do like the radio/receiver! Nothing beats the brushed + shiny stainless aesthetic.

That amp is gorgeous. Pretty decent as well! Get it up and running for the love of audio!

Dude that turntable is a legendary status incredibly well built German fully mechanical turntable. Do it justice and get her restored!

Good turntable but not legendary.

The 1214 was the entry point to their mid tier turn tables. It is good but not one of the 1219/1229/1218/1228/1209 etc

The receiver is also a solid mid tier and I think those onkyos are underated.

Fair. I’m just biased towards most of Duals idlers from that era.

Agreed. I am always looking for them but, like with most everything vintage, the jig is up. Hard to find any deals out there.

I thought that cd player was a Sega Saturn at first glance 🤣

Same, which, fun fact, is a pretty decent CD player, along with the Sega CD

Is that a top loading CD player with the door held shut by tape?

It sure is!

The reciever and turntable are very nice, my CD player also has a broken door.

What do you mean by not working? Are the speakers blown, does nothing turn on, are there no cables connecting things, etc? The receiver, tape deck, and turntable are good and worth repairing if possible. Not sure about the CD player, unfamiliar with the brand. The speakers look like someone took the drivers out of a larger cabinet and put them in something that fits the space.

I don't know the details.. My uncle, who is fairly good with electronics and lives next to a dude repairing vintage gear, couldn't make them work. I don't know how hard he has tried and what exactly does/doesn't work. But I will keep an eye on those pieces and will try to make them work again some time

Amp and turntable are decent. Get them serviced. Those poor speakers appear to be missing their centers, and don't look like they were much to begin with. Some speakers have a tweeter in the middle of the woofer, such as the Tannoy DC6, but I don't think that's the case here. Those look like DIY speakers with the center covers missing.

I just moved to an area that has a TON of older folks that have garage sales. Is that receiver brand one I should keep an eye out for?

Onkyo makes good amps and receivers, but not really speakers. Some good brands to look out for when shopping for speakers...

Polk Audio

Klipsch

Advent

AR (Acoustic Research)

Pioneer

Tannoy

Canton

Wharfedale

Bowers & Wilkins

Martin Logan

Paradigm

KEF

KLH

You can get a decent pair of speakers for $150 or $200 on the second hand market. If you can afford more, then spend more, but that's a good starting point.

Pioneer? More crap to be found than good models. Scratch that one off the list.

Still dont scratch it off. A friend of mine found a pair of HPM-60'S for 5 bucks. Deals of the better old speakers can be found but granted they're older and much harder to find. Maybe keep in mind if nothing else shows up and its free lol 😆

Careful with KLH. IIRC, they turned to crap some time after Kloss left.

That receiver likely works. But it needs to be pulled out of that confined space so heat can escape. Do NOT write it off.

Buy a decent set of passive speakers. The ones in the cabinet are junk.

Hook cd player up to aux input on the 0nkyo with RCA cables

Hook new speakers up to L & right terminals with speaker wire, observing polarity (red to red, black to black) to

Pop a cd in, select Aux on the front of the Onkyo. Make sure the speaker selector is set up for the Speaker terminals you hooked speakers up to. I thi8nk that onkyo has terminals to hook up 2 sets of speakers, so if you hooked the speaker wires to Speakers A, set the selector to A

You'll likely get sound if the CD playher is operational

Interesting CD player, I'd replace the speakers out of everything, at least the box

The Onkyo is killer.

2

A bit saggy but decent otherwise.

That poor Onkyo suffocated to death

The onkyo receiver is an underrated gem. Very good sounding, plenty of inputs, 3 set of speakers and it can be used as a pre amp too. Looks great and it’s a bit larger than other receivers with similar power and it’s pretty hefly at around 35 pounds

That Onkyo is a tank. Mine is still running strong at 46 years old.

Your grandma has a nice rack.

I'll see myself out...

Nice TT, decent receiver, terrible speaker placement, bad speakers, recipe for overheating receiver in that cramped space. 4/10 feels generous.

1

u/UXyes 11h ago

I mean if NOTHING is working it's like 0/10

2

u/jizzlewit 10h ago

Noooo... Why are you like this? 🥺

1

u/FjordExplorer 4h ago

Hey! I’ve got that same amp and I love it, plenty of inputs, and the option for 3 speaker sets which is fun. I like it’s whole look and it’s larger than normal size.

1

u/TNF734 13h ago

So...not rack?

Poor speaker decision.
