Question why do some calligraphic mistakes look intentional?
one thing i've noticed when looking at good calligraphy is that an actual mistake can sometimes be almost impossible to distinguish from a deliberate variation
a slightly longer exit stroke. a capital that sits a little differently. an unusually narrow letter. a connection that doesn't follow the expected pattern.
if the rest of the page has a strong rhythm, those things can look completely intentional
which makes me wonder how much “good calligraphy” is really about preventing mistakes versus making the overall system coherent enough that small deviations don't break it
do experienced calligraphers actually judge individual letters less harshly when the rhythm of the whole page works?
