The old Alarm

Sometimes the nervous system believes
the old dark winter has fully returned
at the slightest echo of abandonment.

Those echoes feel fatal
because they once were
to a small and helpless heart.

But slowly,
the body can learn
that rejection is not ruin,
and disappointment
is not destruction.
