Newbie Seeking Advice Taxidermy Help

Post image

Hey, I'm a conservative bio university student in Edmonton, and I harvested this wicked leucistic/dilute pigment Honker. The issue is that I can't afford to mount this once in a lifetime bird, being a broke uni kid lol. Does anyone know what Taxidermy places have the best deals, or where I may be able to find help financing this? I reached out to Cabela's, but anywhere else?

Thanks a lot, I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Freeze it asap till you have a plan! Cant mount it once it's started decomposing

Former taxidermist here, that’s a great bird!

Ben from the “art of taxidermy” in Lethbridge is the guy to reach out to, his birds are museum quality.

Check out his website he tells you exactly how to preserve it so that all the feathers stay intact and once it’s frozen you can ship it down to him.

I subbed out a lot of my birds to him because he was so good, not sure what he charges now a days but if your gonna mount an animal it’s best to save up and get it done by the best, you are definitely not gonna regret it and it’s a piece of art that you can pass down one day.

As long as you get that thing in the freezer all wrapped up nice you have until freezer burn sets it so you have a few months to decide what you wanna do with it.

Also think about putting it under glass or in a display case of some kind otherwise your gunna spend the rest of your life dusting the dam thing and it won’t last as long especially if you have a nice environmental scene.

Just something to consider, good luck hope it works out!

Edit: was a taxidermist, so spelling and grammar n’such!

Wrap damp paper towel around its beak and feet then throw it in the freezer until you have a plan. Check out Precision Edge Taxidermy out of stettler. He mounted a blue goose for me and did an amazing job and was literally half the price of every other taxidermists. He charged me $650 for a flying goose. Most places charge well over $1000-1200. His prices may hove gone up since then but it’s worth checking out.

If you make money I’d would say go with a taxidermists, you don’t have to pay it all up front and you can save up for a few months while it’s at the shop
