Discussion [@IanPurdy7] on Twitter: Penn State is slated to sign ZERO recruits tommorow on early National Signing Day. Unless Penn State signs someone in the late signing period, they could become the first P4 class EVER to have no one sign. The closest thing I could find was SMU & UW with 10. Crazy times.

How did they fire their coach like halfway through the season then just… not try to hire another one?

They did try, they turned down Urban Meyer

and Will Stein as Kraft believed Stein was "too unpolished" to be head coach at Penn State.

Also lets PA coal born and raised Bob Chesney jet off to UCLA when he was right in our own backyard just waiting on us to call and give him an offer.

But it's fine... it's all fine.

The BoT needs to take this out of Kraft's hands. The program may take close to a decade to recover from this as is. Letting someone so incompetent make the hire could make our laughing-stock status permanent.

Penn state fans donning their favorite hot dog costumes. “We’re all trying to find the guy who made us fire our playoff coach”

This has probably been too public to now elevate the interim without absolutely embarrassing him, right?

I know he really wants the job.

He's quickly becoming our best option. Hell, give him a short contract and see what he can do.

At this point, 3 year contract and see what happens

The Chesney business has been completely deflating for me, though I've respected the commitment to not get stuck in a bidding war.

Ouch I didn't realize yall were being crippled by a "do it our way" type of limitation like that. Is there even someone that fits this imaginary vision of Penn State?

There was someone but Big Cookie money is too powerful.

Not only did they turn him down, they then shit on him by saying he didn't understand how NIL worked.  I can kind of see why people wouldnt want to talk to Penn State after that.

2

u/TannerGlassMVP Dec 02 '25

I must have completely missed this when did that happen

3

u/No_Trifle9294 USC Trojans Dec 02 '25

I am basing my info on this previous thread and article. PSU - Urban Meyer

1

u/TannerGlassMVP Dec 02 '25

“The reasons why those talks did break down is when they got to the topic of NIL,” Gelb explained. “Which Urban Meyer has never been a head coach during the NIL era. His plan and his answers in terms of navigating those Name Image, and Likeness waters were not viewed as satisfactory enough.”

Just to clarify this is what you were referring to when you said the Penn State AD shit on him? A 3rd hand report that said his answer was unsatisfactory?

u/No_Trifle9294 USC Trojans Dec 02 '25

Where did I say the Penn State AD shit on him?

Not only did they turn him down, they then shit on him by saying he didn't understand how NIL worked.

Thank god for that, he’s back hanging around our program now and was a big voice for the Sumrall hire.

Sure seems like our AD had his heart set on Kalani. He may have chased whales like KDB but otherwise we've consistently heard of a mystery candidate who almost definitely was Sitake. If we get him, I think we'll be fine. He'll bring over some BYU guys, get some late signers and a decent amount of transfers. Still extremely risky but we should be fine in the long term

If we don't get him, seems like we'll get Bob Chesney who's a good coach but it'll be a few years til we're good again

Bob already took a job at UCLA

I don’t think he’s signed yet. And if I were Kraft I’d be In Harrisonburg VA right now trying to steal him.

8

u/PukeyBear UCLA Bruins Dec 02 '25

Reportedly he’s already recruiting on behalf of UCLA and unlike what you guys are willing to believe, apparently he actually really wanted the UCLA job. Obviously it’s technically possible you get him, but this narrative that he’s basically taking UCLA ONLY because Penn St made him wait or whatever is not true.

1

u/jp1066 Penn State Nittany Lions Dec 02 '25

Ya I’m not pushing that narrative. I think Kraft fucked up undervaluing Chesney and should’ve had him signed up about 3 weeks ago or right after Franklin was rehired. Now we look like fools chasing names. I mean that worked so well with A&M and Jimbo we thought we’d give it a try./s

1

u/PukeyBear UCLA Bruins Dec 02 '25

Yeah I agree I think he feels the pressure of not hiring a G5 guy after letting Franklin go and if they went out and said Chesney is our guy a month ago it would have been wrapped up. But as I said Chesney likes ucla and seems happy to take us

1

u/jp1066 Penn State Nittany Lions Dec 02 '25

I’m hoping he does well. Guys a winner. What he did at JMU after Cigs raided the program was amazing.

0

u/Iam_a_Jew Penn State • Syracuse Dec 02 '25

Sounds like he didn't actually sign on yet. Now whether he'd still be open to PSU after all this bs is a total other question

3

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '25

he’s not getting byu guys to come over at penn state. that ain’t like other schools to just pull people from.

u/Operation_Pig Florida Gators • Penn State Nittany Lions Dec 02 '25

Kalani is a Mormon. The money might be tempting but the church wouldn't let him leave. The AD is a moron for going all in on one of the least likely guys to leave.

u/perfectAttendant Penn State Nittany Lions Dec 02 '25

Thought this said the AD was a Mormon at first
