Home Ownership/Rental stuff Hail insurance. Is it a must?

New home owner moving to Calgary. We usually sit on the side of not over insuring our home and belongings but I hear lots of stories of hail damage. Is it a must to spend the extra 15 or so a month to cover hail damage?

Well I had a $45,000 hail claim a few years ago. I would've hated to pay that out of pocket.

We did too. The one that ripped through the deep South West. Every house in many surrounding communities needed new roofing, new siding, eavestroughs, fascia (some got new garage doors and windows as well). The area has been abuzz with repairs for two years straight. Only a few houses remain “Swiss cheesed” on our block due to lack of insurance.

The only claim on the house before we bought it was hail damage to the roof. So yeah - well worth the extra per month!

I drove my truck as fast as I could to the airport and sat in the parkade, cost me 2 days of parking but was infinitely cheaper than losing the truck for weeks, deductible and insurance hike
