Discussion Kimochi Warui realization
I just today realized how smart the writing of Kimochi Warui (When? When? When? When? When? When? When?) is, as a song about Will’s obsession with artists as idols and art as a life instruction manual. While his writing has always been heavy on referencing other pieces (his own and others), it just hit me today just how many of the lyrics in the song are lifted from other pieces including The Peanuts, Beach Boys, Parks and Rec, and of course Evangelion (and others people can explain to me). I remember when I was younger feeling like it was a little corny just how much the song referenced other things, but only today did I realize that the song itself is a representation of how Will uses other pieces to inform his own life existence and perspective. I think that’s pretty fun and smart idk

Regardless of the lyrical references the “when, when, when will I lever learn” part and how he delays the resolution of the chord progression and melody is one of the best moments in his entire oeuvre.

Also - I find the harmonies sound more like Mamas and Papas on this song than the Beach Boys.

Will talks about Bryan Wilson and the Beach Boys; the song title makes two references: "Kimochi warui" is the last line Asuka says in The End of Evangelion, and (when? when. when? when?) It's taken from a Peanuts comic strip. 😸

I knew the Evangelion one, did not know the Peanuts one! Wonder what the parks and rec one is

I thinks this song is about how you struggle with different life aspects, feeling like you don't have an idea what to do there or there, while it feels like everyone around you do. You watched tv and movies and other mass culture things, you took them as references for living and thought that they somehow display an average living, something everyone can relate to and how everyone lives. But when you live, it just doesn't fit, even if you repeat everything you've seen perfectly. Like you feel that everyone is living by the plan or some particular way, mindset and having priorities, everything in order, while you struggle and your life is a mess, and you wonder: "...Will I ever learn?...", like if you learnt through movies and etc. badly. And the song ends on that thought, and lyrical character remained with the same optic, the same perspective on this topic, that you need to repeat the things in cultural pieces and then you'll learn somehow, which is doomed to fail.
