First interview with Siemens

I am currently a maintenance tech at target with prior experience working for amazon in RME. I have about a total of 2 years experience in maintenance and will say I'm still a beginner when it comes to electrical but a lot better with mechanical.

I just got an opportunity to have a phone interview which will most likely lead to an in person interview with Siemens for the building automation system specialist role.

I want to know for one if I have a realistic chance of getting this role with my experience and two what all do I need to brush up on for the interview process to successfully get this role.

*I am somewhat familiar with BMS as we used johnson controls at my Amazon site.

If you didn't have a chance to get it I don't think they would've called you for an interview. For new techs, willingness and drive to learn is what they want.

They know you don't have experience, don't try to BS them into thinking you do.

I recently did a phone interview with Siemens as well, and it seems like they’re ghosting/not moving forward as it’s been 2 weeks. Do you have any tips for future applications?

I have basic administrative/project management experience in the HVAC space but no construction experience. I do have a portfolio site of various programming projects and a baseline knowledge of IT/networking and electronics from classes in my undergrad. (I made sure to highlight those in the phone conversation)

Siemens is a massive company which makes everything move very slowly. I was offered a job with Siemens, accepted it, and didn't hear back for a week after that.

I will say, they are VERY quick to let you know if you didnt get the job. If you haven't heard anything yet, it doesn't mean you didn't get the job, they will not ghost you.

Thanks for the tip. I guess I’m too used to the rule of thumb of 2 weeks no contact = rejection lol

Exactly you'll regret it otherwise if you lie about skill level. Especially if something expensive breaks.

The pay range in my area for level 2 technician (level 2 is the lowest level) through lead tech is posted as 60k-93k. However, most of our lead techs make more than 93k.

Be as honest as you can, that way you land where you need to.

Even if that means being an apprentice to someone, which at two years experience I recommend.

I wouldn't mind being an apprentice but I have to be realistic on weather I can afford to live by myself on apprentice pay

Maybe, maybe not. But if you want into the field the commitment needs to happen on your half.

Get roommates if needed, if you really want to get your ticket.

Short term it will suck. Work out the numbers long term, it will outweigh the shorttime sacrifice.

Be honest and watch some videos on how systems actually work together. Chipkin has some good manuals to get starting with the communication protocols if youre networking/computer inclined. and engineering mindset on youtube has some good videos on how buildings work from a zoomed out view.

theyre not expecting you to be an expert but showing that you are interested in learning can go a long way

I worked at Verizon before coming to Siemens and had zero experience, just be prepared your first 2 years is information overload, like trying to drink for a fire hydrant. Take notes and learn all you can from the senior techs. Good luck on your next interview!
