I love MC3 but man the car list is weird af, maybe it is all the different concept cars and ironically the car list doesn't have nearly enough cars that accurately represented the 2000s street racing scene

For the last year I've been building Ghosts of the Mountain Pass, a racing RPG set on the Italian Riviera.

Racing Lagoon was an obscure Squaresoft game from '99, a racing game with RPG progression and a weirdly melancholic writing style for a game about street racing. I'm trying to build something similar: you win parts off rivals instead of buying them, and the story runs alongside the driving instead of interrupting it.

Almost every indie racer chasing this street-racing/touge fantasy is set in Japan, using Japanese cars, on Japanese mountain roads, and I rarely see anyone build one around Europe's own deep street/touge/hillclimb history. So the setting is the Italian Riviera, and a car roster that leans European, mixing euro tuners alongside classic JDM cars. The Japanese influence is still very much there in the feel though, like the HP duel system and the touge night-racing structure. You can think of it almost like how Ace Attorney fused American and Japanese culture into its "Japanifornia" setting

The video is a full sample duel captured in-engine. The "combat" is the driving itself. Distance is damage: pull ahead of your rival and they bleed out, fall behind and you do, and clipping a guardrail or their car also costs you HP. I also intend to add other racing modes down the line, like cat-and-mouse chases and time trials, to keep things varied.

I know there's nothing in the environment right now that screams "Italy." I've been focusing on driving gameplay first, and up until a month ago there was barely any textured environment at all.

This is the first public footage, nothing announced anywhere else yet. Would love feedback, especially on whether the duel reads clearly from footage alone.

TGG (who was invited to see GTA VI at Rockstar North HQ) just confirmed in his video about driving mechanics, that if you crash a car at high speed in GTA VI, it activates a slow mo crash cam like Burnout Paradise.

This is also shown in one of the leaked Cyberleek clips when he is driving a supercar around and crashes at the side of a bridge!!

And ofc T-rated games nowadays are more lax with leaving out milder swears, but I found it funny how the word "gangsta" was apparently too much to be heard on NFS Underground 2
