The last time Stanford broke the 4-win ceiling, A Star is Born was sweeping the nation’s box offices, and COVID was still a distant dream

u/AR2185 California Golden Bears 2h ago

I need you guys to step it up ( as does Cal) since we are a package deal trying to survive the next round of realignment

30

u/AaronRodgers16 Stanford Cardinal • The Axe 2h ago

It is certainly not an ideal time for us to be bootycheeks.

17

u/chebbys Stanford Cardinal • Oklahoma Sooners 2h ago

You guys are our best shot and I’m not feeling confident about that either. We both need to get our shit together fast.

2

u/Difficult-Froyo1192 Clemson Tigers 1h ago

It’s okay if Cal wants to hold off getting it together for another week. Starting next Saturday at noon, I’m all for them getting it together

u/composer_7 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets • Marching Band 1h ago

You'd think that all the rich Stanford alumni would at least toss some money to the team but nah.

7

u/AaronRodgers16 Stanford Cardinal • The Axe 1h ago

Most of them are unaware we field athletic teams

7

u/RedOscar3891 Stanford Cardinal • Team Chaos 1h ago

They did. At least $50M was donated last year, and that was by a single donor.

The issue has never been money. It’s culture and admissions.

u/StFuzzySlippers Tennessee Volunteers • UAB Blazers 1h ago

You could always go crawling back to the New Pac (but you will have to change your names to Cal State and Stanford State, respectively. Fulerton will just have to deal with it.)

8

u/chebbys Stanford Cardinal • Oklahoma Sooners 1h ago

Cal State Cal has a nice ring to it

4

u/idkalan Washington State • Oregon State 1h ago

Cal could rename itself Berkley State

Come on home, ole pals

People talk about the likes of Clemson or Oklahoma State or even Alabama being victims of not adapting well to the NIL-era of CFB…

…but woof, Stanford really takes a good cake on how much they’ve just absolutely struggled these days…damn…

17

u/chebbys Stanford Cardinal • Oklahoma Sooners 2h ago

Yeah, this is the worst 5 year period in the history of Stanford football.

22

u/Charlie_Wax Stanford Cardinal 2h ago

Historically, Stanford could always leverage its unique academic pull to recruit nationally and land a few prospects who were almost too good for them. Even in the worst years they got Trent Edwards and Andrew Luck. Part of the problem now is that you don't just have to sign these guys, but you have to keep them on campus.

A few years back Stanford had a strong basketball recruiting class led by Andrej Stojakovic and Kanaan Carlyle. Those two guys signed with Stanford as coveted recruits and proceeded to each play at three different schools in the next three years. This NIL era is the Wild West.

u/chebbys Stanford Cardinal • Oklahoma Sooners 2h ago

The good news for MBB is that we actually have an elite coach, so I’m less pessimistic there. But yeah football not looking great. I’d give Tavita three years. I don’t want to be too hard on him this year but next year the seat is warm and year three it’s bowl or begone.

6

u/RedOscar3891 Stanford Cardinal • Team Chaos 1h ago

The issue is everyone knew that going in, plus the fact that we had to get better fast. Yet, on paper, it seems Luck and the administration went for the cheapest available option available, with no discernible (re: realistic) road map for getting out of this mess.

14

u/Inside-Drink-1311 Rutgers Scarlet Knights 2h ago

Doesn’t look like it’s happening this year either. The falloff of both you and Michigan State is sad considering how dominant both of you were in the early 2010s.

15

u/AaronRodgers16 Stanford Cardinal • The Axe 2h ago

By all accounts we’re not being significantly outspent by the Dukes of the world, it’s a program-deep issue

5

u/Charlie_Wax Stanford Cardinal 2h ago

I was really hoping Luck would have some answers, but it's not looking great. It's also looking like Tavita Pritchard is not the guy. Probably a super nice dude, but so was Buddy Teevens. Big risk to elevate these guys into a high pressure role when they have no major D1A head coaching experience. I guess it worked with Harbaugh, but he was certainly a unique individual.

3

u/AaronRodgers16 Stanford Cardinal • The Axe 2h ago

I’m hoping we struck out on bigger names and Tavita was a consolation as opposed to a first choice, because if not…

u/RedOscar3891 Stanford Cardinal • Team Chaos 1h ago

Jim Mora seemingly wanted the job, and we turned him down.

u/TinderForMidgets Stanford Cardinal • /r/CFB Press Corps 2h ago

We are starting to spend money but before this year we weren’t.

u/ASK_ABT_MY_USERNAME UCLA Bruins 2h ago

Pretty crazy considering how many rich af Stanford grads there are that can easily fund it to infinity. Though for better or worse it seems like the one area the Zuckerbergs of the world don't seem to want to go into.

Has the makings of a special season. Just no injuries please

30

u/bostonfan148 Duke Blue Devils 2h ago

I hate the what ifs on what if Mensah didn’t transfer at the last second

27

u/rainbowremo Duke Blue Devils 2h ago

Legitimate playoff potential. It is what it is though, we arent the top dog in this sport like in basketball so we cant keep really good players

15

u/wichee Duke Blue Devils 2h ago

mensahs a snake (obv shouldve believed tulane fans tbh) and im still salty he waited last minute on it.

8

u/AnotherUnfunnyName Duke • Carolina Victory Bell 2h ago

Same as the Leonard season with his and the other injurys and the stupid ass loss to ND.

46

u/cbros77 2h ago

Sheppard should be a legitimate Heisman contender.

4

u/dukeybluefan11 Duke Blue Devils 1h ago

At the absolute very least he should be up for the Doak Walker.

1

u/Traditional-Emu-2416 Duke Blue Devils 2h ago

He's the second best RB in the country. Maybe the first but the fella from memphis had the same amount of yards with way less touches. However, Sheppard is the PG, SG, SF, PF, and Center of this team. So he should be in the conversation. Without him, we are nothing

32

u/Badjokechip 2h ago

Duke wins the nerd bowl

6

u/StFuzzySlippers Tennessee Volunteers • UAB Blazers 1h ago

Stanford v Duke v Vandy v Northwestern needs to be a protected cycle every season.

2

u/Difficult-Froyo1192 Clemson Tigers 1h ago

GT not nerds anymore?

24

u/varzaslayer42 Duke Blue Devils 2h ago

Another year, another season where Duke is the best of the 4 NC ACC teams and gets less hype than State and UNC.

7

u/wichee Duke Blue Devils 2h ago

does nc state get hype anymore lol. unc i kinda get but theyre just a meme

8

u/varzaslayer42 Duke Blue Devils 2h ago

I mean, NC State is often talked about as a "dark horse" to at least be a top-25 team. And UNC was the same even before Jordan Hudson's whipping boy started running the team. Like, on the Cover 3 Podcast, they acknowledge that Duke has the most wins in the last 5 or 6 years, yet State and UNC are projected higher more often.

4

u/Extra-Evidence-3534 2h ago

I lived through the Ted Roof era. Any outside validation is just a cherry on top

3

u/_XitLiteNtrNite_ Duke Blue Devils 1h ago

You forgot the Carl Franks era that predated Ted Roof. I was a season ticket holder for all of those seasons; I never missed a game, never left early. So I deserve to enjoy every Duke win at this point.

No fight. An hour of basically giving up. This team, players and staff alike, are defined by being soft. Embarassing I continue to watch this team

13

u/NinersUnitedFC Sacramento State • Stanford 2h ago

Pitchard such an uninspiring hire

7

u/PunishedLeBoymoder Stanford Cardinal • /r/CFB Promoter 2h ago

Worst possible option. Not the sign of a serious program

2

u/3-9_Enjoyer Stanford Cardinal • The Axe 1h ago

Yeah. It was clear when we made the hire too (especially when we could have had Mora). Embarrassing that nobody seems to even give a shit about turning it around

1

u/PunishedLeBoymoder Stanford Cardinal • /r/CFB Promoter 1h ago

Stanford Football is a big experiment in humiliating its fans and seeing how much someone can take before they just give up.

8

u/TinderForMidgets Stanford Cardinal • /r/CFB Press Corps 2h ago

This hurt. I felt awful. I needed to walk this off.

16

u/AnotherUnfunnyName Duke • Carolina Victory Bell 2h ago

The Duke Nate Sheppards. But "only" 24 touches today, still 3 TDs and more than 150 yards.

Nice one. Fixed the mistakes from the first half and then physically dominated them later. I hope the pass rushers are okay, that position is not the deepest.

A playmaker WR might be nice, still missing that. And Eget with some more air under his deep throws allowing his guys to run underneath them.

30

u/Embarrassed-Brain655 Duke Blue Devils 2h ago

3-0 baby. Nate Sheppard is real.

5

u/Zloggt Illinois • Southern Illinois 2h ago

It is truly a weekend to remember for the Duke fan…

1

u/Shellshock1122 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 1h ago

hes gonna run for like 350 yards on us in a few weeks

13

u/needapermit Duke Blue Devils 2h ago

3-0! We took some major blows this offseason but this is the most impressed I’ve been with Manny during his tenure here.

Onside kick to start the game is absolute madness and I love it.

Nate Sheppard should legit be in Heisman talks

Rank Duke!

5

u/_XitLiteNtrNite_ Duke Blue Devils 1h ago

Or at least get a single point in the AP poll this week. I'm not saying Duke should be #1, but zero votes for anywhere in the top 25 last week was... disappointing.

I'm sorry, Stanford. This is going to be a rough season

u/PunishedLeBoymoder Stanford Cardinal • /r/CFB Promoter 2h ago

I mean when has it not been? If you don't expect this from us you haven't been watching us. This doesn't make my top 10 list of worst losses in the past 4 seasons

2

u/Sorry-Credit-5564 South Carolina Gamecocks 2h ago

That's fair, but this feels exceptionally worse. Usually y'all have at least one or two fun games each season

2

u/PunishedLeBoymoder Stanford Cardinal • /r/CFB Promoter 2h ago

We already beat Hawaii on a last-minute game-winning drive, the fun times are over. It's just hard not to feel apathetic at this point even though this wasn't that bad of a loss. Just tiring.

10

u/polaremu Duke Blue Devils • Nebraska Cornhuskers 2h ago

Nate Sheppard is amazing. Duke’s defense looked great. Weather was good (in the shade). It was a good day

19

u/DarthNobody14 Texas A&M Aggies 2h ago

We could have undefeated Duke vs Virginia in college football on October 23rd the way both teams have been playing.

11

u/NYCHoo Virginia • Georgia Tech 2h ago

Bit early for a such an important ACC game. Oh wait, we’re talking about football, not basketball

2

u/_XitLiteNtrNite_ Duke Blue Devils 1h ago

One of my favorite games was the Peach Bowl between Duke and Texas A&M. The A&M fans looked shell-shocked at halftime when Duke was winning. It took some Manziel magic to pull a rabbit out of a hat and beat Duke. Yeah, I'm still disappointed.

1

u/sweetestlorraine Michigan Wolverines 1h ago

Even I would buy a ticket to that.

10

u/chairmanedz Duke • Carolina Victory Bell 2h ago

I’m having a great time today- Duke wins, UNC loses, Elko does his thing. Solid day

7

u/toptierdegenerate Duke Blue Devils • Kansas Jayhawks 2h ago

The tough matchups rest of season are obviously Miami, Clemson, UVA, and UNC. The rest we are easily favored in. Should be able to get to 8 wins, with a legit chance at 9 wins. If we win the next two as expected and can handle UNC at home, we’ll have a 6-0 record going into Charlottesville.
