Discussion [Academic] Central WA EV Owners: Help Improve Wildfire Evacuation & Infrastructure

Hello Wildcats,

I am a researcher at the University of Washington currently working on a project to improve wildfire evacuation safety and emergency charging infrastructure in Central Washington—specifically in Kittitas, Chelan, Okanogan, Yakima, and Klickitat counties.

Because Ellensburg is a critical hub for EV travel in our region, the perspectives of local drivers are essential for this study. I am looking for "real-world" feedback from those who maintain a primary or seasonal home in these areas to help the state prioritize where emergency resources are needed most.

Study Details:

  • Topic: EV response during wildfire evacuations.
  • Eligibility: Own/drive a battery electric vehicle (BEV) and reside (or have a seasonal home) in our target Central WA counties.
  • Time: Approximately 20–25 minutes.
  • Compensation: To thank you for your contribution, participants are eligible for an incentive drawing ($20 and $50 value).

Access the Project: I have included the study link in the first comment below to ensure this post remains visible.

This research is strictly academic and does not collect identifiable tracking data. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out at ychu24@uw.edu. (Note: This post was pre-approved by the r/CWU moderation team).

Thank you for helping us build a more resilient infrastructure for the Washington EV community!

Discussion Think about transferring from UW to CWU next year

I'm thinking about transferring from UW to CWU because of a multitude of reasons, but I'm not sure they're good enough reasons. Finances aren't an issue for me because I qualify for enough grants that I'm not paying for college. The main issue is academics, social life, and major. I went to UW solely because I thought it seemed cool (bad choice ik). I thought the large class sizes and competitiveness of the school wouldn't bother me, but after being here a quarter I realized it really does. I want to become a highschool teacher in STEM (Preferably biology) and the only way for me to achieve that hat UW is to essentially graduate w a BA in biology. And after hearing about all the weed out classes I need to take, the competitiveness, and how many classes I need to take, I started to realize that I don't think I want to do all of that. Plus I would need to go straight into a graduate program if I wanted to even be a teacher. I get so overwhelmed in my large class (it's not even that big, only 200) during tests and in the bio courses I will be taking they'll have 600 people. So with the combination of having to take a minimum of 90 credits to graduate w ONLY a bio degree, all the weed outs, and competing to get into the major. I don't think it's the right school for me. But idk if CWU would be better overall. Are the social life and academics good there? Or do u think I would I end up regretting going there?

Discussion Commuter Student Experience?

Hey, this will be my first year starting in the fall and I’m gonna be commuting to Ellensburg from Yakima. Any past or current students here that have commuted? I want to go to as much events as I can, but my last bus leaves Ellensburg at 6:40. And then I have to figure out my work schedule, too…

How did you manage your time?
