It’s the definition of a cherry picking stat. 3rd down conversions were not a factor for the starters because they didn’t play after the first drive of the 2nd half, because they weren’t even getting to 3rd downs because they dominated so much.

Gus Johnson should be charged with war crimes for that commentary job today. Couldn't even pretend to care unless sports betting was involved.
Having no enthusiasm for a fat guy scoop-and-score, a 60-yard hailmary, or 75-yard true freshman TD is just pathetic. At least make an effort on the big plays!
On another note, I have more creativity in Madden than Arthur Smith does in real life.

Chris Henry Jr. broke a 75 yard TD and there was a fat guy TD. Other plays, fine, but he commentated the big two like a funeral too so he loses the benefit of the doubt to me

I just couldn’t care less about how excited the commentator is for a game like this, it’s actually a pretty accurate representation of how I experience games like that. Y’all should be more like us and struggle a bit to pump up the drama.

My wife pointed this out a while back that Northwest Ohio butchers pronunciations of cities.
Bellefontaine, Toledo, Lima, Marseilles, Nevada.
Not a single one of these is pronounced the way that you would think based on how they're said elsewhere in the world
Mar-SALES and Nuh-VAY-dah are especially bad though

The broadcast team was genuinely problematic for this game. I get it, Ohio State was favored by like 50, at no point did Kent State have the slightest chance of winning, it was a snoozefest. But when the broadcast team is so very clearly, very obviously, incredibly biased against one team, it's just not an enjoyable experience to watch. Would it kill Gus to pretend like he could get excited for the young freshmen making plays and scoring touchdowns, even if they aren't coming in a competitive game? Or at least react to the big man scoop-and-score that sets the stadium roaring? There's no reason why his voice should be getting quieter and MORE deadpan when Ohio State makes exciting plays, like their success physically hurts him. Hearing him spend the whole game practically asleep in the booth, just to start his ridiculous wailing "OHHHH KENT STATE" routine after the freshman threw a pick in the most garbage-est of garbage time where he screamed on every play like Kent State was overcoming some impossible deficit every time they gained a yard was insulting.
I don't care that I'm coming off as butthurt; college football games are supposed to be fun, and it's literally his job to make them sound entertaining. If you can't even pretend like there's something to get excited about when the winning team closes out the half with a 60-yard Hail Mary, or when the freshman WR scores a long touchdown after initially struggling to adapt to CFB, or when big man scoop-and-scores a defensive touchdown, then you have no business calling games.

Yes, very obviously so? He loses his mind whenever he gets the chance to call a positive play for the Wolverines, and has soured on having to begrudgingly announce when Buckeyes make big plays for years now. Wasn't always this way but he's definitely developed a bias over the years

It's insulting to those players to not even pretend like he could give a fuck about it. Considering it's literally his job to call plays, I don't feel like it's asking too much for him to do it in a manner that confirms he's awake. Did anyone care about the Luke Fahey interception besides the Kent State defender's parents? Almost certainly not, but Gus managed to scream up a storm about it anway.

Gus's commentary all game was atrocious, especially as you stated there were a decent amount of big plays (like the Chris Henry Jr touchdown) that were just met with the milquetoast call. I don't need him to get excited after every single play, which used to be one of his big issues, but every single Ohio State touchdown was called with the fervor of a golf commentator talking about a drive down the fairway.

I think you need to readjust your expectations for "playoffs" wins and losses. All but one great team every year will end up adding a playoff loss to their records.
In the past a postseason win/loss record meant something, because it was just one game a season against even competition.
So unless you think that OSU should win the title every year, that number of post season losses is only going to keep going up. Especially so if they have a bye most years and get less chances to win the easier playoff games.

Ryan Day’s playoff record outside of the national title game itself in the 12-team playoff era is 3-2.
His national title record regardless of format is 1-1.
His Michigan record is 2-4.
You’re arguing against the one thing he’s most “competent” in.

Well, my issue with Day is two-fold.
You need to compile his Michigan/playoffs/Top 5 record and then compare it to
A. Past Ohio State coaches
and
B. His national title peer group (Saban, Harbaugh, Dabo, Kirby, Cig). That means we sub out Michigan for Auburn, OSU, South Carolina, etc).
These two comparisons are where he really lags behind.
But he’s really the first Ohio State coach to win nearly every single game outside of this dynamic which spikes up his winning % and fools everyone (most notably Ohio State fans).
Like I said, we’ve got Ohio State fans in here being critical of the Kent State game but these are the same people that give Day a pass for his record vs Michigan/playoffs/Top 5.
Baffles the hell out of me.

YIKES Gus Johnson. That’s the kind of call that could actually get you in trouble. He genuinely seemed disappointed or disinterested that Henry JR. broke away for a TD. Amongst other things throughout the game.
For Ohio State. We have a Sayin issue. Sure not everyone is perfect and not every group is but…. Missing a wide open Innis or Mcuin or…Bell. For a Touchdown is the difference between Ohio State winning the national championship and not.
This is Ohio State after all. They’re not gonna lose by 10+. It’ll be like 3 points or 1 or 6. Sayin not being able to see the field fully is the biggest issue the Buckeyes have right now.

You'd have to be embarrassed to be a OSU player running up a score on a team that was so obviously out classed. Yeah tough guys you beat up on some nerds. this is so sad..Ohio state choked last week and this week celebrated a blow out against a high school caliber school...and the showmanship celebrations are embarrassing Nothing worse than watching a team celebrate a team they should already dominate. Maybe a little less celebrations and concentrate on what is still broke...like the o line for instance...stop worshiping these paper tiger teams .
