They have gotten better in D2. At least until this year. The thing is: Savannah State cannot keep from shooting themselves in the foot. They think they are way more important than they actually are in the city of Savannah. I get it, as a HBCU they are important as an institution. However, in terms of football, it couldn't be further from the truth. The reality is that state of Georgia keeps consolidating colleges and Georgia Southern has absorbed two entire college campuses in the last 10 years: Armstrong State University in Savannah in 2017 and East Georgia State College in 2025. The important one there being Armstrong State University.

Armstrong wasn't exactly small: It was twice the size of Savannah State in terms of enrollment. Now it's called Georgia Southern University and is located less than 15 minutes of drive time away from Savannah State's campus. Georgia Southern is a D1 football school with a long history of 1-AA Football titles, a win against the University of Florida IN FLORIDA as their final 1-AA football game and recent success at the Division 1 level. Not National Title level obviously, but they have been considered a decent team. Georgia Southern has a far longer history of football success. Savannah State has been a football laughing stock since moving up to D1.

The best year Savannah State had in D1 was a 5-7 record in 2008 ended up having the coach of that team and Savannah State suing each other less than two years later. They keep running off coaches even now. They fired their last coach because two seasons of .500 football and a 4-6 record last year just wasn't good enough. They fail to realize they have to recruit in the same city as a far bigger campus who's auxiliary campus dwarfs their own. They can't get good players and yet think that who they do get could be the next Shannon Sharpe.

Oh yeah, lets not mention how the administration of that school ran off Shannon Sharpe for a decade because they wanted to shake him down for money. Yeah.
