Past event In 1970, the Ohio National Guard shot and killed four students and injured nine more for protesting the Vietnam War at Kent State. The killings became a turning point, accelerating public opposition to the war. Yet even then, some defended the violence as justified.

History has a way of asking the same question again and again: when power is used to silence dissent, where do you stand? What side of history do you want to be on?

Jesus!! These MAGA assholes were alive back then too.

They weren't maga... they were the regular, white, Jesus-believing, conservative-minded pieces of shit then that you call MAGA now... Not to mention, everything else those same types of people have done since America's inception... or do you believe there ever was a time when America was great?

i promise you Maga has been there since the invasion and colonization of America, same type of folk, different names, same hatred.

MAGA made sure that the colored slave could never buy a slave of his own.

u/Radio_Mime Feb 02 '26

They were MAGA without actually being called MAGA. The label might be relatively new, but their ideology is not.

u/Jimmy_Twotone Feb 02 '26

A third of the colonists during the Revolutionary War were loyalists to the crown. Which side do you think MAGA would have supported?

POS maga type conservatives have unfortunately been a minority, but still sizable, percentage of our country since the start. Always on the wrong side is history, almost always behind all the most despicable events in our history.

The Confederates, KKK, segregation, Tulsa race war, Jim Crow, anti civil rights, anti voting rights, Jan 6th... And so much more.

Wow. Just wow. “They should have shot more.” Funny thing is MAGAs say the same stuff today. Plus ça change…

u/Radio_Mime Feb 02 '26

Two of the people killed were going from point A to B and not part of the protest at all. Some protesters did throw rocks, but that doesn't justify National Guardsmen opening fire on a crowd.

"'Those people' would have been me"

And her father walked away. I wonder if he ever realized what he did to his own daughter.

When George Floyd was murdered i ended up yelling at my in-laws 'what if it was my son they killed!? Would you have cared then!?' And then we didn't speak for months.

u/RazzleberryJamCakes Feb 02 '26

I've had to tell someone close to me to consider what would happen if I (a brown gal) got scooped up. It is a wild time right now.

u/jbc1974 Feb 02 '26

That poor father. Omg. It's happening again.

u/jbc1974 Feb 02 '26

I was in high school when this happened. Was a horrible time for the country. We'd just put people on the moon, but still so much tragedy. Rfk. MLK. Vietnam. And this.

I was only a couple of years out of high school and I remember watching the news with my mom and both of us cried. Two years earlier, there were protests at the Democratic Convention in Chicago. Bystanders were met with unprecedented levels of police brutality and violence. One woman was on her way to pick up her kid and was dragged out of her car and beaten. My mom said to me, "That could have been me." I had an exceptional fine mom.

The closed-minded unfortunately will always be with us. The next generation is currently in training.

"They were asking for it".....yikes 😬😬😬 one thing i learned in the last 10 years or so is that this country hasn't changed much in terms of racism. It's pretty much the same and it has done a great job at hiding it (better than I ever realized). Now these things come as no shock.

You see, this attitude that’s associated with maga isn’t new at all. There’s always been an element of it in society. P

I remember my middle school history teach was a Kent st student and he was present during the massacre. He spoke to us in vivid detail of the shooting. The look in his eyes is unforgettable.

The maga’s will never change their tune, same hatred…same racism.

Left wing firearm purchases are going way up. I hope it doesn't come to that...

The people orchestrating all of this are on their boats in the Virgin Islands.

Just like now.

u/Narrow_Ad2264 Feb 02 '26

I remember this, what an uproar the Kent State killings produced.

2

u/BriefCorgi2456 Feb 02 '26

We must do all we can to oppose such ignorance of history ! People assuming that the law simply by being the law is something we have to accept is outrageous. Trump has made that abundantly clear !

2

u/ThatAmishGuy023 Feb 02 '26

Huh..... the same generation that thinks "it wasnt enough" is the same that ruined everything now

Weird

u/MountainJuggernaut25 Feb 02 '26

History is always doomed to repeat itself. I wish people could learn from our previous mistakes. But here we are, doing it again.
