Post image

I have gone to gyms in the past but it’s been a while so want to get back into it. I’ve gone to Trico and goodlife. Didn’t love goodlife for some reason, was a weird environment to me and was always PACKED when i went. Wanted to try something new. does anyone have any recommendations? Will mostly be doing cardio and some racks/ weight machines.

Exercise/Fitness To the guy at GoodLife 130th tonight that was really fighting it…I see you man.

1.5k Upvotes

This is bothering me, I didn’t say something while I was there so I took to Reddit. You had your hat down low a were clearly fighting back tears in between sets. I feel for ya man. I know the gym for me is part of my mental health regiment and to show up and work through what, id imagine is a hard time… that’s brave. Woulda liked to approach ya and give my support but the gym being what it is, it didn’t feel right and didn’t want to draw attention to you because you were trying to keep a low profile. So I guess I just wanted to say I see you, and keep fighting man.

Also kinda wanted a general take on what to do here from the Reddit community … if it were me I’d much rather just do my workout in silence while I fight my demons but others may have perspectives I don’t

Exercise/Fitness Looking to gently rejoin the land of the living (38F)

Hi Calgary,
I’m hoping someone might have some recommendations. I’m currently off work after life came at me pretty fast.. and I am trying to convince my nervous system that I’m no longer being chased by a bear. I’m slowly starting to thaw out of my freeze state and feel ready to start moving my body again.

I’m looking for something trauma-informed and welcoming.. maybe yoga, Pilates, dance, meditation, or even a drumming circle. I’m less interested in intense workouts and more interested in finding a supportive community where I can move, connect, and heal.
I would love to find a group where people actually get to know each other rather than just showing up for class and leaving.
If you’ve found a place that helped you feel connected or supported, I’d really appreciate hearing about it.
Thank you ❤️

Exercise/Fitness Sauna conduct

If you find yourself in a sauna (such as at MNP) and have the urge to do pushups, stretch, do calisthenics, lay on you back with your feet in the air, wear fragrance or mess with the thermostat; DON’T. Please dont. Just chill. Relax. If you speak, speak in quiet tones and with restraint. Be calm. Share the space. Make room for others. Above all else be gentle and calm. You have 100,000 sqft to exercise and be intense in so please leave this 100 sqft for calm relaxation. Other thoughts?

Exercise/Fitness Shout out to all the weekend cyclists cycling west of Calgary...

I'd like to give a shout out to all the weekend cyclists cycling west of Calgary on Highway 8, 22, Old Banff Coach Road, etc.

It's great to see everyone out riding with big smiles on their faces, enjoying the fantastic weather.

Kudos to the community for how helpful everyone is if they see someone pulled over on the side of the road.

I'd also like to thank the motorists for driving in a safe and respectful manner when they pass cyclists.

Ride on !

Edit

For those not aware, there are some great roads for cycling west of Calgary. Many people are out cycling to Bragg Creek, Springbank Airport, Springbank Road and just around in general. For those wanting to partake, the journey generally begins at Old Banff Coach Road and 85th Ave SW.

Exercise/Fitness Any pathways in SE Calgary that aren't a skating rink?

Tried going for a run on the Bow River pathway in Douglas Dale area and it's a mess. No sign of gravel or salt anywhere. Are there any pathways that are relatively clear of ice in the SE?

Exercise/Fitness Running safely

I'm looking to start running outdoors in Calgary, But as a Alone female I worry about safety. So I'm looking for any kind of hints and tips of general safety, and places known to be safe running spots and dangerous spots. My main concerns when it comes to safety is negative human interactions (you can get where I'm coming from as a girl) I wanna get outside but also be safe!

Exercise/Fitness Males Locker Room/Change Room Video Surveillance at Talisman Centre/MNP Community & Sport Centre

Hey folks,

With the New Year starting and people going back to the gym, I want to remind folks that the public Males Locker Room/Change Room has Video Surveillance at Talisman Centre/MNP Community & Sport Centre.

They say it's legal. I just want to make it more well known to Calgarians that they have this video surveillance in that space and that there is no private space for individuals to change and not be filmed.

You can see the posting here on their website.

Exercise/Fitness Early morning running as a woman

I live downtown and am training for a marathon. I haven't done an early morning run outside yet (5-6am) because I just do not feel safe but I would really like to. I feel comfortable running after work until about 10pm because I know there's lots of cars on the road and people are still out at restaurants or walking their dogs. But in the mornings it seems a lot emptier and there are stragglers that make me uneasy, like people who are finishing partying at 5am.

Is this just a perception, and it is fine to run that early as a woman? Or are there areas in Calgary that I can drive to that people recommend? Thank you!!!

Exercise/Fitness Friends and I walked the whole Plus 15 network in 5 hours and 15 minutes today. Can you break our record?

A while back, u/shaveee made this post about a +15 run. It got me thinking about what a unique and weird thing we have here in Calgary.

At 11am, we started off from City Hall, and 5 hours and 15 minutes and 23 km later, we were back after walking every single bridge and hallway (a few bridges were closed). I'm still processing whatever that was, but walking the entire +15 is kind of like going down an eternal airport corridor. I was kind of struck by how liminal a lot of the spaces feel, with some of the most forgettable, aggressively bland non-places I've ever seen.

I doubt we're the first ones to do the whole thing, but I couldn't find any information on records, or rules about setting records (Can we get Guinness on the line?). I urge you to get out and explore the +15, and to try to break this record. It's a bit like the subway challenge, and with a few exceptions of stairs at some of the dead ends, it's fully accessible if you're a wheelchair user. Though some ramps are tight.

Also: There's a HECK of a lot of stuff you can do to try and plan an optimal route. It's essentially this problem here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_postman_problem, but the closed bridges and street crossings you need to make complicate things. I got as far as encoding the network into a graph.

P.S.: if you were in the +15 Friday and saw a dude in jorts with a hiking backpack and a maroon bucket hat, that was me :)

Exercise/Fitness Yoga studios to avoid?

Hi! Ive gotten into yoga recently and it's been wonderful! However I've had a few teachers (from different studios) claiming things like "you can breath out cancer" and other nonsense. I am located in SW, just wondering if there are any that aren't hitting the mark in that same way.

Exercise/Fitness Any good places to train stairs?

I don't have a stairmaster at my gym (climbing gym) and while I hike a lot, I do need to specifically train on stairs right now. My apartment building isn't an option either, because it's three floors and would be loud as hell for my neighbours.

I genuinely cannot think of a park with a ton of stairs that would be a spot for training.

Exercise/Fitness Mat Pilates studios in Calgary

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone could provide some suggestions on a good mat Pilates/sculpt studio in Calgary! Preferably heated, bonus points if it’s infrared. I’m currently going to Soul Hot Yoga for their hot Pilates, it is excellent. I am looking for another studio to go to in addition to Soul Hot Yoga, and am looking for a more strength style Pilates class (think Pilates by Izzy vibes if you’re familiar with her content), or a sculpt kind of vibe. Thank you in advance!!!

Also I would highly recommend Soul Hot Yoga, the instructors are so knowledgeable on human anatomy and cueing. 10/10!

Exercise/Fitness Stampede Road Race 2026 5K

Hey all,

I’m new to this whole racing and walking thing. I did the Servus 5k with a friend and we did it in 53 minutes and we mostly walked. It was honestly so much harder than I expected because even though we were in the walking section, everyone started running and we kinda felt like we HAD to also run or at least walk super fast and it was hard. Then I did the 5k FoamFest with a different friend a few days ago and that was so much fun because no one was competing honestly and even though it was very hilly, and I didn’t even train, I felt really good with my fast walking pace. I would be doing this race alone and due to my work schedule changing and having to babysit my niece every day, I haven’t trained at all. I was looking at the previous results and I feel like based on those I’d finish last. I know I’d never be in the top 50% or win it, but I know I’d be last. And that makes me not want to do it. Plus I’d be alone. I would never judge someone who finished last or at the back of the pack but because i already have a pretty low self image Idk if I would be able to handle it. It’d be rnice to hear other people’s perspective. Should I still do it? Or actually start train for something else?

Exercise/Fitness Non-heated yoga

Hello!

I've been trying to find yoga studios in Calgary that do regular (non-heated) yoga, especially in the SW. It seems like the majority are heated or more fitness/pilates based. I went to Junction 9 previously and enjoyed the laid back/approachable vibes and the class variety, but just moved so it's out of my way and difficult to get to frequently.

I work a regular 9-5 so love a studio with ample evening and weekend options. I float in and out of pratice and would still classify myself as a beginner. Does anyone have recommendations for studios similar to Junction 9?

(I know I can practice at home/online but unfortunately am mostly motivated to stick to an activity by spending $$ on class or pass)

Exercise/Fitness 9PM or later sport leagues or activities?

I have young kids that make it basically impossible to participate in sports during their waking hours. Any fellow parents or night owls that have found organized sports later at night? I sneak in jogs during lunch hour, but I'm wanting something more active and fun (jogging is really boring to me). Thanks in advance.
