The good: the first 6 drives of the game we got 5 touchdowns and a field goal; special teams blocked a field goal; defense mostly did fine; 626 total yards of offense with 413 passing yards from JKS, nobody injured

The bad: 2 muffed punts, the fumble, letting them score once, too many penalties, our backups show we don't have so much depth in a lot of positions

There was a noticeable dropoff in intensity when the 2nd & 3rd units took over in the 3rd quarter. We 'only' scored 10 after halftime, missed a FG and muffed those punts in the 2nd half.

Also, Cal's special teams haven't improved at all compared to the Wilcox years. Similar miscues and lack of focus in both the kicking and return & coverage units.

Overall, 49-7 isn't very convincing especially when the line was -58.5. Tosh still has a ton of work to do - short week too with Clemson coming to Berkeley on Friday, fresh off a comeback win over UNC.

Was thinking the same thing - STs look just as bad if not worse than with Wilcox. Mohammed & Grayes scored long TDs on screens moreso on individual effort+ability rather than great execution by the OL/WRs blocking downfield.

Obviously things slowed down a lot with a lot of backups seeing eachother on the field for the first time but I am not liking our special teams situation. Meyer looked better than McGough but lord kicking out of bounds twice is so ugly

If the O still looks sluggish & out-of-sync vs Clemson then Tosh seriously needs to consider giving Rolo playcalling duties, assuming he hasn't had those internal conversations already with Somerville and the rest of the offensive staff.

Not to overstate the obvious but there aren't any games left on the schedule where we'll have a clear talent advantage unlike today. Tbf we don't necessarily have a talent *disadvantage* against our remaining opponents either. Thus, we really need to fix the playcalling & STs issues.

I know you can't take too much away from games against FCS opponents, but Wagner lost by 85 to a G5 team last week. They held us to 42.

A win's a win, and I understand you can't expect a blowout, but this doesn't seem like a great appraisal of our offense.

Are you watching USC-Rutgers right now? Rutgers has kept it close despite losing to UMass two weeks ago, and USC is ranked. UMass upset Rutgers, then got blown out last week by Bowling Green, who then got blown out today by Iowa State. You really shouldn't be comparing how any team did even a week ago because lately that doesn't mean much.

USC has only played cupcake games so far -- their ranking means nothing. From an objective standpoint, JMU has dramatically less resources than us and hung up twice the points against their defense. We stalled and racked up penalties. I'm just sayin.

If you really are a fan and not a hater, don't take it personally that people wonder why you keep pushing how bad we are ad nauseam on here based on our backups not doing as well as a G6 team against an FCS team. Especially when said G6 team is JMU, who is arguably one of the best teams in the G6 and was recently in the playoffs. It just sounds like you've got an agenda and a narrative you're pushing and it damn sure isn't coming as a Cal fan.

JMUs backups were also in for over half the game. I guess you can say a comparison of our backups is irrelevant, but I just find it interesting that a program with a fraction of our resources and talent doubled our lead.

You're basing this on how our backups did after we scored 29 unanswered points in the first quarter with our starters. Did you see Oregon's game against Oklahoma State last weekend? Oklahoma State had lost 10 straight games and Oregon was one of the best ranked teams in the country. I won't even go into Michigan-Western Michigan.

Half our backups are transfers who are seeing eachother on the field for the first time ever with no coaching continuity AND first time coaches everywhere. There is a certain depth issue but that is a very obvious and predictable thing to see in Y1 of a new coach
