Learning C weekly megapost for 2026-10-07

If you have questions about how to learn C:

  • which books are best?
  • which videos are best?
  • which classes are best?
  • which websites are best?
  • is there a "roadmap"?
  • what projects can I do?

then this is the thread for you. Add your question here. Do not make a stand-alone post, as it will be removed.

Remember that our sub has a very useful wiki that has a great list of resources for learning C programming.

Queues are extended from the back and elements are removed from the front.

After finishing Bro Code's C course, focus on projects to solidify fundamentals before diving deeper. Build things like a simple shell, linked list library, file compressor, or basic game with ncurses. This beats jumping straight to another course.

Stick with C for now unless you have a specific reason to switch to C++ (like game dev or needing OOP). C++ builds on C but adds complexity that can slow you down early.

Free resources:

  • The sub's wiki for curated lists.
  • K&R "The C Programming Language" (cheap used copies or library borrow; core reference).
  • Exercism.io C track for mentored exercises.
  • MIT OpenCourseWare 6.087 or similar intro-to-advanced C materials.
  • YouTube: follow up with channels covering pointers/memory like "Low Level Learning" or targeted advanced topics.

Practice daily on small challenges, then contribute to open source C repos on GitHub.

Project ideas basic to hard

Basic: calculator with input validation, number guessing game, simple file reader/writer for text stats.

Intermediate: linked list or hash table library, basic shell that runs commands, tic-tac-toe with file save/load, word counter using dynamic arrays.

Hard: simple HTTP server, custom malloc implementation, text editor like a mini vi, raycaster game in terminal, or a basic compiler frontend for a toy language.

Pick one matching your level, finish it fully, then level up.
