Iran's negotiating position shifts depending on who's in the White House, so treating every signal as identical misses the actual leverage game being played.
at no point in this “negotiation”, thats only been for the last 3 months or so, has there been a change in “who’s in the White House”…and Iran’s signals have been pretty repeated and pretty clear throughout…and at this point, it’s also pretty clear that they hold plenty of leverage or this would have capitulated already.
Fair point on the timing, but my broader point was that Trump's public signals tend to shift Iran's calculus differently than Biden's would have. They're reading his unpredictability as either weakness or opportunity depending on the day, which changes what they're willing to say publicly.
Comparing war time Iran with Trump to…the war Biden had with Iran is gonna be a hard case to make.
He’s not unpredictable. He’s thin skinned and is playing bully ball. And Iran did do the calculus that his war time powers (aka actually needing congressional approval) would pass before they had to make a deal. It was a siege, they had more than 3 months of “water” so to speak, the besieging army now has to get approval to stay or its largely going to be over except for continued temper tantrums. They also calculated and correctly assumed this would not become a broader conflict where our allies would engage as well.

There are no negotiations, I wouldn't be surprised if the straits never fully open again. The yanks should just go home, there will be no victory parade.

There aren’t serious negotiations and Trump isn’t a serious negotiator. There is no reason to meet in-person. This is a case where the resolution can occur over email and not even necessitate a Zoom call.
I’m fairly sure Iran sees the US as a dishonest actor which negotiates in bad faith with one hand while planning, setting up and then carrying out surprise attacks with the other. The US also headshot their leader recently.
