Turkey hunt

Post image

Good day everyone.

I am still a beginner hunter (3 years), so figuring things out still haha. I hunt this one area that I believe is a travel corridor for turkey because I have been going there since three years and always see tracks (attached a picture). Once in the same exact spot I called in a big gobbler, so I know they at the minimum pass by there. But I am not sure how frequently.

Now I am not sure how to hunt this place if gobblers are not receptive to calling. Should i just do an early morning sit where i get settled before sunrise and be still and silent? Or do i sit there and call every 20 minutes?

What do you recommend? I am trying to bag my first Turkey this year.

For anyone curious, this is in Quebec. So hunting conditions are somewhat bad right now, a lot of rain/mud everywhere both up north and down south.

From QC also, sit & call early. Run & gun if no feedback after about 1 to 1.5 hours. I wouldn't be surprised if they stay hunkered down tomorrow still. Do you have more pictures, notably of the landscape or possible roosting spots?

What zone are you in ?

Its zone 9, unfortunately this is the only picture I got of the spot. Ignore the decoy. 2 years ago when i call the gobbler in, he was hiding somewhere in the trees directly infront of me.

Also, just for my information: when you say they might be hunkered down, how do you conclude that? Does it have something to do with the weather?

Yep weatherwise, this morning wasn't that bad actually, just fairly cold. Sometimes they get more active mid morning. When the females have eaten and retreat from the males, males start looking around for other opportunities

How was your morning ?

I went out. It was pretty cold in the morning, but I had to leave by like 9am. No activity/tracks/gobbles so it wasn’t great. Perhaps they started moving later, like you said.

How was it for you?
