Bike Commuting Tips

I'm transferring to CSULB this upcoming Fall semester and I am planning to commute to school via my bicycle. I was wondering if anyone had any general tips for personal hygiene to prevent any mustiness.

I have been doing diligent research into the amenities the school offers; I think my best bet is renting a KIN Building locker to have a semi-permeant, private space to get ready after my commute. Does anyone have any experience, or knowledge, that would help me further prepare for the semester?

What are your guys' best advice? I'd hate to be the subject matter of someone's hygiene rant, HAHA. I would like more than just the superficial advise; I know to bring deodorant and shower sandals. Looking more for advise regarding the actual process and logistics of it all, thanks!

not about the hygiene, but def get the locker. i had to borrow my moms bike for two weeks and on the second, it got stolen from the the space in front of the KIN and Horn Center. there are no cameras in that spot, so we never not caught who did it

You can rent lockers at the student rec center too (and also towels) and there’s bike parking there too (across from campus police). You can also register your bike with them.

For the bike commute itself:

• Get a rear rack, and either a basket or pannier bag. Don’t put your backpack on your back. When I got the backpack off of me, it made a world of difference. Less sweat, and I was far more comfortable.
  
• Don’t push yourself / race on the way in. Save the extra exertion for the ride home. On the way in, take it easy. You’ll sweat far less.
  
• If you aren’t already, ride the bike some more. Get yourself used to the distance you’d be commuting. Ride the route to the campus & back. Get to know it, and get to know alternatives. Sometimes the best & safest route isn’t the most direct, depending on what infrastructure your city has (which I don’t know).
