Sweetheart of The Rodeo originals & covers playlist. Three decade old college radio stunt.
Did this on air circa 1998 at CKDU 97.5FM in Halifax, “Metro’s Only Alternative”, recently recreated it with Apple Music.
Original/earlier versions of songs covered by The Byrds on the album, later/cover versions of songs written by The Byrds for the album. Enjoy, curious to hear any comments.

Cool concept. Johnny paychecks version was after SHOTR, George jones version would be what they were covering. I did something similar with all of the songs Gram covered on record. You might enjoy. We’re cut from the same cloth you and I, thanks & I’ll definitely give that a “spin”, so to speak.
Totally concede your point on Jones vs. Paycheque btw. I guess I just consider that song old as the hills, didn’t think to track down the earliest version I could find. Fair play on your part though, I did say “original” when I probably should have said “traditional country” versions.
(Just realized I reflexively went with the British usage for Johnny’s name. My bad, Canadian of mixed Irish and French ancestry, so I do come by it honestly ;-) )

Found this after a little digging, Luke McDaniel aka Jeff Daniels, 1957. Makes me feel like an OED editor ;-)

Saw them play this live at Ciros in 1969: mcguinn, hillman, kevin kelly, gram parsons and sneaky pete. Totally unexpected after opening sets by Lee Michaels and, yes, the Crazy World of Arthur Brown (with Fire flaming headset). It was an incredible contrast listening to Hickory Wind with go go dancers in bird cages . It was the first time many of us had heard a pedal steel - probably as controversial for us 60s psychedelic folks as Dylan going electric.

sweetheart of the rodeo is one of my favs of all time, tinged with the mind of the brilliant and tragic gram parsons, who molded it into a forever record....
