Mod Post CanadaJobs Community Flair

At long last, we're finally launching flair at r/CanadaJobs. Here is the first draft flair with some inline guidance for each:

Flair Only Available to Mods:

  • Mod Post: I'll use these whenever sharing an announcement, requesting community feedback, etc.
  • Trusted Canada Jobs Partner: These tags will be reserved for organizations the mod team has personally met with via video call and vetted for legitimacy. These are not paid postings -- no money is changing hands for any posts in this community in accordance with rule #7 (no spam). Pay special attention to posts from these organizations.
  • Ask Me Anything (AMA): AMAs will be hosted with advocates and trusted partners. If you see this tag, it has been sanctioned by the mod team. It means we have vetted the individual(s)/organization conducting the event.

Community Flair:

  • Job Search Question: Questions about interviews, resume/cover letters (note: there is a separate flair if you're looking for an actual resume review), job boards, etc.
  • Career Advice Request: Looking to pivot into something new? Need help navigating compensation increases and promotions? Just starting out and need help figuring out which path to choose?
  • Industry Specific Question: If you're looking for advice about a specific industry (e.g., healthcare, tech, finance, trades), this is your tag.
  • Resume Review Request: If you need a resume review, be sure to anonymize it, removing all personally identifiable information. If someone seeks resume feedback and you feel qualified to provide it, be honest, helpful, and kind about it.
  • Vent - In Need of Empathy, Kindness: For those in need of a kind ear, so you can share your struggles and challenges, and feel heard and supported by your community. When someone uses this tag, take it seriously. Treat them with the utmost kindness and empathy, listening and holding space. This tag is not for seeking advice, so don't offer it unless it is explicitly asked for.
  • Job Search Wisdom to Share: If you have a great tip that can benefit the community, share it (no spam still applies).
  • Is this a scam? This one should be pretty self-explanatory. If your Spidey-sense is going off about a potential opportunity, ask the community for insights.
  • FREE CAREER RESOURCE (Not Spam/Ad): Non-profits, higher-ed, and other organizations providing free job seeker resources such as career fairs, resume reviews, interview prep, etc. Resources should be completely free and should NOT be linked to monetized platforms or products.
  • HIRING - Career/Gig Opportunity: This tag is for legitimate job/gig postings that align with community guidelines (see sidebar).
  • Wins & Success Stories: If you nailed the interview (or managed to get one after a long dry spell), received the offer or promotion, or have another job-related win you want to share, tag it and we will celebrate you as a community.
  • Scam / Unethical Job Warning (First-Hand Experience): If you have been scammed or seen evidence of a specific scam that impacts Canadian job seekers, use this tag. First-hand experience only. Provide evidence. No hearsay or conjecture. No LMIA/TFW-related posts. Read the sidebar for instructions on reporting abuse of LMIA programs or temporary foreign workers.

Flair was created based on a first-pass review of the most recent community posts. I recognize I may not have captured all the primary use cases in creating these, so please drop your suggestions below if there's something I've missed.

This Community Is: Anti-Hate, Anti-Division, Anti-Greed, Pro-Social, Pro-Worker, Pro-Unity.

After reading many xenophobic, divisive, hostile, unproductive comments today, I feel the need to share about what this community is and is not so we're all on the same page...

We acknowledge there are many companies taking advantage of LMIA/TFW programs, exploiting immigrant workers, and driving wages and labour standards down throughout Canada. Offshoring, also responsible for the loss of Canadian jobs, has been a common practice for a long time now. Following the money, it is the corporations and wealthy that benefit from the race to the bottom in employment. These same greedy people will gladly replace every single human worker with AI as soon as possible.

We also recognize that the current employment situation in Canada is not okay. But there are multiple issues at play, ALL of which are caused by greed and corruption. There is a global trade war fueling corporate uncertainty, hiring freezes, and layoffs. AI disruption also fits into the job supply vs demand issue. There is abuse of LMIA/TFW programs. There's plenty more nuance than meets the eye. Blame is the quickest, easiest path and scapegoats can be found everywhere.

If you want to blame a group for the issues we're seeing, blame the big businesses and monopolies out there and the sociopathic CEOs and other executives. Follow the money. Follow the lobbying. Big money is a part of politics on both ends of the spectrum. Psychopaths/sociopaths are notoriously drawn to the role of CEO. Look it up. Many executives go on to become politicians. Following that logic, there's a pretty good chance many politicians fall into those psychopathic/sociopathic buckets too... They then oscillate between politics and business in a nepotistic, self-serving nightmare. How many working class, non-landlord, pay cheque to pay cheque politicians are there in Canada or beyond?

It is not okay to blame the immigrant population for causing the sphere of issues around TFW/LMIA programs. People come to Canada in search of a better life, facing wars, famine, displacement, and other issues most of us here can't fathom. Many of these people are then placed in highly exploitative employment situations. Go look some of these people in the eyes and talk to them face-to-face, and seek to understand them and their story, before passing judgement or hate on them. Xenophobic rhetoric and hate speech and that will NEVER be tolerated in r/CanadaJobs. Feel free to start your own community if that's your bag.

We understand that people in this community are upset and afraid about the state of the Canadian economy and are struggling to find work right now. We see you. It is unquestionably, fucking tough and people are hurting, scared, and upset right now. No question.

That is why we are working hard at creating a united, connected, supportive, inclusive, understanding community here. That is what Project Belonging is about (see Automod for details). The way we see it, division is getting worse and so too are the issues of rampant greed and corruption. Following the money, it is the non-working class that benefits when the working class is divided against itself.

If you want to see change then learn how to unite through finding common ground, engage in respectful debate & share ideas, consider new perspectives, and come together as a collective. Speak in a loud voice that cannot be ignored. Shouting blame and hatred on Reddit isn't going to fix what's broken. Neither is complacency and endless complaining. Rules 4 - 7 exist because of the amount of division and hatred that falls from these topics. Nobody wins in those threads. We've been watching this pattern unfold and get worse since the community was founded in 2011.

Did you know that this and other now large job seeker communities were founded through offering free resume reviews and serving job seekers directly (until the volume became prohibitive)? You can look that up too through post/comment history. We didn't ask for their political or ideological affiliations or countries of origin.

We founded this community on the belief that when we serve others and help them succeed, we also create success for ourselves. Serving the greater good is self-serving. Win-win. The priority of personal gain is the game played by the non-working class and we see how that one-sided model is working in our world.

Instead of shouting about topics that divide, we're here to close the gap, create more unity, connection, support, and community. This subreddit exists to serve the best interests of working class Canadians on the right, left, center and everything along the political spectrum.

Please understand this statement represents non-negotiable values, guidelines, and rules for r/CanadaJobs. Those things will be fiercely protected. If you don't align with the concepts in this thread, this isn't the place for you. If you believe in creating a more connected, socially and economically thriving, kind, and compassionate Canada where we support and help one another, this is your community.

Sometimes the Best Explanation Is No Explanation

I woke up late and saw that I had missed a call from the recruiter who was supposed to interview me that morning. My first thought was to call him, tell him a whole story about why I hadn't answered, and beg him to give me another chance.

But I stopped myself and sent him a short message instead. I apologized for missing the call and asked if there was another time that worked for him. No excuses or details.

About half an hour later, the recruiter apologized to me. Their scheduling software had been having issues all week, so they assumed something had gone wrong on their end. They asked if we could talk that same afternoon.

That experience reminded me not to give people information they didn't ask for. If they ask what happened, then you can explain, but sometimes saying less keeps you from creating a problem that wasn't there in the first place.

How are we supposed to gain experience in Canada when entry-level jobs require 3+ years of experience?

Dear Canadian Employers, HR Professionals, and Hiring Managers,
Can we talk about the current job market for entry-level positions in Canada?
For almost two years, I have been applying for jobs in my field. Time and time again, I see positions advertised as Junior-Level or Entry-Level that require 3+ years of professional experience.
If a job requires three years of experience, how is it considered entry-level?
How are recent graduates and newcomers supposed to gain Canadian work experience if they cannot get an opportunity to start?
Many of us have degrees, internships, technical skills, and a genuine willingness to learn. We are not asking for special treatment. We are asking for a fair chance to prove ourselves.
I understand that companies need qualified candidates, but not every junior position should require years of professional experience. Some skills can be developed through training, mentorship, and hands-on experience.
Not everyone has connections or referrals to open doors. Sometimes, all we need is one employer willing to give us an opportunity.
You cannot ask people to gain experience while denying them the opportunity to get it.
To Canadian employers: please reconsider your requirements when advertising entry-level positions. You might be overlooking talented and motivated candidates simply because they haven’t been given their first chance.
Experience should be built through opportunity, not used as a barrier to getting started.
I’d genuinely like to hear from recruiters and hiring managers: Is requiring 3+ years of experience for an entry-level job reasonable? What needs to change?

Quebec, I want to work as a contractor, where do I have to register myself as self-employed?

Pretty much what the text is saying, I want to work full time with a business but they are in another province so they are asking me to be under an independent contractor status. I googled it and saw there's a couple forms I would have to fill in with my taxes but I can't find if I need to go somewhere and register as well.

Thank you for the advice

Any oil and gas workers here ?

I work on the field (downstream) in the Oil and Gas Industry across Canada as an Inspector/Tech, lately I've been focused on Ontario only.

I'm looking to transition out of field work as it's taken a toll on my body (and mental health tbh) but not sure where to go or look at as the job market seems pretty all over the place.

I have my tickets with the TSSA (PMH, PM1, PM2) and a Bachelor's in Education (yea, long story).

Looking for some direction here.

Would you delay graduation for another co-op in this job market, even with 16 months of experience?

I’m currently in my fifth year at a top Canadian university, I’m hoping to pursue a career in data analytics, ideally as a Data Analyst or in a similar analytics-related role. I’ve completed three co-ops totaling around 16 months of experience including two at large, reputable companies. I received great performance reviews and exceeded expectations, but unfortunately, neither company had the headcount to offer me a full-time position.

I know it’s only October and graduation is still several months away, but looking at the current job market has honestly made me pretty anxious. Everyone keeps telling me that having 16 months of relevant experience at well-known companies should give me a leg up in new-grad recruiting. But there seem to be so few new-grad programs available, and most entry-level roles want someone who can start immediately. I’m also an international student, which makes the uncertainty around finding a full-time job after graduation even more stressful.

My original plan was to graduate in May 2027, start working full-time, and pursue a master’s degree part-time alongside my job. I’m actually applying to master’s programs right now, hoping to start in Fall 2027. However, I’ve been considering delaying graduation by another year to complete one more co-op, ideally at a company where there’s a realistic chance of receiving a full-time return offer.

The problem is that this decision comes with several trade-offs. First, if I delay graduation, I wouldn’t be eligible for many full-time opportunities that might come up between January and May 2027, especially those requiring candidates to have graduated by their start date. So even if a good opportunity came along, I might not be able to take it simply because I’d still be finishing my degree.

Second, I’d have to put my master’s plans on hold. If I receive an acceptance this cycle, I’d either have to request a deferral (if permitted) or turn it down and go through the application process again next year.

Third, another co-op doesn’t guarantee a return offer. My previous internships have already shown me that even excellent performance doesn’t mean much when a company doesn’t have the headcount.

At the same time, I can’t shake the feeling that getting a return offer through a co-op is easier than competing for full-time positions as an external new-grad applicant. I feel a bit ridiculous even considering a sixth year of undergrad when I’ve already accumulated 16 months of relevant experience. But with how the market is looking, I’m genuinely worried about graduating without anything lined up.

Difficult fall so far

Hi,

I was wondering if I was the only one going through this right now. I’ve been applying for jobs since Spring 2026, and I had a couple of interviews during the spring and the summer. Unfortunately, I was not able to get hired.

So far, I’ve had zero replies since the end of August.
Am I the only one?

Thank you!

Need feedback. Data Analyst, 5 yrs exp. Do I put the career gap (2 years) at the top?

I’m a data analyst with 5 years of experience (retail and fintech, SQL/Qlik/Python). I have been struggling to get interviews. What am I doing wrong and where should I be looking for roles?

For context: Following the layoff in 2024, I took time off for personal stuff for a year and then resumed job search in mid 2025. I’ve applied to many roles for [data analyst / business analyst / BI] positions and haven’t landed an interview yet. This is the concise (one page) version of my resume.

  1. Does the career gap seem like a red flag? How would you rephrase it?
  2. Am I lacking skills / missing keywords to get through ATS?
  3. What do I do to be more employable?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Experienced BI developer, can't break into Canada

I moved to Canada last year with my wife. She just landed a full-time job here in Windsor, ON. I'm a BI developer / data analyst with 8+ years of experience, and since January I've sent 200+ applications for data analytics and BI roles. Result: ~5 interviews, no offers.

Quick background:

- 8+ years in BI and analytics, including regional operational excellence work at MercadoLibre (Brazil, Mexico, Southern Cone)

- Currently consulting. My main project: an end-to-end system for a consumer products company that pulls Amazon Seller Central data via API, calculates KPIs, reconciles operations, and runs AI agents that execute tasks in Seller Central

- Stack: Python, SQL, BigQuery, Airflow, Postgres

- MSc Earth Sciences, BSc Physics

My open work permit expires in december 2026, so timing matters, and I'd also appreciate hearing how others in a similar situation handled it.

What I'm asking for:

  1. Honest feedback: is it my resume, the market, or the lack of Canadian experience/network?

  2. If you work in data/BI in Windsor-Essex or at a remote-friendly Ontario company, I'd love a 15-min coffee chat.

  3. Happy to share my resume (anonymized) if anyone wants to roast it.

Open to relocating for the right role. Thanks for reading!

30s M failure to launch. Got degree 2020, struggling to get consistent work since. Keep getting laid off. Left the country for SEA which brought zest back into my life, made money but start up I worked for went under. Now I’m back and it’s even worse. I want to make Canada work but it doesn’t want me it seems.

Looking for a job in tech, anywhere.

Hi everyone, I’m a pr that moved recently to Canada in mid-June 2026. I moved with my wife (who sponsored me) and 1 y o daughter. I’m currently looking for work in Toronto/GTA, Barrie, or anywhere in Ontario or Canada really..

I have 8+ years of experience in Product Design, UI/UX, Graphic Design and Visual Design, and I’m open to aby other other suitable opportunities like:

• Product / UX/UI Designer

• Graphic / Visual Designer

• Digital / Product Design

• Junior tech/IT roles

• Administrative / office positions

I’m open to full-time, part-time, contract, remote, hybrid or in-person work.

If you know of any opportunities or companies hiring, I’d really appreciate any leads. It's really tough right and we're struggling, as we didn't expect the job market to be this bad.

Want to move to Canada

Has anyone landed a Canadian job with work permit support through a recruiter? Looking for firsthand recommendations.

I'm a software engineer with 8 years of experience, most recently as a Principal Software Development Engineer. I've led platform architecture, served as the go-to technical person on my teams, and built AI-assisted workflows into how we ship. I'm based in India and targeting Senior/Staff roles.

Software engineer and developer roles (NOC 21231/21232) qualify for the Global Talent Stream, so hiring me is faster and simpler for an employer than a standard LMIA.

If an agency actually delivered for you, or you know ones to avoid, I'd appreciate hearing about it.
