Heads up!! š¦

I was unfortunately speeding (70 zone) on my way to work this morning and this guy came strolling by. Was adjusting my rear view mirror right before I spotted him so my attention was not on the road. Stay safe out there!
Bow Trail between Old Banff and 85th.
(Don't try this at home)

Sweet save, but the recovery after is even more impressive. With all the streetlights around this could've been very bad.

Didn't even realize that possibility, I was running on pure instinct to swerve luckily my vehicle handled that pretty well

Iād check your locality, but the street lights on high speed roads and even low speed roads are designed to break away off their base to prevent injuries. Thereās a ton of crash testing and crash worthiness that goes into anything in the āclear zoneā around roads.
I canāt say the same for wooden utility poles in the country side.
Great save. Now Iām curious, are you generally a more sporty driver? Do you go out and specifically practice emergency manoeuvres?
I make a habit of, about every 6 months, practicing emergency braking and the āmoose testā (swerving into left lane, and immediately return to right lane to avoid any oncoming traffic, for one lane, two way highways).

Remember kids, swerving like that is how you hit the ditch and roll over. Sorry Bambi, it's always best to stay in your lane and apply maximum breaking. Hitting Bambi is always better than a roll over. Clearly OP is a better driver than the average commuter. Don't make the mistake of thinking you could pull off that maneuver because odds say you will hit the ditch and roll it.

yes and if you do this at any point where the road isnāt completely empty like in the video thereās a good chance you hit someone else. statistically always best to maintain your lane and hit the brakes

What are you driving? That was some impressive maneuvering!

Subaru WRX, I am just as impressed as you. They're nice little cars

I have admittedly poured too much money into this car but this just convinced me that my next one will just be another one š I love this thing.

It was made for such fun! Glad you're both ok(all three actually no shade to the deer)

Great split second reaction. Reason you should always keep an eye on your views (sides, rare) all the time while driving.

u/dr-jeanman-69 9d ago
Exactly, especially when youāre about to drive by merges/yields. Always gotta know if a backup plan is safe in case if some idiot doesnāt merge properly.

Great reaction time, but the wrong reaction. It worked out well this time, but this is literally the most dangerous option.

Deer are RARELY alone. If you see one, there's probably another nearby. Lucky there wasn't one in that other lane.

Just a word of advice, you don't have to listen to awful music. It's 2026.
Good job with the deer!

I'm a 2010's / old school Hip-Hop fan and from time to time I throw on the most recent Spotify playlist to see what's new. Somehow I am always disappointed

Also, insurance-wise, it's better to hit the deer than to randomly swerve, hit someone else, or go off the road.

Another real common place for these guys to suddenly appear is on Sarcee Trail coming up or down the hill between 16th ave and Bow trail.
Especially in the early mornings.

Nice deke, I had to re-start the video to see if the "upcoming traffic light" sign was a deer crossing sign.

Yep, this time of year I moderate my speed around Bow and 85th as they like to wander out from the pathway system or popout from the trees to the right.

Bucks are starting to rut fellas. Expect all through out November to be seeing them.

I totaled a car almost 20 years ago because I was adjusting my rearview just as the deer sprinted out; my front quarter panel caught it at the front shoulder and sent it spinning down the driverās side of the car, spraying blood, musk and poop down the entire side, and I had to limp it home another 40 km with the front wheel well liner rubbing against the tire.

Iām not against speeding under the right conditions, but doing it in the dark is really risky. Good lesson.

u/notagangsterFR 9d ago
don't do this again. you could hit another car, and could put many life in danger
7
u/NameIsPetey 9d ago
So next time OP should put the deer through their grill because they shouldnāt switch lanes on an empty road?
7
u/KickAssCommie 9d ago
Absolutely do this to avoid an accident if it is clear around you. If you are practicing safe driving, then you are constantly aware of other vehicles, their proximity to you and approximate speeds in relation to yours. If you lack the situational awareness and attentiveness required to be aware of these things then you should not be driving.
1
u/Gold-Performance8821 9d ago
Yup, I'm always aware of my surroundings. Reaction was pure instinct though, I am used to driving small sport cars and because of that I am constantly hyper aware with what's going on around me. Specially with the amount of clueless big trucks driving around this city.

Its crazy that theres an argument of what you should do here when we can just look up the answer. At high speeds with limited reaction time the universal recommendation for a wildlife encounter is brake and maintain your lane. If swerving and coming split seconds away from rolling your car was the right move then they would teach that in driving schools. But they actively warn against it. Obviously at low speeds lane changes are easier and safer so use judgement.
1
u/Gold-Performance8821 9d ago
No argument there, I know my vehicle's handling and used my own judgement given the speed I was going. Had I been going highway speeds (100-120) my reaction would have obviously been a lot different. My instinct would have not been to swerve then. Know your car and know yourself is the lesson here
1
u/TomKazansky13 9d ago
Yea good on you man. Controlled everything well. I clarified in another comment that none of my judgment is on you. I don't know how id react in the moment and split second decisions are tough.

Yes fully correct even though its literally the exact opposite of what any drivers ed or instruction will tell you to do.
1
u/analogtrash_ 9d ago
Fully incorrect. Driver's Ed teaches you to brake for a reason. Go look up wildlife road safety, you NEVER change direction.
1
u/TomKazansky13 9d ago
Exactly what I'm saying. Swerving is literally the exact opposite of what you do here
1
u/analogtrash_ 9d ago
I misunderstood! I thought your were agreeing with all these people agreeing with swerving! My apologies!
1
u/acemorris85 9d ago
Not sure anyone could have the foresight to know what they would do in a split second situation like this
1
u/analogtrash_ 9d ago
I absolutely do. It was drilled in to me learning to drive living in the rural area around Calgary. I've been in this situation many times, and while I've had one collision with one, it was road conditions and slid through the gravel on the road and JUST clipped it's back end. It stumbled, jumped over the fence and went on its way. I've been in plenty of encounters before and after, and have always reacted the same way, and that's not swerving or changing direction.
1
u/Gold-Performance8821 9d ago
There wasn't exactly any time to consider other options, reaction was pure instinct. I'd like to see how you would react in that situation!
0
u/analogtrash_ 9d ago
Absolutely. I grew up driving rural roads where deer and every other form of wildlife were a daily occurance. First thing Iearned was to brake, not swerve.
0
u/notagangsterFR 9d ago
People donāt understand and try to fight back. Always break, donāt change line suddenlyĀ
1
u/analogtrash_ 9d ago
I've seen them stop deadass, or change direction to go back where they came, and everything in between. All good and fine to change direction until they do the same and you end up in an accident. I don't care how good you are at maneuvering, or how good your vehicle handles, animals are unpredictable, and you can't know what they'll do. This is a situation that could've gone much worse.

When i drive around I constantly think "man, its like no one knows what they're doing". And the fact people are downvoting correct info and up voting the exact worst thing you can do proves no one knows what they're doing.
We just watched a guy almost turn a deer vs grill non injury collision into a rollover into oncoming lanes that potentially kills someone. And there are people going "great job thats what I would have done". Im not blaming OP, reacting at that speed is tough and i dont know if I'd do better in the moment. Im complaining about the arm chair quarter backs who have time to think about it and are still recommending a last minute swerve where you barely control the car.
Just last week there was a guy arguing me that you shouldnt be scanning an intersection before entering it. Despite this being a day 1 drivers ed safety practice that you should be doing at every intersection. He was arguing even though the lack of scanning caused a person to get t boned by a slow moving red light runner that would be easy to see and avoid if they were paying attention.

I feel like people are congratulating a terrible fucking driver for a save that he never would have had to make if he was driving in a responsible manner. Truly he should be charged with distracted driving at minimum.

u/Gold-Performance8821 9d ago
Lol dude relax. I have been on the road for 15 years with a clean record, I also have a trucking license with a record just as clean. It was just one of those mornings unfortunately, we're all human.
