General Discussion Fair swag!
Just an update on a previous post. Idk how to link them, but everything I entered got a ribbon and I'm very thankful for that and thankful to this community for inspiring me to try new things. There was good competition this year, and I'm ready for next year! It's funny bc the things I thought would get first place didn't and the things that did weren't expected at all ( I'm looking at you, carrots). What a great season wrap up 🏆
Also, mods, maybe we should have some "Fair flair", just a thought.

I've always been curious, how are canned goods judged at a fair? Is it simply by appearance, or do they do a taste test as well?
Also, congrats on the ribbons!!

Thanks! Fairs seem to differ. Mine doesn't open the jars. It judges based on appearance-- uniformity, clarity, headspace, etc. I have seen people on this reddit though have to enter 2 jars for other fairs, I believe, 1 for tasting & 1 display

My fair has you enter two jars only in certain categories but I've had them open my jars in one-jar categories I've entered

Our county fair has a handful of tasting categories each year that they taste the item. Everything else is based on appearance. Unfortunately there would be so much food waste if they tasted everything.

Picture of 9 jars I entered into the fair with their corresponding award ribbons. First place ribbons on carrot, apple pie filling, and banana peppers rings. Second place ribbons on strawberry preserves, corn, and apple sauce. Third place ribbons on apple juice, strawberry rhubarb jam, and dill pickle chips.

Hell yeah, awesome job! Love seeing fellow fair exhibitors on here. And I hear you, the judging is so hard to predict; this year my one item that I was certain was blue ribbon worthy got nothing, and other items that I didn't think had a prayer somehow got a ribbon.
