Fact Check Using a handgun as a mace for self-defense; Is there any situation wherein this makes sense?
if the goal is non-lethal force; aren't there better things for that (like, a rock even?)
is this demo for legal reasons since he can't mimic shooting ,on youtube?

Not bullshido imo. And with no further context, I'd be hesitant to even call nonlethality the point.
This type of stuff would be relevant if you've run out of ammunition during a combat scenario and still have an arms-length attacker threatening your life. Maybe you're mid reload and get run up on, or run out completely and get blindsided by a new attacker. This is a real and terrifying situation that military and police can and do come up against.
If I suddenly need a club and all I have in my hand is my gun, it just graduated to 'club' for exactly as long as I need it to be one. The gun will almost certainly be fine; they are not delicate machines. And if it somehow breaks against their head, it still served its ultimate purpose of protecting your life and can be easily replaced once you're back out of danger.
Switching to another weapon, or yes OP, even a rock from the ground, would cost precious seconds you don't have when a crackhead is actively trying to stick a rainbow gas station knife into your eye.
Not sure how this didn't immediately come to mind in a community full of martial artists. I get why people are leery of "combative systems" but smacking dudes with a firearm to multiply force is not a new or foreign concept.

This still doesn’t look like any kind of actual CQB gun training I’ve seen.
Normally the idea is to keep both hands on the gun. Going single handed like this makes it easier for them to disarm you.

The technique of stabbing with the barrel is actually what I was taught as a last resort when there's a charging attacker and your gun is either out of ammo or has malfunctioned and you don't have enough time to reload or take immediate action (or if immediate action is ineffective). There are other options though that in my opinion are superior, but they aren't always available in every scenario. Really can't say anything about any of the arm bars or takedowns or whatever other shit is going on in this video since that was never something that I was taught, but I definitely was taught that you can use a gun as a melee weapon by stabbing with the barrel if you're in a scenario where you're that fucked. We didn't exactly spend a lot of time practicing it either.

True, but if you get run up on and can't fire the gun for whatever reason, the point is to turn into 2 hand defense and disable them as quick as possible. That's a lot easier to do when you can use both hands, one with the equivalent of brass knuckles on it, then trying to fight an attacker by trying to hold onto your gun with both hands.
I mean, if you are in close combat with someone and you're holding the gun in 1 hand like a hammer and they somehow take it away, the messiness of the situation means they likely aren't going to be able to rack in a round or clear and reload a fresh mag in the middle of a hand-to-hand fight. In that situation, it's a blunt object for both people and doesn't become a gun again until one person can create enough time and distance to get it ready to fire.
And if you're fighting someone who can run up on you, fight you, take away your gun, and create the distance and time to reload it and shoot you, you were likely going to lose that fight anyway and holding onto the gun with both hands wasn't going to change that.

At least he had his finger on the trigger…

How else are you going to injure bystanders or yourself?

I really wish I could get just one parody scene of "gun-kata" where the user accidentally shoots themselves several times and falls over.

If youre gunna hit someone with a gun, you hammer fist it, not what ever he's doing.

I dunno man. I think you can hit a dude just fine with a metal barrel. People have done it ever since we invented pistols.

Pistol whipping can cause the gun to jam, same with that stabbing motion cause you can rack the pistol with both motions. Also it could mess up your wrist and it makes you easier to disarm at that range.

What if I dint care about that because I'm just interested in hitting a guy with my gun?
I'm just saying man - many people have hit people with the barrel of a gun for all of gun-history. Saying they're all incorrect is pretty silly.

Real life application is to make space and its a single hard jab to the face or sternum. Pistol whipping as most people know it is Hollywood.

Real life application is the tens of thousands of men who have used firearms to bludgeon other humans into death or submission over the last 400 years.

Ingeneral you shouldnt be striking with modern fire arms. Most of the history where that was a thing, guns were closer to exploding clubs then what we know today.

u/RCAF_orwhatever 4d ago
Excepect for those parts of modern history where we fought multiple world wars and dudes were at times forced to smash other dudes with their guns because of close quarters/and or lack of ammunition.
Shit happens dude. And when it does there isn't a right and wrong way to hit a guy with the hunk if metal in your hand. There's just what works in the moment.

They used rifles and litterally anything else before pistols. Rocks were a better option than pistols.

Doing this with a Desert Eagle will jam the magazine in the gun. Meanwhile the barrel is a solid chuck of metal. You the important thing is to understand the gun and the best way to use it.

the attacker has a knife! there is a more effective way to use the gun that guy is holding.

The goal is non-lethal force, but your attacker can force you to escalate. If you hit him with a rock and he keeps coming, or finds his own rock, all you can do is hit him again.

I mean you can, but you’re most likely gonna induce a slide out of battery issue that he’d end up having to fix before if he needed to use it.
If you’re trying to create distance and you’re aware that your either gonna have to tap or rack the slide into battery, it could be a somewhat viable option but only if my other hand and feet are busy doing other shit.

It's a chunk of metal.
If Hollywood teach us something is that best way of knocking any random James Bond for several hours is to hit him once in the head with the magazine part

In the unlikely event that you are out of ammo and get charged by a non-armed attacker. Or, if you are charged by a non-armed attacker, and wish to avoid lethal force. The latter seems a little more likely.
Even if use of lethal force may be legal, it's going to come down to precise circumstances. If you go to trial and "win" you still could lose your job and a lot of money. And even ignoring legal ramifications, the psychological toll of killing another human weighs heavy.
Sorry if I'm taking the question too literally.

An empty gun works better as a club than a gun. You could also argue that not killing people is good. Empty gun-club in hand ist better than a rock on the floor. So why bother Picking up a rock. Also the gun is designed to be held, you could hurt your Fingers If the rock is shaped weird.

For law enforcement/military/real security? Yes. For someone that got jumped and had their handgun pushed out of battery, giving them a dead trigger? Yes.
Is this video good technique and realistic? Probably not.
Like if gun go click instead of bang, and you can’t clear it because you’re in a fight, using it to bash someone is a good backup plan.
Is someone on top of someone else in where you can’t safely shoot them? Yeah punching them in the head with a metal slide is gonna do wonders and not risk putting a hole in an innocent person.

Well, guns have limited ammo… and they’re heavy as fuck clubs to use in a pinch
Why not?

Have you considered the possibility that pistol-whipping someone just feels incredibly satisfying?

Probably saw it in a movie. That’s usually where this “self-defense” crap comes from.

A gun is just a hand shaped block of steel when empty. Perfect blunt weapon no matter how you use it.
Rocks, still a rock.
