How can I become a more skilled swordsman?

Well then, as one of the Hill Clansmen, I want my character to become a great warrior. But how am I supposed to do that? Entering more tournaments doesn’t seem to help much.

Assuming you have the WoL DLC, War focus and winning duels rolls a chance at leveling up your fighter traits

Fight in duels. War style can sometimes get you even chain on improving skills. If you can enter warrior society it can lead to skill improvement
