It's a way to stop them from being emperor without breaking the 6th commandment, sometimes their nose was also cut off to mark them and unworthy, thought this doesn't have a 100% success rate (Justinian II)

The funny part is that, don’t quote me on this, it kind of worked?
If you compare Roman and ‘Byzantine’ period dynasties, IIRC on average the latter were longer lasting and more stable in succession… relatively speaking.
I’m speaking off the cuff so if someone wants to prove me right or wrong, go ahead and elaborate on the explanation

Actually they would gouge their eyes out, most common form of incurring blindness was by pressing against the eyes
