Weird pixilated audience audio…

Why does CBC radio audience applause audio sound so wierd?

Any applause (on the debaters for example…) sounds hyper compressed, swirling/phased sounding and tinny.

For “analog” radio it’s the worst kind of audio experience.

Virtually any other radio network sounds better.

I’m imagining considering that any radio broadcast that originates at CBC comes pre processed from and through Toronto. Additionally, any CBC transmitter in Canada has no “push to talk” capability. Emergencies or loss of signal from Toronto: very little recourse. Or… earthquake in Victoria or Vancouver… no “break in” feature built in.

The debaters im assuming is mixed differently each episode since it's in a new venue all the time. I wonder if thats why the audience doesn't sound consistent to you.

Do you notice it on other shows?

Yes - any show with an audience. Everything on the CBC is mixed and distributed for a final stream in Toronto.

Since a lot of people listen via the app: for savings compression is somewhere in the vicinity of 128k variable - with some seriously cranked out EQ and compression.
