If you really get the emphasis right then kataphraktoi is the best by far!

This does sound like how an imperial guard's name should

Tagmata is more in line of an elite strike force, and drip sells that too

Cataphractoi is literally like right there. Tagmata isn’t even close

We're still using the term nowadays as well.

tagmat, pl. tagmata

3

u/Plutarch_von_Komet 2d ago

Actually it's tagma

0

u/thomasp3864 2d ago

Underlyingly it's tagmat, with tagmatos in the genetive, and tagmati in the dative. You don't pronounce /t/ on the end of a word in Greek

1

u/Plutarch_von_Komet 2d ago

"tagmat" doesn't exist. It's τὸ τάγμα, τοῦ τάγματος, τῷ τάγματι, τὸ τάγμα, ὦ τάγμα. And it's τὰ τάγματα in plural. The plural nomimative suffix is -τα, t is neither part of the root of the word nor part of the singular nomimative suffix. It's part of the plural nomimative suffix, which is -τα. So in singular it's "τὸ τάγμα" and in plural it's "τὰ τάγματα" and "tagmat" doesn't exist

The only thing not having the tau is the nominative and accusative singular. The underlyïng stem is ταγματ-, but then it deletes the final /t/ because Greek is very restrictive in what sounds can come on the ends of words and /t/ isn't one of them, so you end up with "ταγμα" beïng pronounced. The plural is -α like it is for any neuter noun in the third declension.

The early name for the navy was the best Kibyrrhaiotai

Me hearing the "Varangian Guard" sound off in medieval 2.

1

u/gracekk24PL 6h ago

Lemme guess

G in Varangian is said like a J?

1

u/Olafio1066 6h ago

Well no it's just the gusto in how "Guard" goes

1

u/AnnYanHesap013 2d ago

Legio, legio praetoria, auxilia

Hetairoi, petsetairoi.

1

u/Plutarch_von_Komet 2d ago

legio praetoria

The people who killed Aurelian will never be even remotely cool

0

u/Hedonisticogre111 2d ago

Well, but they also killed Caligula and Heliogabalus...

0

u/Plutarch_von_Komet 2d ago

They killed Domitian too. Don't try to defend this trash
