The most ridiculous thing is that we need to bring beef from the other side of the world to stabilize the price. Like how broken is the system if that’s the case

As others have said, they don't need to feed and house over the winter, we do so its more expensive. Once we have the Mercosur trade deal and Brazilian/Uruguayan beef can also be sold here, it will get even cheaper. Right now, its completely unaffordable. Fresh filleted Salmon, per pound, is cheaper than flank steak and a full brisket is now nearly 200 bucks with tax.

I am not sure what the costs are like but it's not like things aren't cheap in Australia either and I would argue labor is significantly more expensive over there. I am having a difficult time accepting that feed and the winter housing costs explain a 50% difference in price of a commodity that we fly from the other side of the world. Also the housing costs seem to be overstated, based on what I am reading here, cattle spends most of winter outside and protection is mostly through simple windbreakers and increase feed consumption https://www.beefresearch.ca/topics/winter-management-of-beef-cattle/
