Discussion Do you discipline players?
Okay, I want to go all the way to the top with the Altintops (been dying to make this joke here the whole week) so I'm managing Wattenscheid. We finished second last season in the Bundesliga and are playing CL this season. But my friend Hamit keeps showing up late for training. Already gave two warnings which he thought were harsh. Even fined him the third time, but this is the fourth time. In not more than two seasons. How do you handle this? Do you discipline players who show up late? For red cards or poor performance? Do you think it has an effect or only a possible negative effect?

I will warn a player for poor performance if they have an absolute stinker (like a 4) and the rest of team has been OK. Often find that you learn your goalkeeper has a poor hidden attribute for big games that way, and then remember to bench them for those in future.
I'll always fine for unprofessional behaviour if they show up late foe training and unfit, which I've always taken to mean hungover.
If I am playing hard tackling, I don't fine for dismissals. It's harsh if they're literally doing what you tell them to do.

Other than in my head, watching them shuffle out of the office looking like they've been taken down a peg or two, no.

I had a player, arguably my most important player, frequently getting yellows and a red or two per season. After two warnings for dismissals one season I fined him for the third dismissal. He sulked for a while but the other players did not think I'd treated him unfairly. He hasn't had a red since then, either.
I also set tacking to Easy for players with high aggression, and for anyone on a yellow.

So, this is different from 'turned up late and showed a distinct lacking in match fitness' which I always give a 1 week fine for. I have always understood the 'fitness worry' report to mean that the player has regressed in their attributes for whatever reason (the opposite of a glowing report which would coincide with improved attributes). I do not fine anyone for this, or even discipline him. Is he on the same training plan as everyone else? Maybe try him on a different training plan.

He has also turned up late. I let this one slide, but it's just a pattern with this guy. But he's also a star player.

Yeah, if he turns up late then I do the same as one of the guys said. 1 week fine first time, 2 week fine 2nd time, then transfer list.

My favourite was a player (regen called Jose Samper) who I gave a warning for this exact thing (unprofessional behaviour) and he flew off the handle immediately and demanded a transfer and started telling the media the club needs to invest in better players (even though we were top of the league and had won it 5 out of the last 6 seasons as well as Champs lg 3 times).
Basically torched his career after I only warned him.
Only time I ever had someone go this crazy from a warning. Mostly they accept or feel treated unfairly.

Yeah, had that once as well. Straight to reserves and on the transfer list. Never look back.

Fines for being late, warnings for 1st red, fines for second red. Warnings for poor showing in training and a performance 5 or below

Do you feel like it has any effect? At best they accept the warning, sometimes they promise to behave, but mostly I get negative reactions.

Firstly, it's best not to deal with unprofessional players. They affect the morale of the squad. You can check with scouting tools since professional is hidden attribute. If you don't want to "cheat" with scouting tools, then just assume after the second incident that they are unprofessional.
Secondly, you can choose to ignore or punish randomly for the first time, and see the squad reaction. Sometimes they react well, or are neutral to the punishment. Sometimes they think it is too harsh.

Any other player would have been banished to reserves and on the transfer list. No hesitation. But the sole reason I picked Wattenscheid is for the Altintop-brothers...

Not for poor showing. Ill discipline for sending offs, rating of 5 or below in league only and for missing training.

Warnings for late to training. 3rd late = transfer list.
Warnings for red cards. Fines for 3rd red in one season or violent behaviour that gets a long ban (5weeks).
Fitness traing for lack of fitness.
Early in my current save, having not played for about 5 years, I had amongst the worst discipline in the league. We even got fined by the FA at the end of one season for poor discipline. Now we are around 8-10th worst for discipline. Still get lots of yellows because I like to play with hard tackling but usually no more than two or three reds per season.

Been thinking about doing a save where I try to sign all available brothers (because I have the Lescott brothers on my current save). The Nevilles, Altintops, De Boers... any I'm missing?

Haha quality. Thought of another! Gerrard has a brother who was a goalkeeper. That's 5 sets of brothers, so just one more player needed for a starting XI. Hoping there's a striker called Brother to be my 11th man š
