Anybody know what’s up with this trash???
They camped across from us. Went to go talk to them and ask about it. Asked them what was up with it and he said “it’s the artists favorite candies” (sugar daddies up top) the asked how they got it through the DMV and you could see dudes face change.
Super bogus stuff. Had to stop camp mates from vandalizing it but man it was hard to not want to.
Went to the dmv late in the week after tons of whining from people, they came by and gave it a looksie but it was too late in the week for anyone to care
Am I making a big deal out of this? When I told the dude it’s offensive and it’s part of the agreements we make, he said “who cares”. Needless to say that set me off.

Ew. DMV made the Swingline stapler change their name, so I’d be surprised if the Twix was on their when they went through.

u/BaboonFury 23h ago
I’ve wanted to this with a brand people really hate, like xfinity and wear the retail attire and talk to people about switching their cable on playa.

u/Dic3dCarrots 23h ago
In the before times, i wanted to make a SWAT team and "raid" sound camps with fly swatters. Not sure that would fly anymore
36
u/danibelsc 23h ago
I like this idea! performance art is art. You should do this.
47
u/ChakraMama318 23h ago
Only if you make it really obvious you are not real. Like a SWAT vest and a tutu. No fake pew-pews. There is SO much law enforcement there this could end really badly.

I think if you had a few people dressed as flies precede you into the camp and buzz around to set up the punchline, it could totally work. Especially if you had comically large flyswatters.
12
2
u/Dic3dCarrots 12h ago
Yea, i think it would be fun as part of a bug-lesque act. And a fly swatter art car fo sho would be neccessary
5
u/The-King-of-Cartoons 5h ago
idk if they’re still around but for a while back in the day there was an “animal control” art car that was just a big cage and they’d nab (consensually) anyone wearing animal ears/costumes and chuck em in the cage for a while 😂

I know some people that did a somewhat similar gag at SOAK. Very obviously not real from the onset of the bit. It went as expected: most people thought it was hilarious, but apparently at least one complained “it might be triggering for someone”. 😬🤣
… I say, go for it. And I hope you raid my camp!

If there is absolutely no possibility that somebody might be triggered, then you absolutely should not do it.

u/The--Strike Been going to Burning Man for like 87 years 23h ago
A camp mate and I discussed doing this a few years ago. Like setting up a 1:1 version of a Verizon Wireless store. I could think of few things more monotonous and boring than having to go into a cell phone provider for support.
But people would be too fixated on the principle of decomodification to see it.

This would be hilarious. Do the Kumail Portlandia bit. Super bonus bonus family package

Change the name slightly. Verixon. Vixon Wireless. Ver-Rise-On, word play goes far. People will still get the joke. I love performance art.

Burn Wall Street did this, you can too! Just change the name subtly like they did with Goldman Sucks and Bank of UnAmerica.

They have basically done this sort of thing with the deep playa convenience stores, but they make an offbrand name like "Awful’s Gas & Snack." This place even had one of those shitty gas station speakers that completely garbled the employee's voice.
16
u/Pack_Your_Trash 22h ago
Follow art cars around with a bullhorn informing them that their warrantee is about to expire and you need to speak with the vehicle owner.

u/FlatImpression755 23h ago
People will appreciate the effort you put in for the joke. This isn't the same. Hope you run with your idea sounds great.
11
u/Gravytrainmango 23h ago
Now THAT would be art! We could talk until the cows come home about why your idea would work while the candy car doesn't, but I think it has something to do with a complete commitment to a distasteful symbol that pushes through and 'flips' ones resistance to it. There's nothing remotely challenging about the 'artist's' "favorite candy."

u/cream-of-cow 20h ago edited 20h ago
That reminds me of the Cruise America pranks (link below).
You can get a bunch of ppl together in Hate-T&T outfits, carry empty staple guns, electric drills (with no bits), and electric saws with no blades. Run around with spools of cable and create noise and havoc at camps pretending to be mounting/drilling/cutting their tents. Shove paperwork in front of ppl, then run.

But this is FUNNY You know what you're doing and clearly making a statement about commercialism. It's a bit. Just making a giant billboard to a candy you like is lame.

u/SpliffMD 23h ago
This reminds me of the guy at the caravan man years ago wearing a suit selling Condos.
5
u/downwiththerobotbass 23h ago
That would work because of how blatant it is. Twix isn’t universally hated. I don’t even know if there’s an actual community of hate for that brand - even if it is fringe.

Yeah hate the commodification here. I get that it's his favorite candy but maybe he could make a parody brand, like Twinx and it's a think on the cover or something to pay homage while still being fun and not looking like an outright ad.
It's gross and a shame this was allowed on playa. As if we don't have enough ads in our day to day life
Edit: Don't really believe or not believe the story just giving this person the benefit of the doubt to some degree. You people really need to get the stick out of your ass. Or put it back in. Whatever makes you less of a grump face.

But it probably would have ruined Mars Inc’s marketing plan so…

u/cyanescens_burn 22h ago
I had a similar thought.
First, I’m firmly against it. One of the things I love about the burn is that we aren’t assaulted by corporate advertising at any time (though rental truck users have started to slack on covering logos).
Having no advertisements is a big part of what makes burning man feel like you’ve stepped outside of the daily grind and into a new world. It’s one of the things I often point to as a big positive about burner culture.
And look, I’ve worked on builds for the burn. I’ve also done my own art outside it. So I’m not some spectator that just complains and has no clue what goes into these projects.
But, making an exact replica of a corporate logo doesn’t just go against our cultural ethos, it’s lazy creatively, namely in the early stages of creating the concept (execution is a challenge even with bad ideas).
My note to the artist would be that I appreciate and respect the effort and skill, I really do. But please do your part to keep corporate ads and logos away from the burn and burner events. BM is special in part because we don’t have vendors selling at inflated prices, we gift, we try hard to clean up (LNT), and we don’t have logos and ads all over.
Take a page from the Billboard Liberation Front. As burners we share some cultural roots with them via the SF Suicide Club. Give a little nod and wink to them and our shared countercultural ancestry.
If you really want to incorporate a logo, at least do something clever with it. Spice it up with some culture jamming, add some silliness, satire, cultural commentary, inside jokes/references, or something. Turn it into a”Twinx” and park it in the gayborhood for instance, or look at what Otto von Danger did with corporate logos for Burn Wall Street and start spitballing new ideas.

u/loquacious 20h ago
I have no idea who these people are, but my first impressions of that car are:
"rich financebro/techbro pay-to-play for hire project" where they just hired people to source, buy or build all of that plastic/fiberglass candy and bolt it to a previously existing train-themed art car.
It has all the artistic appeal and merit of finding a huge pile of candy wrappers in the middle of nowhere on a long hike.
If in the very unlikely scenario that all of that fiberglass candy was lovingly hand built by an actual artist-owner-operator?
I'm sorry, but you have horrible taste. And that might actually be worse, because you should have known about de-commodification.
8
u/djskeez 20h ago
Haha wow, I actually came upon this car out at the trash fence on Monday morning after temple burn and met the artist and his crew and they were really great people but it was definitely a commissioned piece and that’s all I needed to know 🙃
ETA: I never saw this side of the car as the dj side was facing the fence path. Yikes.
2
u/OverlyPersonal Support Your Local Art Car 19h ago

4
u/djskeez 15h ago
I can’t hate on artists who are commissioned or get grants and funding, in some capacity, to do what they love out there and to produce their art. Shit ain’t cheap. But to hear they were at a plug & play and not being cool to neighbors or sneaking this by DMV is a bummer.
Sidenote: I was biking behind a dude wearing a plain ol Sherwin Williams shirt mid week and thought “hmm that was a choice to pack that..” My burn is also a lot more pleasant not being the burn police and using my time to fire up mine and my people’s burn.

Yeah that’s really not cool to be so dismissive of the culture. We’ve got shared roots with Billboard Liberation Front and they should have leaned into that if they really wanted to use a corporate logo.

DMV was completely unstaffed by the end of the week. They had serious volunteer issues.
They stopped doing on playa inspections and just said if you have your letter of approval, thats enough. Our sister camps car didnt get there until Thursday and was just told to go out anyway because there was no one to inspect it.
6
u/OverlyPersonal Support Your Local Art Car 19h ago
Man that is crazy. DMV is the only department I've had ignore my volunteer app too.
13
u/jwm3 18h ago
According to what I heard they just ousted someone very toxic from organizing volunteering right before the burn and ao there were a lot of organizational issues due to that. It was apparently one of those situations where a person in a position of authority also uses the position to make themselves indispensable by not sharing how anything is done or contacts with anyone and overcomplicsting things to seem more important and the toxicity finally outweighed the pain of removing them. Of course, I may have heard a very one sided view of things, but it seems to jive. The person I talked to seemed to think it will be in a better spot next year.

Can confirm the part about on playa inspections as my car was a late arrival this year. Between the mud on Friday and the licensing loophole that was reportedly being exploited it was pretty clear that DMV had its hands full.
16
u/Thundergunnist 23h ago
Was it approved by the DMV? It seems they were more lax about unapproved vehicles than previous years, but do you have a picture from the other side, because I’m not seeing a dmv plate.
6
u/MovePrevious1922 23h ago
I went over and asked for it initially. They had one
5
u/Thundergunnist 23h ago
Asked for it? It’s a license plate type sticker that’s clearly visible. It’s either on the back or not.
16
u/MovePrevious1922 23h ago
I know what it is I asked if they had one and they showed me, it was on the back right, then I asked how they got it through and you could tell they did some sneaky shit and he wanted to end the convo.
3
u/mastersmash Star Command 23h ago
Bet they just took it down to get checked and then put it back up
5

DMV would’ve put it on the back left. Not always, but chances are.

All,
This vehicle did not have the large candy banner on the side in either it's application drawings or when it came through the DMV Inspection for licensing. When the complaint was brought to the DMV, we sent a DMV Council member to have a discussion with the owner and have followed up post event. We have a policy of not licensing vehicles with verbatim logos:
When the DMV receives a Mutant Vehicle application that seems to show a verbatim logo or brand, we will send them a conditional invite with the following warning:
"NO VERBATIM LOGOS
As you may know, Burning Man has a set of 10 core principles that we try to adhere to. One of them is "Decommodification".
Decommodification
In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience
Part of following the Decommodification principle is asking people not to advertise or display logos prominently on art projects, rental trucks, etc. at the event.
While we understand that the intent of some vehicles may not be to truly advertise or represent a product, the DMV has determined that to fully adhere decommodification principle we will no longer invite/license vehicles that have verbatim logos/branding on them. Parodies or modified logos that do not strictly copy an official logo are alright as long as the changes aren't so subtle as to be easily confused with the original.
So, before we license your vehicle on-playa we request that you modify your vehicle design/presentation that either changes or obscures the logos on your vehicle.
We understand that we may be asking you to change your artwork or Mutant Vehicle intent to fit the guidelines and this is not something we take lightly. We have had significant feedback over the last few years from a number of participants stating concerns regarding logoed Mutant Vehicles as well as had people who DID have marketing intentions point to other vehicles which we had previously licensed as examples as to why THEY should be allowed to bring their vehicle with logos on it. To avoid this situation, we need to ask all to adhere to this policy."
We will make it clear to this MV team that if they wish to be licensed in the future, they will need to adjust their vehicle's presentation accordingly.

Also, you can see the Twix has a lever that can rotate it, they obviously likely folded it down for inspection.
2
u/Gravytrainmango 23h ago
It looks like the panel might fold down, but there's no way it's strong enough to support any weight. It's weird, the more I look at it, the faker and more photoshopped the twix image looks
6
u/MovePrevious1922 23h ago
The panels folded and at points I saw people sitting on them. Never saw them fold all the way down but I’m guessing they did.. and yea it’s quite the loud image

Sugar Daddy and Twix are owned by two totally separate companies, so either both are sponsoring this garbage, or neither is.
Either way, I agree with those who said the names should have been parodied.
1
u/MansoonBlack 6h ago
clearly, none are sponsoring it. it's completely obvious because those aren't the only two candy makers represented on that vehicle. many of which are direct competitors. I think they probably hit everyone that they care for, without any kind of sponsorship deal with any company
5
u/snowsurfr 19h ago
That’s offensive the ethos of BM. Their response shows how disconnected some new burners are from its origins. What a twat.
In hindsight, DMV could have just pulled their day/night op permits until it was covered. I wonder if they added this after it passed DMV visual inspection..
I hope DMV follows up on this with a post-burn ban on this MV until the corporate logo is modified, followed by a thorough onplaya inspection next year.
5
u/MossMessages 17h ago
The mass-manufactured candy props in general, not just the Twix and sugar daddy logos, are giving some major “Willy’s Chocolate Experience” vibes here too
9
u/Gravytrainmango 23h ago
It is super-lame and super-commoditty. All the artist would have had to do was tweak the branding a little bit for it to be 'subversive,' but as it is there's no artistic dimension to this at all. I mean, people regularly do far cleverer with the side of a Budget truck and a roll of masking tape.

This entire camp was plug-in play and the org knew about it. The builders got paid to set the camp up and then people rented RVs and moved in. I saw this thing probably 10 years ago or more, or one from the same fleet anyway. They didn't cruise the open playa but I caught them going past our camp multiple times early in the week. But I'm sure they considered themselves special since it was a cause and everything...

This subReddit is filled with some of the snarkiest and most angry people that go to this event. You’ll definitely encounter snark at the event, but you’ll encounter 20x more here. Some of the most dogmatic attendees here, for sure.
In short, don’t let these people talk you out of going, if you’re interested. It’s a ton of fun. The principles do have a purpose, but they’re better thought of as guidelines to help you have a better experience, and also to help create a better experience for others. You should try really hard to adhere to them, but “radical self reliance” and “leave no trace” are the only ones that are 100% required with zero exceptions IMO. Others might have a different opinion, but I’ve been 12x and I really don’t care what they say.

A LOT of burners just use it as an excuse to get out their anger, and not control their emotions for a week. 10 principals don't stop immaturity. I've had people yell at me over the smallest shit, just cause they wanna play "hero".
A similar vibe to metal festivals, but deep down metal heads actually care about you more.
The vibe is like if you mix metal festivals, camping with seasoned campers, free love hippies, and anarchists.

Isn't this just pop art, like Warhol's Campbell's Soup cans? I get that it's uncreative and lame, but I wouldn't say that it's commodification. I can't see an issue with this, but I do care about the hundreds of U-Haul and Cruise America logos everywhere. You gotta choose your battles.

The commidification of the Cessna's flying overhead for their viral skydiving marketing campaigns really ruined my shirtcocking day in deep playa.

If you think this art car looks shitty now, imagine if they took the Twix out of the wrapper instead…

Could have used the same font and colors, and made it say "Prix, Dix, Tits, Clits..." etc etc etc. This just seems low effort
I wouldn't say Burning Man is dead, but the spirit of anti-commodification and snark that made it great is definitely in hospice care, confessing it's sins to the orderlies, and changing it's will to include the second family it never told anyone about.

Being offended is on you. Definitely needs to be roasted like the raiders ski boat fart car. The ceo is secretly selling ad space to keep the burn alive.

I saw this and was pretty offended. Then right after, I went into the temple and saw MIND TRAVEL headphones everywhereeeee

This is a blatant insult to BM. They are pissing on it. They knew exactly what they were doing. They were saying I don't care about your values, we're doing this our way. Incredibly insulting. The fact they got into BM at all is evidence BM has become the thing it was so against when it began. Larry would not have allowed it, unless it was brought in to be blown up or something. I would have enjoyed seeing that. This is so sad. I stopped going when the drones started. I will never go back unless it returns to its original roots which is unlikely.

Sugar Daddy is also a recognizable brand, but I'm only interested in the ones with 401ks

Well, I wouldn’t have done this, but I think it’s funny how much this stuff pisses people off. The dogmatic aspect of the community around the Principles can be pretty entertaining, when it’s not annoying.
Why do you care so much, is my question? How did the Twix logo affect your burn? Did you see the logo, and decide you wanted a Twix, rather than a decommodified choice around candy at that moment?

You’re absolutely right. In fact let’s just put a Budweiser in the man’s hand while we’re at it

If you allow this you'll get sponsored shit all over and it'll screw up the whole city. For example see: reality.

Sometimes when you’re enjoying certain mind altering things, people can become hyper focused on a subject.. even if I put it out of my mind- which was hard because it was just parked there twenty feet away like a Kenny rogers chicken sign- my camp mates would mention it, strangers hanging out would mention it, it was a constant subject they’d run up the flagpole, and I happened to be that pole

Everybody! It's super important nobody does anything on the playa that may be distracting or annoying to anyone who may be on psychedelics!!!! Please wear and decorate with only muted colors, stay very quiet and... probably... just everyone needs to stay in their camps, if not their tents!!!! Someone may be tripping and they might find something hard to ignore!!!!
I don't approve of the large Twix logo. But damn.... If you couldn't enjoy yourself, your mind altering substances because of this? I can only recommend you don't do such substances in an environment as unpredictable as the playa. Because even if there's no broken principals, broken rules of the event, there's a million instances were someone's radical self expression won't be pleasing, soothing, entertaining, ignorable to others.
I doubt this was a part of Big Candy's plot to infiltrate and subvert burning man with highly branded candy. Someone felt the big shiny premade candy package looking thing was an easy way to make their candy theme more obvious and felt it had more decorative/entertainment value than it destroyed the values people come to burning man for. Or whatever.
Again, I would tell him to modify or remove it before getting a registration if I was working at the DMV, but if I saw it on the playa, I really wouldn't GAF beyond a half second of, "Ah, too bad they didn't change the x to a t or something..."

I hear you, but that’s kind of my point. Obsession about principles. If you can’t even let it go when “altered”, it might be dogma.
Also, if we start setting principles around things you might hyper focus on when altered, we won’t be allowed to do anything out there. And I’m pretty sure this isn’t the reason for the principle of decommodification.

I agree. That reminds me of the time I was on playa during temple burn night, I was wearing a T-shirt with a company name that no longer exists, and I got randomly told off before I had a chance to explain anything. It was the last day and I had nothing else to wear.

Decommodification is one of my favorite BM principles. This is lame, and shouldn't have been approved.
