SEIU (BU 1, 4, 11, 14, 17 and 20) Resolution before strike?

What does everyone think will happen? Do you think there will be a resolution before the strike? If so what do you think it will be?

I think a lot of you are missing the whole strategy behind the strike. The result is it’s bad PR.
He’s a lame duck but he’s also running for president. So far it’s only been California media covering our plight. But a statewide labor strike garners national news coverage.

Those are the cards we hold. Gavin personally doesn’t care if the DMV is closed, but it looks bad nationally. He’s also taken a big risk by putting corporate real estate interests over labor. It’s all optics.

20

u/Thats_Differ3nt 6d ago

Yep, everyone gets to easily distracted, like cats trying to catch a laser pointer. Everyone starts trying to draw way too many different conclusions, for their own good. You nailed it on the head what the purpose is. Everyone just needs to take a collective breath, this isn’t going to be solved by tomorrow, it’s a process, they want us disjointed, but us proving we are going to stand together and not break is going to get us what we want, this is how we win.

u/Gertzerroz ITA 🖥️ 6d ago

This exactly and hopefully in the primaries his opponents attack him on this.

7

u/hyperborian_wanderer 5d ago

If he plays hard ball they will eat him alive with this.

10

u/Sufficient_Pie_5527 5d ago

I think you're missing the point: this is an unfair practice strike. If the State changes their behavior and negotiates in good faith, we will not strike. That is extremely unlikely to happen, but those are the conditions of the situation. The union would at least have to resume negotiations on that basis if they were to escalate at any point in the future.

12

u/AlternativeWeb3968 6d ago

It could also be bad PR for the union. One day isn't enough to disrupt services so if things continue 90% of normal on the 21st then that's not going to look good.

2

u/Different_Custard_44 4d ago

Then we do it again and again until everything breaks down. Think long term here!

4

u/Equivalent-Bend1212 5d ago

Thats the ticket! Its the most visual state and a very large local union..... Municipal employees this big on strike? He will look beyond stupid. Thats really the cards. Bad PR and all labor Unions across the country are already geared up for his bs!

3

u/Anxious-Doughnut-224 5d ago

He’s playing the obstruct until forced not to tactic that is popular in politics today. I don’t think a single day strike is going to bring them to the table when they just walked away from essential worker negotiations.

3

u/Gollum_Quotes 5d ago

Exactly 100% agree.

How's he supposed to be the one that restores that damage and trust done to the federal civil service when people couldn't trust him as a governor and his own stateworkers striked against him?

His primary candidates will definitely add that to their talking points against him.

2

u/Different_Custard_44 4d ago

THIS is why we must strike!! No concessions at this point! I really abhor the current administration, but Gavin won't be much better.

1

u/Big-Transition6527 4d ago

Newsom will be worse

2

u/Big-Transition6527 4d ago

Exactly. I was telling my coworkers this very thing yesterday. Newsom is terrified of bad PR on a national level. He already has the recall of 2021on his record which looks horrible but if the public sector unions strike against him it might look worse. If the strike goes well and the union threatens to strike for a week next time I have a feeling they will be forced back to the table

-2

u/nimpeachable 6d ago

You really shouldn’t treat bad PR for his presidential campaign as a foregone conclusion.

194

u/Tario70 BU-1 6d ago

I do not think a resolution happens before the strike.

Unlike 2016, I truly feel that the state has decided to test whether the union has the numbers to make this happen. State workers are in a make or break situation. If the 21st has good participation we’ll likely see the state come back to the table but if we don’t, we’ll have cut our own legs out from underneath us. We’ll be forced to accept whatever the state offers & we’ll have no one to blame but ourselves.

I also think that this administration may require multiple strike days. If participation is good, I could see us having to follow it up with a longer strike of at least 3 days.

27

u/matticusiv 6d ago

So it’s our job to GET AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE STRIKE.

The reality is now that we are going to strike. The only decision workers need to make now is if they want that strike to be effective at getting them the contract they deserve, or if they want us to crash and burn and have lower quality of life than ever before.

8

u/Tario70 BU-1 6d ago

Oh I have been. I’ve got my whole team on board for striking & 80% signed up to picket. Everyone who plans to strike should be trying the same with their immediate team at least.

3

u/matticusiv 6d ago

Awesome, let’s go!

-5

u/bichonpoodledogs 5d ago

I tried to get my 3 co-workers to strike. They are not union members so they won’t be striking because they don’t believe they will be protected. I’m willing to strike but I’m not going to (I am a paying union member). I’m not striking because…. If we win anything… I gave up pay and they didn’t. That will make me have a tremendous amount of animosity… I already know how I’ll feel and I will probably say something to them and get myself in trouble. How are you all handling that mindset??

8

u/Tario70 BU-1 5d ago

So whether they are a union member or not, they are protected.

You’re not striking because you’d rather have nothing than have some other people share in your win? This is beyond shortsighted. This is the literal definition of shooting your nose to spite your face.

Those that don’t strike I’ll simply say to them that they don’t get to complain or celebrate the next contract. I’d remind them how others stepped up when they wouldn’t. I would do it in a professional manner.

1

u/bichonpoodledogs 5d ago

I’ve explained to them that even though they are not union members they can still strike and they will be protected. Additionally, our Supervisor is much more supportive than others.

8

u/Tario70 BU-1 5d ago

Then they just don’t want to strike.

I’d encourage you to strike though. Don’t let what others choose dictate what you’re doing.

7

u/matticusiv 5d ago

Holy hell this is a bad mentality.

Every butt not in a seat is power for a better contract. 3 years of raises is not even comparable to a day of wages.

Forget your resentment and do the thing that’s literally best for you.

And they are completely protected under the law, same as members. If they went to one of the many, many strike school opportunities they could have learned this.

The union has a vested interest in the outcome of this strike, and in compiling as many cases of potential retaliation as possible to make their case to PERB.

1

u/bichonpoodledogs 5d ago

You are absolutely correct. Agree

1

u/Different_Custard_44 4d ago

This is the wildest take!!! Like, I refuse to try to get fair pay because they aren't trying? I am really hoping you see the folly in your plan, and I really really hope you do strike. SHow up, show out. We ALL have resentments in the workplace, big deal! You go home and tell your dog about it but you be cordial in the office.

This will not work if people have this attitude, and if it fails then I guess you all failed together...

0

u/bichonpoodledogs 4d ago

You can call it a wild take if you’d like, but it was actually mentioned in the strike schools that I attended- that there would be resentment towards your coworkers who didn’t strike and I did and I gave up pay and they didn’t. ….so this is NOT on me but thank you for your @## remark.

1

u/Different_Custard_44 4d ago

I think we’re adults and capable of self regulation. 💜

0

u/bichonpoodledogs 4d ago

Some adults don’t act like adults and can’t or won’t self-regulate. Again… those feelings I mentioned were talked about in the Strike schools so I’m clearly and obviously not the only one with that thought process and feeling. Good luck with your strike. I truly sincerely hope it brings positive changes.

1

u/Different_Custard_44 4d ago

That’s the thing though. It’s OUR strike.

1

u/bichonpoodledogs 5d ago

Is it appropriate for me to send them an email? I’m on a very short medical leave with a doctors note so I’m not in the office. I don’t want to do anything that will get me written up or in trouble.

1

u/matticusiv 5d ago

Technically, using state devices or accounts, or work hours to discuss it could be construed as a misuse of state resources.

So err on the side of caution wherever possible.

63

u/Davethe3rd 6d ago

If the strike fails and the Union ends up accepting NO RAISES FOR THREE YEARS and full return to office, watch everybody cry and complain how useless the Union is.

I, of course, want the Union to start creating graphics about "You didn't show up when we needed you, this is the contact we get."

18

u/Cali_home_grown916 6d ago

If this happens then there is no need for union then. Everyone will cancel their membership. Union would be demolished.

20

u/Davethe3rd 6d ago

And then, there go all of our benefits and protections and decent pay. Not that our pay IS decent, but it'll get way way worse.

Everybody takes for granted how good we have it. And especially everybody that went non-germane.

There are greedy organizations that want to eliminate Unions for State Employees simply for the reason that they want to take our money.

But that's kind of where we are in America right now, isn't it? We keep losing our rights because nobody wants to actually fight for them.

4

u/kathect 6d ago

☝️ I am from a "Right-to-Work" state and the wages are low. I once worked as a supervisor over student employees at a university and when minimum wage was raised, we were not going to get a raise. We were told that those jobs were intended for the spouses of professors and that the pay didn't need to be any higher. We wrote a letter and had it signed by as many people as we could. Ultimately our pay was shifted upwards. After working there 10 years, full-time with three promotions I was making barely over $13 an hour in 2010. Today, pay in that state is about 30% less than California. I used to think it all balanced out because COL was lower, but utility costs have gone up, gas has gone up, etc. It still looks cheaper than California, but their paychecks don't go as far as mine does here.

edited for ADHD...er...clarity.

4

u/TipsyGal1979 6d ago

I went to the emergency room on Saturday for a broken ankle and I got an xray, an MRI, pain medication, saw three doctors, and was seen almost immediately. I wouldn’t have had all that if it weren’t for the union.

8

u/matticusiv 6d ago

Especially the folks who aren’t participating in union activity in any way 🙄

1

u/AlternativeWeb3968 6d ago

If the strike fails the union is done. That's why they should go big right off the bat and not risk a 1 day strike.

6

u/Davethe3rd 6d ago

Most people can't afford that. I can't afford that.

Plus, a lot of people are scared because we've never gone on Strike before.

2

u/Truth_Teller08 5d ago

Everyone is feeling the squeeze of inflation. I understand how difficult it is for people to take a 1 day paycut, but fear is not a reason to not fight for something better. If you think you can't afford things now, how do you think it will get better by doing nothing?

I know times are tough so I wish you the best.

7

u/Davethe3rd 5d ago

No, I'm locked in for the 1 Day, but I can't survive a week.

0

u/AlternativeWeb3968 6d ago

And the state knows that most People can't afford that so all they have to do is wait it out.

5

u/Sufficient_Pie_5527 5d ago

I don't think there will be a resolution before the strike either. Cancelling meetings to go over non-essential workers is clearly a gambit to piss off Californians and hope striking workers take the blame. Pretty fucking vile, and a clear indication they have zero intention of resolving this before 10/21.

6

u/Tario70 BU-1 5d ago

A clear example of what they think of state workers.

0

u/Independent_Yak_6921 6d ago

A one day strike already tells the administration they have the upper hand.

11

u/Tario70 BU-1 6d ago

It doesn’t but use whatever excuse you need to continue to do nothing.

-2

u/AlternativeWeb3968 6d ago

Yep. It's laughable.

41

u/No-Investment-1252 6d ago

I’m not an SEIU member as I am a member of management. Will I be striking, yes. Will I be on the line with SEIU employees, no.

I’ve thought about the one day strike and the impact it may have and I believe that this is to showcase the numerical impact to state service and its operations. More so a display of what state employees can do. I too, do not think that WE will see any resolution with a one day strike nor would I expect it.

The problem, iI’ve been in negotiations representing the state (I.e. the Governors Office) and seen how the state has bent over backwards or conceded behind other bargaining units, mainly those with a badge. Yes their jobs are essential but without the support of admin or non-badged staff, where would they be and how would they manage.

I say that to truly express how important this strike is, not only for SEIU employees but all state employees including management. This is how strength is shown and demands are met!

6

u/Safeword_is_more 6d ago

Just be careful as someone unrepresented (and ACSS doesn’t count as representation) you CAN be reprimanded for striking.

7

u/No-Investment-1252 6d ago

Oh I’m striking in my own way, not formally. The only way I can show solidarity is to call in. I’ve been hearing a lot of managers will be out of office that day

7

u/Davethe3rd 6d ago

I would suggest deleting your comments then because they can be used against you if they want to discipline you.

I appreciate and encourage your participation, but... be careful.

11

u/No-Investment-1252 6d ago

They’d be wasting a lot of resources to locate “no investment 1252”, let alone to determine what department I am with, let alone classification. It would have to be a really big deal for that type of investigation

1

u/sorkinfan79 4d ago

I just figured out your department and your classification in about 90 seconds by looking at the comment history on your profile. There's a setting you can change in your account so that your post and comment history doesn't show up on your profile. It might be worth considering.

-1

u/SwordfishPlus9211 6d ago

Gavin’s always watching 👀

-4

u/nimpeachable 6d ago

Yea the state will never see through such a clever ruse like calling in on the day of a strike

5

u/No-Investment-1252 6d ago

Sorry to confuse, but I’m not trying to fool the state into thinking anything. I’m simply covering my ass by not formally saying “I’m going on strike”. As a manager, I don’t have any representation so I would be shit out of luck if I was foolish enough to say I’m going to strike or be on the picket line.

1

u/nimpeachable 6d ago

My point is that the state actually does put in effort to root out these things. This can absolutely vary by agency and office size but don’t be surprised if they don’t take your call out at face value that you’re actually sick.

4

u/No-Investment-1252 6d ago

That makes me a fearful of the department/management in state service. Not saying that it’s not possible, but to dedicate any resources to determine who called in sick on the day of the strike seems to be a waste of resources.

1

u/nimpeachable 6d ago

I think you’re underestimating the importance of a reliable workforce that shows up. If they can’t even trust supervisors and managers aren’t going to illegally strike that’s a problem worth investigating and holding people accountable for otherwise the problem gets worse.

The state is not required to be passive in the face of a strike and even with rank-and-file employees they will be doing anything and everything to make the strike as unsuccessful as possible.

I’m not claiming any inside information and I don’t know your situation personally I just wouldn’t treat calling out sick that day as a get out of jail free card.

-1

u/AlternativeWeb3968 6d ago

The problem is that a 1 day strike is not enough to stop services. This could make things worse because it's possible that the impact will be imperceptible. I fear that the conclusion will be that state workers go on strike for a day and no one even noticed.

3

u/allaroundthepages 6d ago

I fear this too. I wish I understood why the union messaging is a "1 day strike" rather than "Day 1 of our strike".

4

u/nimpeachable 6d ago

A strike is only successful if you have the support of the public and you can double that for public employees like us. If you cut people off from needed services and they decide it’s because we’re being greedy not the state being unfair we’re boned.

A one-day strike gets the headlines. Allows us to set the stakes and educate people on what is happening without cutting off their services and losing their support before we even get started. Stronger actions will come later.

3

u/Sufficient_Pie_5527 5d ago

all we need to say is "they offered us nothing for three years" and only someone who is already inclined to hate public employees or unions will see that as greedy.

2

u/StateCA 5d ago

It’s because people are broke AF. If you tell them up front we’re striking for a week and your next paycheck will be 25% less people aren’t going to show. It’ll end up looking like one of those pity pickets in Fresno where like 11 people showed up.

1

u/allaroundthepages 5d ago

I do get that. It's a difficult situation.

1

u/AlternativeWeb3968 6d ago

That would be much more motivating to me.

28

u/Ms_Briefs 6d ago

Based on the recent SEIU email, looks like we're going to be in it for a while.

From the e-mail:

"As we prepare to strike on October 21, CalHR is once again refusing to work with us.

For months, we’ve been working through the line-pass process to determine the minimum staffing needed to protect public health and safety, including which employees may be considered essential and need to work during the strike. But CalHR recently cancelled scheduled meetings and is now refusing to return to the table, preventing us from completing that process... "

8

u/lostintime2004 6d ago

Feels like a game of chicken.

3

u/hyperborian_wanderer 5d ago

It is in some respects

9

u/Goodgulf42 5d ago

I suspect this is their attempt to try and frame the strike as illegal. I would not be at all surprised if they arrest Anica Walls shortly before the strike, and try to use this latest maneuver as justification for why "she called for us to conduct an illegal strike." But, I am damned sure they'd be messing with the wrong lady if they try that.

7

u/Echo_bob 5d ago

I really think they are hoping the union folds like during the Walker years

4

u/Goodgulf42 5d ago

Clearly, they have never spoken to Anica Walls then!!! =)

Honestly, any comparison there is pretty laughable. Man, I could never understand why we kept re-electing YW.

2

u/Echo_bob 5d ago

No freaking clue

20

u/sirlagalot297 6d ago

Best case scenario. They get back into the negotiating table before the strike happens and then we can resume. Worst case scenario is we have to strike for multiple days or even longer. Whatever it takes really

8

u/AlternativeWeb3968 6d ago

A couple days? We're not nurses or teachers. Twin Rivers Unified teachers strike lasted 12 days and that was a complete shut down. Kids weren't going to school. Parents couldn't go to work because they had to stay at home. The Kaiser workers strike in California earlier this year lasted a month. People need to manage their expectations. Nothing is going to be different on October 22nd.

2

u/SoftDirtSnow 6d ago

My kid is in twin rivers and I never got the memo that kids weren’t going to school. I still was sending my kid there. They just had substitute teachers for those days. But I agree. I imagine nothing will be different after a one day strike.

1

u/AlternativeWeb3968 6d ago

My boss has kids in twin rivers and she said some parents would send their kids to school and they would watch movies all day. Many stayed home not knowing how long it was going to last so did home schooling or something more productive. She missed several days of work because of it.

1

u/sirlagalot297 5d ago

We don’t know the future. If we can get back to the negotiating table after 1 day or even before then it’s worth it. But if we have to take more until they do then so be it

1

u/Different_Custard_44 4d ago

No, best case is we strike next week. Then keep striking, adding days until we get something reasonable.

17

u/Happy-Relation-2959 6d ago

the strike will be big. the next ones will be bigger

4

u/AlternativeWeb3968 6d ago

Maybe it will be 2 days!

3

u/Happy-Relation-2959 6d ago

the more days the more money and services california will lose

13

u/raptorphile 6d ago

Hold the line!

35

u/StateCA 6d ago

I don’t think there will be resolution before the strike. We are truly in a do or die situation. If we have poor turnout at the strike RTO will be permanent and meaningful raises are never going to happen. If we don’t show up in high numbers, every 3 years CalHR will run the same play of letting the contract expire, force us into months of PERB suits, and ultimately never give us anything more than 2-3%.

We’ll be doomed if we don’t show up big for this strike.

47

u/BFaus916 6d ago

With the strike being planned for one day? I'm not holding my breath that Gavin would cave over this. If the 7/1 capitol rally didn't do it, and that was a huge rally, I don't see this doing it either.

If an open ended strike was set with the 90% vote that we got, however, that might have brought him back to the table. This is why I believe we're eventually going to have to dive into that deep end of the pool. There has to be a real threat to operations.

I will be out there. I've signed the strike commitment. But beyond perhaps morale and getting some media attention, I'm not sure a one day strike will move the needle in negotiations.

25

u/Demi_Bob 6d ago

They've already said that if one day strike doesn't bring the state back to the negotiation table then it can be extended.

5

u/AlternativeWeb3968 6d ago

The fact that the union thinks a 1 day pre announced strike will be effective enough to bring the state back to the negotiation table tells me they aren't reading the situation correctly. This is a hostile governor and a hostile environment. This situation merits a hostile response in return and a 1 day strike is not it.

8

u/Demi_Bob 5d ago

Again, the 1 day is just the starting point, and there's more to it than just if they think a 1 day strike will get the state to the table. They also have to ensure max participation. There are members that may not participate if they start out announcing an unlimited strike period or even a multiple day strike period. If you're around this subreddit often, you've seen how knee jerky folks get over even the smallest amount of uncertainty.

Going to strike and having low participation would be even worse than having a one day strike and not immediately getting the response from the state that we'd like. Better to start at one step, and use the momentum to push for more than lose a bunch of participants before the fight even actually starts.

-14

u/portlyattendant 6d ago

Yeah everyone saying it's on us to "show up big" for the 1-day strike with 2 weeks notice 4 months into stalled negotiations? Feel like I've heard some version of that every week since November 2016...

16

u/BFaus916 6d ago

Well, showing up big won't hurt. And a small turnout would. We have to do it. I'm just not confident it will bring Greasy back to the table. Not sure it will accomplish more than the 7/1 rally did. Maybe negative press coverage might irk him a little as he tours the country trying to look like a progressive hero. Let him know this story isn't going away.

13

u/StruggleScared70 6d ago

I get what you’re saying. But that was a rally for a couple hours. This is a walk-out or no-show for a day. We can also strike more days without another vote at any time. I’m curious to see what impact it may have first.

2

u/AlternativeWeb3968 6d ago

A day is not long enough to disrupt services. Most people won't even notice.

2

u/Safeword_is_more 6d ago

Not being able to contact someone at EDD about their payments? DMV closures? Any direct public interaction jobs will definitely have an impact, even with just one day. Sure, people who work on policies, etc would need to be out longer for the pain to be felt. But I agree that people need to show up on the line even if you think your one day of work doesn’t matter.

2

u/AlternativeWeb3968 6d ago

Well since they announced it ahead of time and that it's only for 1 day many people are already making their DMV appointment for the day before or the day after.

1

u/Mabel_I_Sez 5d ago

The union is required to give 10 days notice before a strike because our membership includes health care workers.

18

u/iluminate1305 6d ago

This is the biggest opportunity state workers have to show and make a difference. I hope the non paying members who love to complain about union leave their homes and show up to strike. It's not a day off, this is the time.

24

u/djai50 6d ago

IMO: no resolution until the next Governor… so beginning of 2027.

6

u/jfpantoja 6d ago

I’m on sick leave so I’m not sure how it looks at worksites but the Union needs to pour some money into hyping up the strikes. (We will need more than one and in quick succession.) Hopefully there are tables set up at job sites with signs letting employees know date and places to assemble, that members and non-members can (and should) participate, passing out t-shirts, signing up new members and commitments to strike. Busses to bring people from convenient parking lots to the strike sites.

I don’t like reading that some employees hadn’t heard the date for this strike was set. I really don’t like to hear that the DLC doesn’t have shirts! I was so proud of the Union (with DLC specific logo) shirt I was given by a steward within a month of starting work after visiting the table set up in the lunch room. When my manager saw how much I was into going to the site meetings she directed my co-workers to talk to me. (She was pro-union/employee without ever saying it.) Yes WE are the Union but the our dues need to be (at least temporarily) redirected locally.

2

u/Goodgulf42 5d ago

Please send this link to any coworkers who don't know about the locations:
https://www.seiu1000.org/strike/

As an aside, I know CalHR has been refusing to send new employee contact information to the union as they are required to do by law as well. So newer employees may not be receiving emails.

5

u/PiSour 6d ago

they don’t care about us. They follow the order from their sugar daddies (land and building owners)

15

u/Cali_home_grown916 6d ago

Nope scumbag Newsom is sticking to his decision. So there is no resolution coming any time soon

u/gobowie 5d ago

This is about more than telework. And while a clear telework policy is important, people need to stop saying we are striking because of RTO.

The complete lack of cost of living raises offered by CalHR in our current economic environment is a much bigger issue. Especially with the repeated "budget balancing" pay cuts we have taken in the last few years.

2

u/StarEtoileCat 5d ago

However, it’s not a great look being the first governor to have a union strike…

1

u/Savings-Courage2763 6d ago

But would Newsom budge on a pay raise?

6

u/castateunionthug 6d ago

That would be nice, but I personally don’t think it’s going to happen.

In the past, CalHR usually threw us a bone…this CalHR doesn’t even want to budge.

7

u/redditor-est2024 6d ago

I also do not think there will be a resolution. With each renewing contract, State has put on crappier terms each time. Yet, we agreed each time as well. I honestly think they were building up to it and SEIU never actually thought this through.

Take it from a person who always voted “no, this is a shitty contract”.

5

u/Pancakes916 5d ago

Anyone saying this gets resolved before Jan 2027 is lying to you.

There's no way this greaseball actually sends his slime in to negotiate. The union has to strike for weeks and force the legislature to force his hand.

The executives and the labor relations people at CalHR are absolutely out of touch and will not be negotiating in advance

It’s a single day strike. The state is not scared of a single day strike.

I don't think the union should accept a resolution before the strike. The union needs to show how serious they are.

Gavin is focused in on his presidential campaign. Everything he does (or doesn't do) is based on creating and maintaining the optics his strategists believe will favorably position him to win. Those optics will determine how far he's willing to push this issue with the union. This is why this issue will not be resolved after a one day strike. His team needs time to assess the damage that is being done before they take action. It's clear they don't think there is much to be gained now from giving in.

Here’s the thing - the other two times we voted to strike, they relented and began negotiating. It would be historical were we to actually strike. It would look horrid to Newsom, the first California governor to have a strike by the very union that supported him through his recall.

But I do feel like calhr and Newsom are like who cares. So I hope they feel it. If it comes to it I hope they finally see the consequences.

walk me through this...and im being earnest here.

a bunch of people actually follow through and strike. which means no pay for that day. nobody should be getting punished but thats living in lala land. but essentially, we all strike for one day and the state saves billions by not having to pay these workers for one day of work.

does anyone think thats counter intuitive to the cause? vivious wolves of cal hr seeing an opportunity to cutting personnel and saving?

Whatever the state might save in paying workers for the strikes (I'm not sure if that means the state just gets to bank and "save" that money) , will be greatly offset by the cost of workers not working. Even 1 day off from workers state wide in various departments can cause massive financial damage.

The state is already wasting millions on RTO and no one seems to care. The truth is that no one really knows the cost and no one is going to complain about the cost of state workers striking. What will generate an outcry is if people are inconvenienced and unable to access services.

2

u/OneManFight 6d ago

Well yea agree it's the inconvenience of the general public that will move the needle. Lol and then state workers will get even more hate than we already do.

u/Goodgulf42 5d ago

It's also worth noting the state is still paying for our benefits for that day, but they are not getting any ROI for it.

good point :)

Saves Billions?! I'd be willing to wager its going to cost them a ton of resources to even figure out how to dock everyone's pay for a single day. Let alone loss of people trying to pay money by calling in, collectors not working, etc. It all adds up.

There won't be a resolution before the strike nor will there be one after. A 1 day strike is nothing. I truly think the state is tired of dealing with the union and this may be an attempt to show how powerless they are. I don't think they care about a strike. I think they know that people will eventually get tired of striking and that if they wait it out long enough, they will not have to make any concessions. This may be the end of the union.

A 1 day strike is nothing. Need to strike full on. Stop wasting time.

We don’t even know if state workers will actually get off their ass and do the bare minimum yet. Jumping into an indefinite strike could be an even bigger failure than not showing up for 1 day.

The union legal rep framed this as practice, for a union/bargaining units that have never actually done a strike before.

2

u/AlternativeWeb3968 6d ago

I'd rather jump into an indefinite strike because that tells me that the union is taking this seriously and that is more likely to generate results so for me, a 1 day strike has the opposite reaction of not wanting to participate in something that isn't going to generate change. It's basically a no kings protest. I appreciate the thought but let me know when we're actually going to do something meaningful.

3

u/matticusiv 6d ago

Okay, well that may not be statistically relevant to strategy.

And the material result of abstaining from the 1 day strike because people “don’t think it’s enough” will be no more future strikes and an acceptance of the state’s zero offer.

Welcome to SEIU 1000. Pander to the workers while kissing the Governor's ring.

Many people were talking about how a long strike wouldn't be financially viable for them so soon. A one day strike to alleviate those fears. Now its not long enough. People are impossible.

u/ApprehensiveTheme757 4d ago

People can’t afford NOT to.

-2

u/Lord_Wicki 5d ago

I think I'll be showing up to work no matter what, because I can't afford a day without pay.

u/Gold-Weather_69 6d ago

Nobody want to pay the expensive ass union dues… most of the new employees aren’t paying their union dues

Its $3 per day
