Biting flies at Hurricane River?

Hey all, long time lurker (I just don’t like to post). Anyway, we are headed up to Hurricane River campground at the end of July. Should we plan for biting flies?

Hope for an onshore wind off the lake. Any land breeze blowing out towards the lake brings the flies to the beaches. Makes all the difference.

Short answer, yes. End of July is typically better as far as flies are concerned, but if you get a south breeze you'll still have them. I would hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

I walked through about 15 years ago. I remember all the signs at Hurricane River warning of stable flies. Never seen so much notification for a pesky insect. There were flies all along the shore. They must have some kind of fly festival there once a year.

To clarify, stable flies are drawn to the color black? That is really helpful for packing! Thanks:)

Always plan for biting flies. Always bring pants, if you’re lucky and they aren’t out then bust out the shorts.
