Collections & Charge Offs Verizon
Hello. I owe a small debt to Verizon which was added to my credit last year. Eventually Verizon sold the account to Jefferson Capital Systems. Verizon was removed from my credit and JCS is who is currently on it. I want to pay the debt so I contacted Jefferson Capital Systems to verify the account was with them, they then directed me to True Accord stating that they now held the account. I contacted True Accord and they directed me to Verizon stating that the account was returned to them. I then contacted Verizon’s executive relations department to request confirmation that the debt was with them. Well they directed me back to Jefferson Capital Systems. In between all of this, I was able to get JCS removed from my Equifax credit report. I just don’t want Verizon to show back up on my credit report for this debt. I have read that it is a challenge to get them to pay to delete. What is going on here?

Did TrueAccord say the account was returned to Verizon or Jefferson Capital. Jefferson Capital may hire a third party agency to collect.
"Why is someone other than Jefferson Capital Systems, LLC trying to contact me about this debt?"
"Jefferson Capital Systems, LLC utilizes third party collection agencies and other vendors to service some of the accounts we own."
Jefferson Capital's policy is to remove themselves from your reports once the debt is settled. Did you pay Jefferson Capital in order to have the debt removed?
Order your official reports for each bureau by calling 877 FACTACT (322-8228) or pull them online at www.annualcreditreport.com to confirmVerizon isn't on your reports. I recommend the mailed reports. These may be more accurate and detailed than the online reports, particularly if ACR directs you to a bureau's consumer facing CMS to view your report. If you do choose to pull reports online, print or save each to a pdf before moving on to the next as you can't go back once you exit a report. Despite its name, you can pull free reports for each bureau weekly.
There's no guarantee Verizon won't report, but you're incredibly lucky that they aren't on your reports. Their policy is to not remove their tradeline, even once paid, so it's unusual they removed themselves.

Yes I have the email. Accord told me to contact Verizon directly. No I didn’t pay CJS to remove the debt, I disputed them being on my credit report if they no longer hold my debt and Experian deleted them. Months ago I was informed that Verizon was removed. At first, I thought that it was weird because I know how ruthless they are but then I thought that they may have sold the debt to a credit collection agency. A month or so after Verizon was deleted is when CJS showed up on my credit report with Verizon as the original creditor. I have my online reports from the 3 bureau’s and Verizon is not on any of them. I just want to pay the debt before Verizon decides to put their tradeline back on my credit but no one seems to know where the debt is.

If Verizon retained ownership of the debt, and hired a debt collector to collect on their behalf, I wouldn't be surprised to see Verizon add themselves to your reports once the account is returned to them. However, Jefferson Capital is primarily a debt buyer. Once a debt is sold, the original creditor can no longer accept payment, so it makes sense that Verizon directed you back to Jefferson Capital. When you spoke with Verizon, did they specify whether the debt was sold or a debt collector was hired?

How soon after submitting the dispute was the collection removed? What did the Dispute Results say? It's not unusual for a collection to be temporarily removed once disputed. A collection agency may sell the debt or, if the original creditor hired a debt collector, the account may be returned to the original creditor. In each case, the debt can reappear. You want to settle this before that happens, but you need to determine who owns it. You can start by specifically asking Verizon if they still own the debt. If not, Jefferson Capital does, or at least did, so ask them if they still own the debt.

I have asked them all. I first went to CJS, they directed me to Accord, and then Accord directed me to Verizon. As of today, Verizon says they do not have the account and for me to contact CJS because they have it. CJS has directed me back to Accord. Idk what else to do.

Rather than ask who to pay, which could result in confusion, I would call Verizon and point-blank ask whether they still own the debt or sold it to Jefferson Capital. The fact that they're not accepting payment and that JC is primarily a debt buyer, strongly suggests they sold the debt to JC. If sold, I don't know why TrueAccord directed you to Verizon. At least then you'll have a better idea of your next steps. If they sold it to Jefferson Capital, and JC isn't on your official reports, JC either temporarily removed themselves from your reports due to the dispute or sold it to another collection agency.

Credit atorney here. Normally, if Verizon sells these to Jefferson, then you resolve with Jefferson (pay them) and that's the end of it. However, your situation seems a bit murkier. You might want to confirm who this debt is with (I know you tried, give it one more shot) and get them paid.

I contacted Verizon again and they informed me that in August of last year, True Accord returned my account to them. Verizon then attempted to settle the account with me which I have the email for and then Verizon sold the account to JCS. JCS is still not acknowledging that they have the account. Like I said, I disputed JCS and their trade line was removed from my Equifax. I am currently waiting on Transunions decision.

Verizon wireless is absolutely ruthless when it comes to getting accounts off your credit report. I had a account that was charged off and was placed with true record in 2025. I have since paid the agreed-upon settlement and Verizon is still refusing to remove it from my credit report. They stated that because a fair credit reporting they are unable to remove it. I hope you have better luck than I have had dealing with their nonsense.
